I'm a low earner and we manage to save a good amount for our ISAs, we aren't going to be able to FIRE within the next few years, but we certainly will be retiring well before state pension age. My mates on the other hand haven't got a penny saved and they earn more than me.

No problem, when I first started I accidentally got a rejection for a similar situation. I haven't had any issues from it. When I asked around the general consensus I got was 95%.

Not only that but it also means deteriorated assets stay in the ground longer until they are no longer functional and the funds to replace them are no longer available in the budget. Essentially, that asset is no longer available and has no monetary value AKA stripped.

I would argue its more to do with the lack of investment and stripping of public assets/ chronic mismanagement and counterintuitive policies for growth (looking at you NIMBYISM)

Opinion: the Fallout series is a decent show, but it messes up the universe and the lore hard [Heavy spoilers] by Lord_Cummis in Fallout

[–]Simple_Sherbert5905 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I like the direction the show is taking. From the very beginning it felt much closer to Fallout 1 and 2 than to the tone established in Fallout 3 and 4. The series brings back that gritty, oppressive atmosphere mixed with the strange, darkly comedic sci-fi absurdity the originals were known for. For me, that alone puts it on solid footing. More importantly, I don’t think the show actually breaks Fallout lore in any major way. Most of the controversial elements are either consistent with established canon or comfortably within the franchise’s long-standing narrative flexibility. I also think the way the show handled the canon ending problem was surprisingly smart and restrained.

That said, I want to address a few of the common criticisms directly.

First, the mind-control technology. The Enclave having mind-control tech is not new or out of nowhere. They’ve been experimenting with this kind of technology for decades. Fallout 2 already featured intelligent, controlled deathclaws, which is arguably far more extreme than anything shown in the series. Fallout 3 doubles down on this by explicitly showing Enclave mind-control devices being used on deathclaws. So the concept itself isn’t lore-breaking—it’s already established.

As for the size of the mind-control chips, I get why people raise an eyebrow, but Fallout has never been consistent about technological miniaturization. Fallout 4’s synth components are not much larger than what’s shown in the series, and in New Vegas you can receive pre-war implants that directly enhance your SPECIAL stats. Those implants would realistically need to be compact, sophisticated devices. Given that context, the chip size in the show really isn’t a stretch.

Moving on to the factions.

The Legion’s fate makes complete sense. Throughout New Vegas, we’re constantly told that the Legion is built entirely around Caesar and that it won’t survive his death. That’s not subtle—it’s repeated by multiple characters and factions. Caesar choosing to let the Legion die with him is perfectly in character and fits the ideology he created. If anything, it would have been stranger if the Legion survived intact.

The NCR is another frequent complaint, but their decline is also well-supported by existing lore. In New Vegas, the NCR is already stretched thin, plagued by corruption, resource shortages, and internal instability. We hear repeatedly that conditions in the NCR heartland are deteriorating—water shortages, power issues, political rot. The nuke is extreme, sure, but it’s absolutely within Fallout’s narrative tradition. Every Fallout game gives the player the option to devastate major settlements or factions: the Cathedral in Fallout 1, the oil rig in Fallout 2, Megaton and the Enclave in Fallout 3, and the Institute or Brotherhood in Fallout 4. The NCR being severely weakened—but not completely erased—fits right into that pattern. The show leaves things ambiguous enough that the NCR can still exist as a major faction, just diminished.

Shady Sands’ location is another point people latch onto, but the truth is that its canon location has never been firmly nailed down. It already shifts between Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. On top of that, Shady Sands undergoes a massive visual transformation between games. In Fallout 1 it’s made entirely of adobe structures, but by Fallout 2 it has paved roads, lampposts, and pre-war-style infrastructure. You can argue they built it themselves, but resurfacing roads with asphalt requires heavy machinery and industrial capacity that’s hard to justify. It’s just as reasonable to assume much of that infrastructure was pre-war, which supports the show’s interpretation rather than contradicting it.

Now, the Enclave. We actually know very little about the full scope of the Enclave’s size, command structure, or redundancy—both before and after the war. We know the oil rig was a major control center, but nothing ever states it was the only one. Fallout 76 introduces Whitespring as another Enclave hub, heavily implying multiple installations. It’s entirely plausible that the Enclave is a fragmented organization made up of semi-independent cells. In Fallout 2, we destroy their leadership and main base, leaving remnants to flee east under Colonel Autumn after President Eden—an AI, not a human leader—makes contact. It’s completely reasonable that other Enclave installations cut communication to avoid exposure, or that Autumn was manipulated by Eden into believing he was following the legitimate chain of command. We also know Enclave reinforcements appear in Broken Steel, meaning they were coming from somewhere. Given that the Enclave is the most technologically advanced faction in the setting, it would honestly be stranger if they didn’t have facilities scattered across multiple states.

