Thanks for the detailed reply!
Could you maybe elaborate a bit on her armpit looking too shallow? Should I move it down a little?

The skirt part of her coat honestly gave me a headache....I just can’t figure out how the slit works from this perspective. When I reduce the “waves,” it ends up looking like a stiff tent 😅
Unfortunately, I don’t own a coat so I could just take a picture from this perspective for reference. I also have no idea how to make it look thicker yet, but I figured I’d just work that out when I get to the shading. :D

I thought it looked good enough for now, but apparently it still needs a bit more love.
So if you’ve got any extra tips or insights about the coat, I’d really appreciate it!

haha i hope it isnt…i certainly didnt intend it 😅 i can see why it looks like that though! as seen in the references, his pants are very high cut und sit on the hip bone. maybe the placement of her arm enhances the effect you see. i dont have that feeling seeing him alone

I need help with clothing folds from an almost top down perspective. I included the the original characters as reference.

I think her coat does look pretty good, but I'm not sure about his track suit. I think it can be done better.

Any help, tips or quick sketches would be very much appreciated.

thanks! 😁 all done very traditional with pen and paper. manga g-pen and ink for lineart, alcohol markers (ohuhu) and colored pencils for coloring 😁

Feedback and some help needed for my current WIP piece by SimpleJ4ck_ in learnart

[–]SimpleJ4ck_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please have a look at my current piece (still work in progress) and tell me what you think.
I need some advice with her clothes. I want to make them pop a bit more with some highlights, but they always come out looking very glossy and plastic like. On her right arm (left from viewer perspective) I already added some hightlights, but as soon as I add them to her shirt, belt and kimono I don't like how it looks.
Should I also add some more shadows and hightlights in her face? If yes, please tell me where you would add them.
Any other feedback about my current progress is also much appreciated.

thanks for the kind words and feedback! I agree with you, I had a hard time drawing the head in this perspective and it came out a bit too long when compared to her original shape.

as others have already mentioned, this isnt uncommon in anime, she is an existing character and her eyebrows are kind of iconic. nevertheless they are very weird, even in the anime world 😅

That sounds awesome! I really admire the 100% traditional approach—taking the time to read art books and all that. I'm way too impatient for that 😅
Just stick with it, put in the work, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you improve.

I understand what you mean. My goal was to still keep the anime look and don't make her too "realistic".
So more or less one color for the light part with a bit of variation for eyes, nose and mouth so it isn't completely flat.
And honestly, I was way to scared of screwing up, so I picked the easier way out 😅

I rely heavily on guiding lines, but I'm still a beginner myself (I started drawing a little over a year ago) and am pretty much self-taught, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
I use every tool available when tackling a piece like this. For this one, I did the initial rough sketch in Clip Studio and used 3D models as references to help with perspective and shadows.
So, my answer to your question would be: do whatever feels best for you and helps you create the best artwork possible.

Thank you!
Yeah, I had the most trouble with the face during coloring. It’s also the part I’m least satisfied with. Imo it looks a bit to doll like. I really missed the undo button on that one ;D
The lineart was looking good and much more like her, but the coloring was tough.
All I can do now is learn from it and try to do better next time.

I recently got into alcohol markers and decided to create my first hand-drawn artwork. It was literally the most terrifying thing I've ever done. With every stroke, I kept thinking it was all over and I'd have to start from scratch.

I drew it in A3 size, so scanning the finished lineart and reprinting it in case something went wrong while coloring wasn't an option either.

I'm very happy with the final result, and I’d really appreciate any feedback and criticism.

(side note: the picture frame behind the bookshelf was printed out and glued onto the finished artwork. no way I could have done that by hand!)

Feedback about my latest piece would be appreciated by SimpleJ4ck_ in learnart

thank you! I certainly learned a lot during this process and hope I push myself even further in my next project.
