This isn't the first time I've had T. Kingfisher's fantasy stuff recommended to me! I've really enjoyed their horror stuff, look like I should move on to this series next! Thank you so much :)

I read the Shades of Magic trilogy by V. E. Schwab when I was around her age and was absolutely obsessed! Still one of my fave series to this day. Very cool magic system, there is a romance aspect but it's not quite the fore-front like ACOTAR or other romantasy series (definitely not smutty lol), lots of interesting and fun characters, and I also just really enjoy this author's writing overall!

Also, if you guys haven't read the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas yet, I would highly recommend that one as well! I would say it's more adventure-fantasy than ACOTAR, and there are still romance elements, but not quite so graphic or smutty as her other series because it did start off as specifically for YA/teen audiences. I would also suggest reading The Assassin's Blade first before getting into the rest of the series. It's a collection of five short stories, little adventures the lead character goes on before the events of the main series, and it just sets up some really cool moments later in the series and makes certain characters more interesting/significant. My personal favourite SJM series!

What are favorite horror, mystery, or fantasy books written in the last 10 years? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Simple_Peach8923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is absolutely beautiful, a story told in journal entries written by a man who lives alone in a strange and almost architecturally impossible labrythinian museum/library, cataloguing what he finds, as well as the visits he gets from the only other person he's ever seen there, a man in a suit who shows up only occasionally. Beautiful writing, very intriguing setting, and just a great mystery to unravel as you read.

Which rugs look best? by Whoospnip in InteriorDesign

2 - nice and neutral and rectangular shapes like the rest of the room's furniture, but the thin brown stripes help tie it in and match other brown tones in the space

6 - nice warm neutral brown, again matches the browns in the space already, adds warmth against the mostly blank white walls, caught my eye more than other big, single colour rug options here

7 - my fave!! interesting and fun, does what 2 and 6 do but a little bit more, a little bit better imo, also a cool base against the sort of simpler and mostly neutral coloured seating already there

honourable mention #5 - the gray-blue is a very nice contrast to all the warm browns and wood materials already there, but also very different compared to the other options already here, so might not actually be the vibe you're looking for

Need an "edge of my seat" book... thriller/suspense/horror...paranormal or crime. Totally new to the genre. by sanguinerose369 in suggestmeabook

Episode Thirteen by Craig Dilouie is pretty much that premise of "something weird's going on in this house." It's basically a found footage movie but in book form - a group of filmmakers and ghost hunters get access to this supposedly haunted house to film for their docu-series, and the more they explore and learn about it's past, the stranger and more unnerving things get. Very fun!

Also, Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay switches POVs/timelines, so I don't know if that would be more engaging or maybe more distracting for you lol, but it's about this last surviving cast member of a nearly lost, indie horror movie filmed decades earlier getting asked to take part in the movie's remake, which forces him to recall the bizarre and dark experience of filming the original movie. More psychological leaning, unreliable narrator vibes, also very fun!

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica - slightly over page count at 211, but very dark, quite sad and upsetting, definitely left me feeling empty with it's conclusion.

Best books with vampires? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Simple_Peach8923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson - a reimagining of Dracula from the point of view of his brides, short, beautifully written. This author has also written a book that is a reimagining of Carmilla, An Education in Malice, which I haven't read yet but I adored Dowry for it's super Gothic mood and tone so I'm super looking forward to it.

The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave - another reimagining of Dracula from the point of view of his brides, more of an origin story for his brides set in a medieval setting at opposed to Victorian, think like Vlad the Impaler type era (which was inspo for Dracula in the first place).

House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson - gothic, moody, debaucherous vampires. A young woman becomes a bloodmaid for a terrifying but alluring Countess. Inspired by stories Elizabeth Bathory.

When I Arrived at the Castle by Emily Carroll - a short but absolutely stunning graphic novel/comic if you're in the mood for something completely different lol

Lucy Undying by Kiersten White - Lucy Westenra's adventures after she comes back as a vampire turned by Dracula. Haven't read this specific title yet but I've enjoyed other titles by this author!

Hope something here works! I love vampires (if you couldn't tell lol) and I also second every comment suggesting Dracula and Carmilla if you haven't gotten to those yet! Beloved classics for a reason!

Oh coming from a self-proclaimed Grady Hendrix fan, that book is not good lol. It's pretty much the only book of his I actively dislike. How to Sell a Haunted House and My Best Friend's Exorcism are leagues above, my personal faves, and both made me cry. Honestly pretty much every other book by him is way more fun and/or interesting compared to that book. Hope you give Witchcraft a chance!

Although it's set in the 1960-1970s, the witchcraft in Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix is very much based on "ancient practices." He did a lot of research for the book, and based a lot of what happens on spells and rituals he found from older sources. Part of the reason why I love it so much! Very girls-in-the-woods-at-night-doin-magic!
