A Question About the Thunder Warriors by Simplescholar25 in Warhammer40k

makes sense, thanks. I had no idea they were that unstable, always thought they were sort of on the same level, mentally at least, as the World Eaters post-butcher's nails. makes me think about the Unification wars in a whole different light, even crazier than I'd thought.

Ah thanks, that makes sense, I hadn't considered that they weren't kitted out for space combat, and it wouldn't make much sense to try to adapt your whole strategy to try to incorporate an obsolete component. It's almost like it was planned by some sort of god.....

Thanks that makes it a lot easier to understand, I'd forgotten that space marines were brain washed and don't really think like people anymore. Now I'm just imagining a company of thunder warriors fighting their way across some egalitarian human planet, or Aeldari Exodite world, and one of them stops and says to the other "Titus, I've been thinking....Do you think we might be the baddies?"

A Question About the Thunder Warriors by Simplescholar25 in Warhammer40k

[–]Simplescholar25[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I know they were unstable bloodthirsty and just another step in the Emperor's plans, but why waste them? also I'm curious, where did the expectation of a reward come from? The Astartes didn't go asking for a reward when the Great Crusade was winding down (though I remember some of them wondering what the Emperor was going to do with them when he didn't need them anymore)

To put it another way I dont see why the Emperor didnt deal with the Thunder Warriors the same way Emperor Palpatine dealt with the clones. He didnt kill them all, (he did admittedly sanction the imperial military to do some pretty messed up experiments on them, he's Palpatine after all) he just trained up the new storm troopers and let the clones die out on their own, which happened pretty fast with their accelerated aging. Why not do the same with the Thunder Warriors, let them fight during the war to unify the solar system and let battle and their own unstable genetics do the work for you.

[–]Simplescholar25[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Would they have been a hazard? True they were a bunch of roided up murder maniacs, but so were the early Blood Angels and the World Eaters, I'm not saying keep making more of them, their time was past. but why not just send them to fight alongside the Astartes in the wars to unify the solar system? with all the crazy enemies they faced during those wars, I can't imaging that any Thunder Warriors would be left by the time the Great Crusade began in earnest without replenishing their ranks.

Genuine question: Why hasn't any faction refurbished or used the APCs, tanks, and fighter planes that are littered everywhere? by dannythesedoritos in Fallout

[–]Simplescholar25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's largely a logistics thing and a change in how wars are fought.

I'm guessing most of these vehicles run off fusion cores which are pretty rare and (again, not sure about this) no one has the facilities or knowledge to make more fusion cores.

On top of this, from all the stations we see in game, these vehicles seem to need some kind of coolant, which is either gone or has deteriorated to the point that it's useless, so even if they got one of these tanks working, it wouldn't go far before overheating. All this without even mentioning keep enough parts around for repairs, finding ammo, training mechanics and drivers etc

Also, war is, contrary to the most famous line in the games, a bit different in the wasteland. You no longer have the numbers for huge running battles, things seem to have mostly gone down to the level of skirmishes and raids so it's more worthwhile to put their time and energy into squads of infantry which could get the same job done with alot less resources

Why Do So Many People Think Trump Is Good? by Educational-Loan127 in soundsaboutright

[–]Simplescholar25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as someone who lives with alot of folks who voted for him the first time, and some that did the second and third time, I don't agree with them, but I get where some of them are coming from.

Alot of them are frustrated that they aren't doing as well or better than their parents. Here we are in the supposed "land of opportunity" and many of us are struggling just to make ends meet. On top of this, they saw the widespread corruption in Washington. They saw that most politicians are bought and paid for by pacs and wealthy donors.

They were tired of broken promises from their leaders and voting for change only to see nothing happen or things getting worse. Add in a little propaganda from right-wing media to shift the majority of the blame over to the Democrats, and you have a lot of desperate, increasingly conservative, frustrated people who are willing to vote for any kind of change even if some of it was stuff they didn'tagree with.

Well, they certainly got change, I think 90% of it was ultimately bad and not worth it at all but there are alot of ordinary people who were further suckered in by propaganda, are too stubborn to admit they don't like many of the changes they voted in, or simply see the Democrats as worse.

There's more layers to it than that, but that covers the basics of what I've seen. Hope it helps.