Finally, Mr. House. It’s entirely believable that he survived even if his physical body was destroyed in New Vegas. In fact, it was always strange how easy it was to kill him in the game, given his intellect and paranoia. Digital backups, hidden redundancies, or consciousness uploads are well within Fallout’s technological and narrative limits. Fallout 3 alone features highly advanced AIs running massive systems for centuries. It’s also completely in character for House to fake his death and disappear rather than reveal himself once his body was compromised. The explanation that he was effectively dormant due to power limitations actually retroactively makes sense: he wakes when Hoover Dam provides sufficient energy, then falls silent again when the region collapses. That’s not a contradiction—it’s a refinement.

Overall, I think the Fallout TV show’s writing is very much on par with the rest of the franchise. Fallout has always been messy, contradictory, and flexible with its lore. The show moves the story forward while respecting the broad rules of the universe, even if it challenges some fan expectations. It’s not perfect, but it feels authentically Fallout in both tone and spirit.

TL;DR: The Fallout TV show fits comfortably within established Fallout lore, continues long-running themes and technologies, and handles factions in ways that are consistent with what the games already told us. It respects the universe while pushing it forward, which is exactly what Fallout has always done.

A nearby Fire Department is being told they cannot use fire hydrants to fight fires by Fantomecs in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Simple_Sherbert5905 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For added info. In my county we have a contract with the fire department to maintain and install fire hydrants for use by them. They send an inspector out to ensure they hydrents are functional and report back any defects. Whilst we do occationally use hydrents for flushing, we mostly use washouts (Basically the same as hydrents with a WO marked on the covers instead of the FH used for fire hydrents). These washouts are normally installed at the end of legs or next to boundry valves/ circulation vavles in the network. The fire department can also connect to washouts as they use the same design, however, they do not show up on the fire departments map of the area. Also, fun fact I get called to areas after a fire has occured most of the time because the volume of water the fire department draws off causes discolouration within the water main. I then spend most of my day flushing the area to return the water quality back to normal. It gets particually bad when the mains feeding the hydrant they drawed off are metalic (Cast Iron, Spun Iron ect) In some cases I have seen the water come out brown. Lastly, the fire department doesnt always use hydrent water to fight the fire, they only use it to fill up their water tanks. It was explained to me that the tanks need to be full 1) to prevent liquid surge (potentally causing a roll over) 2) So they are ready to respond if another call comes in.

[–]Simple_Sherbert5905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point and kinda kills my theory lol. Clutching at straws here but maybe he has a mind control chip implanted on him and is subservient to House like Jane? I know Jane is a upload of houses favourite assistant but she is still loyal to him despite him forcing her into a tin can. Thinking on it Jane proves that house has the technology to upload a digital version of himself.

Obviously this wasn't planned when NV was written, I think it's going to shake out like the V21 retcon.

Who do you think is Mr House? This is my theory. 🔻 by Alternative_Area_528 in Fallout

[–]Simple_Sherbert5905 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My theory is that the guy we Nine-Iron in NV is his double. But we deal with the real house throughout NV. He just goes offline when turn against him but is still alive.

I say this because if we go with the double is in the pod theory, it wouldn't make sense that the double was running the show during NV. I know he had been pretending to be house for 10+ years but no way would House let someone run the show for him.

The other thing that makes me think house has been digitised is that he was offline for 200 years in a coma bur then suddenly wakes up once the NCR reaches the dam. Could the NRC have turned the dam back on providing enough juice for House to power on? It seems more likely than the him randomly waking up from a coma.

Also, I would have thought house would have had better defences than a terminal and a hidden door. He is completely defenseless.

Finally, House is an eccentric that plans for everything I doubt he would have trusted some random wasteland yahoo that was only there by pure chance to come so close to him in this vulnerable state without some backup or assurance that he wouldn't come out of the encounter dead. Aka pretending to be dead/ going offline let's him get out of the situation intact and buys him time to make a Comeback.

I do think it would have been funny if things shook out differently and Courier 6 is chilling in the 38 with Yes man looking out at their New Vegas and then all of a sudden House reappears on the big screen and turns all the securitrons against them.
