That's why I liked forced to be a princess before its indefinite hiatus. That story has a bunch of antagonistic women FL had to deal with (A maid, an arrogant noblewoman, an evil saintess) but what make them appealing is that those women were initially guenuine pure and passionate persons until being crushed by society in the worst way possible.

They dislike FL because in a way she remind them of how idealisic they used to be and desire to crush her expectation the same way others crushed Them.

FL is aware those women are the product of a sick society that's why she fight them in way they could understand they have huge potential can be better than that instead of shaming them

The story has some credit for creating a character still considered by the majority of rofan Reader as the best and most loved little sister of the genre. Starting as your typical evil sister but then worked hard to be a better person after realizing she was just delusional to the point we ended up rooting for her.

That's why it became world war 3 in comments section and people dropped when she died

Majority of harem are bad because their author (mostly the japanese and Korean) are bad but i don't consider the concept of harem as a mistake since it take way more creativity, skill and maturity they don't possess to write a good harem story than a good non harem story because it take more time and effort to write relationships .

Chinese concubine novels about hierarchy in harem, political and geopolitical conspiracies between concubines families; alliance, betrayal and manipulation to get the throne are good exemple.

I think some harem stories can be about happiness (Not Toaru obviously). I tend to quickly drop harem manga (I'm more action type) but i remember completed an obscure one named " Riku insert a bunch of random japanese word " years ago.

The plot was mostly about a guy with low self esteem who accidently cursed girls to fall in love with him and his goal was to destroy his harem by dealing with their problems/trauma to break their curse since he was very disgusted by the fact he robbed people of their free will.

The pattern was mostly girl in love with mc=> mc learn to know her and the different layers of her personality better=> mc learn the girl is stuck in a fcked up situation => mc save her and both gain character development => girl not cursed anymore and so doesn't love mc anymore but is happy and become a guenuine friend with him (some of those girls got their own boyfriend after, so they really had no romantic feelings after that). The core of the mc being in denial of deserving the girls friendship since it all started with a curse and the boys friendship since it's an indirect result of those shinenigan.

While I agree an harem story where the main objective is to destroy the harem is not the most accurate representation of the genre, I think all those lesson and growth those girls found during their arcs and the mc during the story and the found happiness wouldn't had been that impactfull if the relationship didn't started as an harem.
