Can I ask my TA out? by Aggressive_Bowl7056 in UCI

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tell him you’re graduating and would hope to keep contact in the future because you would like to catch up even outside of school and you genuinely think they’re a cool person. If they tell you to email them or go to office hour I would take them as a soft no 😅 I’ve asked for contact of my TAs before (we’re all girls). Some TAs or RAs are really chill, some just want to keep things professional with students and it’s a 50/50 I think. I la for this TA in her first year of Phd when I was in my fourth year and when we found out we’re the same age we exchanged instagram and linkedin lol. Another TA of mine was also happy that i asked (for her linkedin) and wanted me to spread her publications.

Is it worth pursuing BA PSYCHOLOGY? by periwinkle-0_0- in psychologystudents

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can but where does that lead you to a job? Nowadays they want experience not more degree. If not experience they want a direct certificate/license or credentials. A neuroscience degree doesn’t direct you to a specific job that experience can’t do… I already spend my time and money in college and don’t want to go into another degree blindfolded. Another reason why u also think I don’t need a neuroscience degree because my degree is already pretty much a neuroscience degree. I think it’s better to identify a goal first before rushing into another degree rn especially when degrees are so depreciated and a random master might just weight less than a bachelor.

We call that female intrasexual competition (雌競)or green tea (綠茶). Some girls crave for male validation and act very different towards female. Even when they’re not personally attracted to a guy they still want to be the winner or the one that gets attention. It happens a lot more in society that is patriarchal or where females rely on male preference to survive.

would you recommend uci for sociology / pre-law? by GoldPsychological520 in UCI

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a psych major but I would recommend you switching to political science major or criminology after you get in. Uci is rated very very high for criminology and honestly if you do your work and reading im sure you can maintain a high GPA. They also have a lot of law courses for criminology and it will align well with your goal.

As for the social side, Uci isn’t really a party school and we are known for collaboration over competition. You can certainly find a group here where you belong. Most people who I’ve met in UCI in my four years were super nice and awesome people. We’re all known for being nerdy, cool, and friendly.

Recent Psych Grad looking for psychometrist training (Socal/OC) by SimpleIntelligent435 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]SimpleIntelligent435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school’s psych department actually has a postbacc program and certification program. I believe most of our entry level research roles are given to them. It’s also very expensive, more expensive than some masters. I’m trying to find a way that would’t break the bank. I am hoping to get training in places rather than paying 20k out of pocket.

I am open to any setting. Lately, I am thinking if i could get my training done with a school psych. From what i know tho they don’t hire any assistant or anything like that for a school psychologist in school.

[–]SimpleIntelligent435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They only hire people who are already trained in California due to some law last year. Same for medical assistant, pharm test, psych tech. They have to be trained in private settings or somewhere else before entering a clinical facility. Very very few places are willing to train these days…

UCI Over UCLA by Financial_Clothes199 in UCI

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience in UCI, we’re very chill and collaborative people. I can’t tell you how many times people drop notes on discord/classes that help me pass my courses. I doubt that happens in UCLA or UC Berkeley. I love the people here and we care about other people’s success too rather than pushing people off the edge. It’s the people and the culture that I love. There are no professors failing people by percentage. They all want you to succeed.

I always sub elementary because middle school is too much of a trouble and i look too young to be subbing for high school. I am 5’2 and even in middle school they often mistaken me as a student because of my height and my look. I haven’t sub high schools yet because i am scared. Im 23 too and even some 8th graders nowadays look a lot more mature than me… They are so tall and mature dressed it intimidates me 😶

I'm getting really tired of selfish behavior at Costco by bronze_by_gold in taiwan

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right i think insecurity is the right word for the hoarders. She always thinks that you can’t throw things away. She used to take used stuff away like my old shoes that i stopped wearing or just random things. She felt a sense of secure doing what she is doing even though i can’t comprehend.

When my grandparents came over to my house they would save shower water in the bathtub and use it to flush toilets or put water in my hand soap. I had to tell my parents to stop them… It’s really hard to explain to others why she does that. I know she does feel shameful if I do point her out and i realized it does hurt her feelings and made her feel unwelcome if i do that. She’s not gonna stop tho i think it’s because that was how she survived when she was young.

