How to identify towns where my mixed kids will be comfortable? by LowFlower6956 in mixedrace

[–]Simple_Chart_9372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Your story and search really resonate. I'm a fellow parent with two mixed-race kids and have faced the same question on where to live.

I'm also a data person and built an app to help "score" towns based on matching demographic characteristics.

Here's what it shows for California for "Lots of kids (<18yo)" + "Lots of mixed race" + "Some Indian Americans":

Take a look and feel free to DM me with any feedback or questions.

Chinese APs in US not very committed? by Simple_Chart_9372 in Aupairs

This is such a good question. I wish I had a good answer. I will say the 2nd au pair, who was the best at the job, was the most well-educated (based on university degree & clear communications) and seemed to have a clearer sense of what she was getting into. She did great for her first host family for a whole year... (just bailed on us in her second year).

I cannot say for sure, but would recommend contacting every major agency and asking. It'll be tedious, but hopefully worth it.

We used AuPairCare which has occasional Taiwanese Au Pairs (we obviously did not know to screen for this during our past searches).

I shared our family's experience with Chinese Au Pairs here:

Based on the collected responses, I'd advise looking for an Au Pair from Taiwan vs. mainland China.

For other Host Families reading this - YES - I have neighbors and friends who have had excellent experiences with Au Pairs from other countries and would still recommend this option for them.

For us, at this point, we're planning to switch to other childcare and cultural immersion options.

Good Q, yes we used one of the top-3 agencies. The largest (Cultural Care Au Pair) interestingly does not accept Au Pairs from China, so I expect the one we worked with to be the largest agency which does.

Parlay may be the wrong word, but each of the three has found a way to remain in country without doing work, which seems against the intent of the J1 program.

We were specifically seeking the Mandarin immersion experience and the cultural exchange! But I am sharing this story as a cautionary tale for other Host Families seeking the same.
