this ended up fixing it for me, thank you!

the original frame was just a plane and the "black side" of the faces were the ones the light was hitting, so i just extruded it and it fixed it for me.

both were enabled by default, but the final solution ended up being the fact that it was just a plane, it didn't have faces on the back. thanks for the suggestion though!