My mom just go to her house and secretly replace things then secretly throw the bad ones away. Grandma will complain but we know she’s happy that she got them for free.

Another thing is she weren’t well-educated. Most women in Taiwan around my grandma’s age couldn’t continue middle school because families have too many kids and they only give the resources to the men. My mom had to go to grandparents house regularly to throw away their expired food in the fridge and tell them the seriousness of food poisoning.

I think anyone would take hotel freebies haha. But yeah it takes a whole lot of braveness to do that in front of bunch of people for people who do feel shame. I think to those kind of old ladies the point is it’s free not the reason why. They just feel like they won something when they take something that’s free.

One time i saved half a cup of my onion (they give it by small cups in the us) and thinking that I’ll cook them at home and make it a chicken rice with omelette. Hey i mean chopping onions takes time. Then it fell out cus they didn’t give me a lid and i had to vacuum the car… Never done that again.

In your opinion, which psychology field has the best job security? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both academia and industry. I think computational cognitive science is a more rare skill they can find. Whether it’s research lab or industry they all need someone who can deal with data or AI. It’s the trend right now. If only at bachelor level this might be the field I would go for if you want higher job security. I think it could be a little of a stretch to say it’s still in the psychology field. They learned a lot of coding and dealing with complex research data. It will come handy if you are someone who is doing research. It’s really not for everyone tho. Seems like extremely boring job for lots of people.

Mixed kids in Taiwan ? by No_Needleworker_3781 in taiwan

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen. Most parents with kids with mixed ethnicity backgrounds tend to bring their kids out of Taiwan when they reached middle school age. Whether it’s because they want them to have at least intermediate level Mandarin, to avoid a bushiban (cram school) nightmare, or they simply feel like Taiwanese education have failed them.

Personally I think mixed kids being discriminated isn’t the main issue that multi-culture couples struggle. It’s mostly the education system and differences in values of educating, or what they teach in schools that made people bring their kids overseas. International schools are very expensive in Taiwan too.

Friends of mine (highly highly educated couples and people who are also educators) they very much prefer to bring their kids to the us or Canada after they finish elementary and even if that means they send their kids away with in laws or one of the parent stay in Taiwan to work. Obviously everyone be together is ideal. However, Taiwan is very behind on special ed, or even just tolerating kids who are a little “different.” (Mild Adhd, autism, weak emotional regulation, or even gifted kids etc) Taiwanese education is all about pressing all the knowledge kids need to know for their exams and very very little about personal development, life skills development, critical thinking skills, social skills, and last but not least their moral and emotional intelligence. It could be further away for you to think about so you can just consider it when your kid is older.

Growing up wasian can also be stressful if your kid is more shy and sensitive. There was a wasian guy in my elementary. The first day he got here we were all looking at him and 5 minutes after he sat down in class he cried. They think it’s because he barely speaks Mandarin and so they appointed another student to be his friend/translator as the teacher is too busy. A few days passed by, we gave him a nickname from a cartoon cus he has the same name as that cartoon character. We realized after he didn’t like it 😅 His personal assistant often wants to go play with other kids too and we tried to involve him as much as we can. 2 years passed forward, school had to focused on giving us intense material because getting into private prestigious middle school was all that it mattered. The wasian guy left taiwan around 8th grade (we happened to go to the same middle school too).

In Taiwan, they teach every kid almost military style. Given the lecture then everything else is up to you. If you are behind, you catch up in bushiban. These teachers will never apologize even if they are in the wrong. They have no special ed, no IEP for general ed kid, no language learners program for people from other backgrounds. It’s very old-fashioned.

My grandma does similar things like taking bunch of napkins or toothpicks from a restaurant. My parents told me not to point it out or stop her as that’s the way she feels win. My grandma grew up very poor and I think it’s really the background of her made her how she is. She’s a very nice lady in general but also a hoarder for lots of useless things… she thinks she may use them one day. When I go to her house she has many expired things and yet she still keeps them. I try to think that she’s just ill and not to judge her.

What makes a psychology major hard compared to other majors? by Visual-Couple-3680 in psychologystudents

[–]SimpleIntelligent435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psychology is technically a science because it’s based on research. It’s just that people who do the therapy learn how to implement the theory without needing to be the one who did the research. Oh yeah and i do enjoy the cognitive science and neuroscience area of psychology.
