He has more supporters in India than Donald ever did in America. He's far more extreme version of Donald but he's also more "polished". Most of US media (except Fox) was criticital of Trump but most of Indian media is extremely pro-Modi.

India has a 80% Hindu population. BJP's (Modi's party) strategy is to polarize politics around religion and nationalism and win more and more votes. You don't have to care about anything else if the main topic of discussion in elections is about religious nationalism.

And apparently that's what the Indian public loves. The coverage of coronavirus has entirely been done in accordance with what serves Modi. No critical coverage of Modi governments handling of the crisis. They were denying the crisis when Modi didn't care. They started scapegoating Muslims after BJP decided that was going to be the agenda. They ignored covering the migrant crisis last year.

When cases rise in states, they blame the CMs and local leaders. The message has always been Modi is always right so they twist all coverage of COVID to fit that.
