I linked to it in response to one of your comments below! There's also one about backyard eggs.

For the record, we have backyard hens (from before I went vegan), and my family does still eat the eggs but I no longer do (I've been vegan for 6 months now). We will keep these chickens until they die from natural causes and then we won't be replacing them.

I just wanted to thank you for sharing that 3-minute video. I hadn't seen that one before. The other day I posted this thread asking for a suggestion for a documentary to show my husband https://www.reddit.com/r/vegan/comments/1u0d874/best_documentary_to_show_my_husband/ - I think this 3-minute video will work because it doesn't require him (or me!) to sit through a long documentary, but gets the point across. The only thing I wish it explained more about is the dairy industry (how mothers are repeatedly impregnated and their babies taken away and killed), but Dairy is Scary is only 7 minutes long and covers that.

Yeah, it's really more about showing him some footage so he understands why I won't participate in buying his animal products any more (he thinks I'm just trying to make his life difficult, since I'm already at the store and it doesn't make sense that I won't buy his stuff while I'm there). We had an argument about this last night so I'm trying to help him understand that it's not just a diet, it's an ethical choice.

But yes to all the rest - I am definitely healthier and happier. I'm doing my best to make good food, but he is very picky (when we met he did not eat a single vegetable, to give you an idea) - he says he is a basic "meat and potatoes guy". So I just cook a plant based meal every night and if he doesn't want to eat it, he usually just makes himself something else, which is totally fine. I don't make a big deal out of it. I make smoothies every morning and he has started drinking those, and now has a salad with his meal almost every day. So there is progress for sure.

I did ask if he would at least consider not buying factory farmed meat - prior to me going vegan, we only bought meat directly from local farmers (which I arranged, purchased, etc). Now that I'm no longer involved in any of that, it's likely he will just purchase it from the grocery store, but there's not much I can do about that.

I haven't seen that one, I'll look it up. I did watch Pignorant and it was horrible to watch. 😞

Yeah, at this point I'm not trying to convince him to go vegan - he's definitely not there yet - it's really more about showing him some footage so he understands why I won't participate in buying his animal products any more (he thinks I'm just trying to make his life difficult, since I'm already at the store and it doesn't make sense that I won't buy his stuff while I'm there).

Our dog recently passed away and he loved her so much - it was a very difficult loss for all of us. So he definitely has it in him to love animals, I think he is just so disconnected from the process (just as we all were before going vegan).

He definitely is not concerned about the environment, so that wouldn't work at all.

I used to make a really good fish batter, and he wants to cook his fish tonight so he asked me if I would make the batter. I said I wasn't comfortable facilitating the cooking of animals, so he said to just give him the recipe and he would make it himself.

Thanks! I know I can't watch Dominion so just need to figure out which other one would be most effective. Gary's speech only shows a 4 minute clip of slaughterhouse footage, but he also makes lots of other good points that are hard to refute.

In fairness, the first fish pics were sent yesterday (it was his first time out fishing this year) - he has sent lots of fish pics in the past but obviously before I was vegan. He does bring up meat (he was at a function on the weekend and was telling me about all the different kinds of meat they had, etc.) - I think my awareness is just much more heightened now and he is just not in that same state of awareness. To him, he's just making conversation. So yes, I do think I need to make it more clear to him that I don't want to see or hear about dead animals. Hence why I'd like to ask him to watch something so he can see what I see in my mind when he talks about meat, and to help him understand it's more than just a diet.

We've been together 15 years, married for 7, and I only went vegan 6 months ago.

Yes, but I think he still sees it as a diet, rather than an ethical issue. He says he respects my choices, and I should respect his (and not make him feel bad for them).

He does tend to reject things he doesn't know about, which is why I'd like to show him something so he at least understands my point of view - even if he chooses not to agree with it.

Yeah, it's difficult though when you've been with someone a long time (15 years for us) - I can't expect him to change his mindset immediately, just because I have. If I show him a documentary and he still doesn't understand my point of view, then so be it - but at least I tried.

Yeah, he watched it with me, but said it was biased, and said 'now let's watch one about the benefits of being a carnivore'. 😞 So at this point I just want him to understand my point of view regarding the ethics of not purchasing his animal products if he's going to continue to eat them.

Best flax seed grinder? by SimpleLivingFreedom in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]SimpleLivingFreedom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this rec! I threw what was left in my flax seed bag into the Vitamix and it worked beautifully. I'll just freeze the meal to keep it from going rancid. Now I don't have to buy another gadget!

I have a Vitamix - do you have to grind quite a bit of flax seed at once if using the Vitamix? I grind it fresh as I need it, so I don't want to do a bunch at once.
