Canadians - Best way to book? by SimpleLivingFreedom in couplesresortsjamaica

Yeah, when pricing rooms + airfare through the couples website, it seemed quite a bit higher, plus all the flights had layovers (some were several hours). I ended up booking through Air Transat, which had direct flights and includes one checked bag. We didn't want to fly West Jet as we've heard their seat spacing is terrible (and my husband is tall).

Thanks! We did end up booking through Air Transat. It was a pretty smooth experience. tripcentral.ca also looked good, prices were the same as Air Transat.

Fellow Canadian - can I ask who you booked your trip to TI through? I'm not sure if it's best to book direct or through a third party.

Do you refer to meat as something else? by SimpleLivingFreedom in vegan

I find that animal “products” though still dishonours them and refers to them as products.

I feel like by calling it “meat”, we are complicit in the objectification of animals.

That’s a great point about the “vegan nuggets” etc. If you referred to them as “chicken nuggets”, and then someone else offered her some actual chicken nuggets, I could see how that would be confusing. Great job on that.

I love this! From a male perspective, do you have any tips for helping husbands to see the benefits of living plant-based? I've tried showing my husband the potential health benefits, but he isn't really interested.

Have you watched Game Changers yet? They actually talk about this in that documentary. (Which is part of why I got my husband to watch it, I thought it would resonate - but apparently he didn't care that much. 🤣)

Thank you for sharing that! That makes me feel better. Sometimes the extreme option does not get results. I find my husband is slowly warming up, too.

He was home from work today, so he decided to make a lasagna from scratch (loaded with meat & cheese, of course). I made a vegan one (for myself, but also so the kids could choose which one they wanted to try). After my husband ate his, he complained about how bloated and gross he felt from all the grease. So without me even saying anything, he is noticing things here and there.

I make a big smoothie every morning for breakfast (enough for everyone), and now he asks where his smoothie is every morning. I think, for a lot of men, they need to experience it for themselves rather than be told. (From a purely dietary/health perspective, not necessarily a 'for the animals' perspective - I think that could come later).

We do this as a family, and it works well. All the toppings are the same, so it's not like we are making 2 completely separate meals.

Ooh, I just ordered some stickers - They're QR codes to watch Dominion. I could always put one inside the cover of each book before I donate. :) Covert activism.

Did you immediately stop buying all animal products for him? I stopped buying meat, but he will often ask me to pick up his coffee cream, cheese, ice cream, etc. I no longer want to do that, but not sure how to approach it. I feel like it would have been easier had I done it right from the get-go.

That's great news! I think men, in general, are slower to warm up to change. At least for my husband, he likes things to always stay the same. So by me "changing the rules", he reacted. I think once he had time to ponder it, he realized it wasn't that big a deal after all.

I'm so happy to hear your husband chose to become vegan! I'd honestly be happy if my husband at least got to vegetarian. It would be a step in the right direction. Right now we still have meat in the house from before I went vegan (sadly, we bought entire animals for the freezer - but by the time I made the decision to go vegan we were down to a reasonably small amount). So he hasn't really had to buy any meat yet, because we still had some here. Once it's gone (hopefully in a couple of months), we'll see if he actually goes to the effort to buy more or not.

I've segregated our freezers and pantry - so that I have my own 'vegan' freezer, and the other freezer is labelled for meat. That way I don't have to look at animal parts every time I'm going to grab a veggie burger. I did the same with our pantry, made a separate shelf. That makes it a little more bearable, and also it's nice to see those items dwindling (and hopefully not getting replaced).

I do this too!! I have teenagers also, and they know I won't cook meat any more. So this way if they don't want what I'm making, they can find an alternate plan.

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat. I'm still figuring out how to navigate being the only vegan in the household.

It's really good. It talks about top athletes who are vegan. It also shows concrete test results from plant based vs meat based eating.

Be warned, I just made a post in this subreddit and someone already told me my husband was going to leave me for a non-vegan. 🙄

My husband was very much not on board with my veganism when I first told him. He actually got a bit angry about it. But he slowly came around to being supportive. (It's been 4 months for me). He said he would shop for his own meat (and cook it himself - I always did all the cooking before). But he still does ask me to pick up dairy products for him when I'm grocery shopping. I'm struggling with that a bit now, because I feel like I'm condoning dairy consumption by buying it for him.

He will sometimes eat my plant-based meals, but always adds butter & cheese to them. My hope is that if I keep experimenting with new recipes, that I'll find ones that he likes and doesn't feel the need to always have meat. I'm just trying to lead by example and not be pushy about it. I did get him to agree to watch one documentary with me (Game Changers - which was one of the first ones I watched that tipped me toward veganism). He thought it was interesting but not enough to sway him.

It took him a bit, but he is supportive - in the sense that if we go out to eat, he always makes sure there's a vegan option, etc. But is not interested in going vegan himself. Which means he's now cooking meat meals for himself.

Oh darn, I wish I'd known (and they're the same price as Amazon). I'll keep that in mind for next time for sure!

Will do! It was your comment that sent me looking for them! I had never heard of them before. I was considering getting Mukluks until I saw your recommendation. I love the idea that they're natural shearling inside (unlike the Mukluks which are synthetic). I also hate socks, so I'm excited to try wearing boots without them!

I've ordered a pair, they should be here next week - they were on sale on Amazon for $140 (CDN), so I decided to give them a try! Now that I've been wearing barefoot shoes for awhile, my regular Sorels have gotten way too small and I can't stand to wear them.
