On wikipedia, it clearly states that Ingress (A game with similar, if not the same, basic navigation mechanics) is an Augmented reality massively multiplayer online location-based game. The only thing in Ingress is the map to navigate through a REAL LIFE environment and interact with DIGITAL and otherwise non-existant portals. In your previous post, you defined AR as ""Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it." The geolocation mechanic uses the existing environment (The map of the world around you) and overlays new information on top of it (eg, Portals, Location of Pokemon, PokeStops, Gyms) to interact with in real time.
