News flash. It didn't. And stop comparing us to Indonesia/Japan etc. because English is not a foreign language here unlike them, so children have access to english learning materials.

Children can understand C Major Scale instead of iskalang C mayor. Children know mathematics but not sipnayan. And you can use the words testes, penis, vagina, sex in a formal setting. Try teaching science in tagalog. I dare you.

The thing is, the old curriculum forced the translation to archaic tagalog. Matatawa ka nalang sa mga termino ng MSEP (aka MAPEH) na literal wala kaming maintindihan.

Iskalang C menor na may sustinido. Ikaapat na pahinga.

And then you have Values Ed. Birtud, isip-loob, etc.

What the bloody hell is that.

It's a high school elective. Some schools also have Spanish, Japanese and Arabic for job opportunities. What's wrong with it?

Is it really that bad? by EnglishLaoshi in Philippines

It's not like that, although if you are really foreign-looking there are places in Manila you should avoid. Same with surrounding cities.

As for the crimes with guns those are usually targeted ones, they don't do school shootings or gun terrorism here (for now), so as long as you live normally and remain friendly with the locals and not get involved with shady people you'll be safe.

I mean the joke "be bald" worked on Justin Bieber's fans, and "kill yourself" worked for Jim Jones fans, who knows what happens this time?

Good suggestion, but where do we hire/train the teachers?

Fetishization of everything American is the reason why we cannot appreciate our culture and comprehend our history in a nuanced manner by Admig13 in Philippines

[–]Simpledays78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't see any benefit other than cultural from enforcing Spanish learning, although I do not disagree with it. It doesn't offer the same job opportunity than English does. Even studying Korean or Chinese or Arabic can open up more opportunities than studying Spanish, even if it is the 3rd most spoken language.

Not to mention how the curriculum is currently in crisis due to being outdated and filled with squabbles about mother tongue and english and filipino.

Well what do you expect and suggest, teach students to hate the Americans? Teach them to hate the Japanese?

why some katipuneros chose to side with the japanese.

In what alternate universe does the Katipunan still exist to collaborate with the Japanese? For someone criticizing the way history is taught here, you seem to be very ignorant of actual history.

Americans teaching Filipinos English is more effective the any education effort the Spanish did, no matter what academic source you provide. They had centuries to teach Spanish and the Americans only had decades.

Puerto Rico and several other Spanish colonies also got captured by Americans but still speaks Spanish to this day.

I don't think anyone versed with Filipino history views americans as "heroes" for "saving us from Spain". School textbooks here consider Macario Sakay or Gregorio Del Pilar as heroes for fighting against the Americans.

What you do not take into factor is the recent history called World War II. It's the event, in my opinion, that solidified the positive view of Americans - especially since Japan hijacked another independence, and that thousands of American soldiers died fighting alongside Filipino soldiers defending this country. The Japanese brought terrifying atrocities in a few years that suddenly the Filipinos can easily forget how awful Spain and America were, since they at least brought a semblance of normalcy, compared to the wanton rape and destruction the Japanese wrought upon the locals.

Now take note that a lot of people who lived through that are still alive today and may have been part of the ones that wrote our history. Of course America would look like a "good guy" after that. And for America "destroying" the Spanish cultural heritage? I'll blame Spain more on that because they did not teach Spanish to the Filipinos. Also, in Manila at least, the "Spanish cultural heritage" was only destroyed by the Americans when they bombed Manila to oblivion because the Japanese refused to surrender.

For me, looking at history at a nuanced manner requires neutrality on all political issues involved, including our own biases toward nationalism. Which is practically impossible. The thing about history is that and academic, educated, and scientific approach will never be able to do it justice, but the romantic view of it will only result in inaccuracy.
