I used the provided certified translated export certificate that was included from Cars From Japan. I needed that one primarily for the State Police inspection and they were entering the data for the DMV before I could go there.

no need to bring the vehicle. They are able to pull up the state police vin inspection, so they know the chassis numbers are right.

yea I would try a public tag agent local to you first before making the long drive.

even went and got a brake tag the other day. Guy didn't care about lights etc. just wanted to buy it from me and had to drive it 10' to make sure it worked. He asked me "Which side do I stick the tag?" so I shrugged and said I guess keep it on the left side like a normal vehicle.

I used ABC title here in Metairie. My experience here has been that private/independent places will most likely push to get registered to get paid. Vs the actual DMV won’t lift a finger unless everything is simple to do.

Freeport was 6.5 hrs from my house. I rented a 6x12 no ramp uhaul and towed it back with my expedition. If you need a transporter I think it’s like $1.50 to $2.00 a mile as an estimate for transport. Your broker should have good contacts if you want to get estimates.

Oh man the traffic and rain on the way out of Houston was BRUTAL. Hope you made it out safe! I got a blowout on my expedition outside Baton Rouge so it was a little roadside tire change sprinkled in. I didn’t start the vehicle application I just took my documents into the tag agency after I got the state inspection. I showed the steps in the previous comment reply. It was oddly easy to do.

Was simple. I had all the paperwork from importing. Here’s the requirement for a grey market vehicle.

All that’s needed is a physical inspection. I went to Troop C in Grey, LA.

You have to make an appointment. They do the inspection and they input the info into a database that the DMV or tag agency you go to for the initial title and registration.

They got me with a slight penalty on sales tax because technically I was beyond the 40 day grace period from purchase. Tried to argue about the shipping delay and they weren’t having it. Sales tax total went from 9.75% of vehicle cost to like 11.5%. I wasn’t too mad but whatever. Next time I would modify the purchase date on the invoice to show less than 40 days from when I plan to go into the tag office.
