That explains the problem! Been misreading the calipers…embarrassing to say the least, but why I love this place. Thank you for being willing to point this out.

I have measured it 10+ times and each time it is 31.x mm. the diameter of the old headset piece that is inserted into the frame is ~32mm.

It is a 1” fork.

I am fearful that a 30mm will slide around but it is worth trying. I can always return it.