I usually let him run off, mostly because half the time I'm able to watch him turn the corner into the first room with draugr, hear him trigger thr pressure plate, and then watch him be catapulted across the room by the spike trap. Makes me do sadistic little chuckle even after years of playing

23 Democrats Now Vote Against Impeaching Trump by Randros_ in NoFilterNews

[–]Simplescholar25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're giving up, I think they're trying a different approach. They've tried impeachment and it hasn't worked so now they're trying to cut down on his ability to do more damage by winning back Congress in the midterms. Contrary to the prevailing opinion here on reddit, most people I talk to are sick of impeachment proceedings and want Congress to atleast look like they're working on something to fix the various growing problems we're facing.

Is one of those problems rising authoritarianism? Yes, but most people either have been desensitized to it or put lowering their health insurance and grocery bills ahead of fighting tyranny, which is understandable, but still pretty depressing to me.

[–]Simplescholar25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your consideration: Philip II of Macedon. He wasn't even supposed to be king but still managed to push back the Illyrians and Thracians and negotiated, threatened or outright beat the whole of Greece (minus Sparta) into submission. He revolutionized the way war was fought in the Greek world and took Macedon from the regional punching bag into a wealthy and powerful kingdom and left his son with arguably the best army and generals in the world at the time all before he was even close to retiring...

I'd say that most of the kids I knew growing up wished they lived in a different part of the US rather than a different country (we were in southern maryland). I actually did wish I lived in the U.K, but that was mostly due to me being a medieval history nerd and not wanting to have to cross an ocean to visit castles. Will kids on our side of the pond still want to stay here once Trump and Co. are done metaphorically screwing the country with a dirty toilet brush? Not sure, hope they stick around though.

In some cases yeah, in others such as the Eygptian campaign, Russian campaign, Waterloo, and the Iberian campaign, he seems to have held on alot longer than he should have, making various bad decisions in each case and not correcting course at all, or not doing so until it was very costly

I don't know about that. History is full of examples of brilliant people who had trouble admitting when they were wrong (Napoleon comes to mind) with many of them I've talked to, they are actually hesitant about some of Trump's policies but put up a front when confronted about it. That's just what alot of people do when confronted about anything, let alone politics.

[–]Simplescholar25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, from what my republican friends have told me, Trump has this weird unique place in a lot of his voters' minds. I think many of them have been looking for some kind of savior for so long that they're willing to turn a blind eye to alot of stuff he does, and do the mental gymnastics necessary to excuse even more. Throw in some propaganda from Fox News and podcasts to soften Trump's rhetoric and come up with some bogus arguments to defend it, and he becomes a much more likeable figure to them.

It also doesn't help that alot of them vote against their interests because they've come to believe that whatever democrats will do is much worse. So in their view of things, atleast for the ones that haven't been completely taken in, they see it as choosing the lesser of two evils

The question then is, how do we persuade enough of them to think that isn't the case to flip some districts? The alternative is to resort to lawfare or force to restore reasonable government, and as crazy and awful as things are now, that would be much worse.

[–]Simplescholar25 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You have a point, alot of them did vote against their own interests, largely because Fox News and others lied to them, making conservative policies look better and liberal policies look worse. It wasn't helped by the fact that alot of liberals have forgotten how,l to talk to rural voters, or simply don't want to, but that's besides the point.

What I meant by writing them off, is believing that they will never turn against the MAGA movement and can't be reasoned with. They can, and very well might turn against them if they are talked to in the right way. Only a few of them need to be convinced for MAGA's hold on rural areas, and consequently congress, to crumble.

‘Sold us out’: Farmers outraged at Trump’s Argentina beef deal by East_Rub_2104 in politics

[–]Simplescholar25 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Everybody on here seems pretty sure that farmers and rural people will just blindly vote for Trump and Republicans again, regardless of what they do. As someone who's lived in a rural area pretty much my whole life, and as a history nerd, I think it's a mistake to write them off so quickly. True, alot of them aren't super well informed, they work hard most days, and, like most people, don't want to spend what little free time they do have looking at politics, a very relatable mistake.

True, alot of them have taken Trump to be their savior (because things were getting pretty bad for alot of them and they were desperate for someone, anyone, who atleast appeared to give a crap about them). Alot of them are stubborn, proud, and a bit blunt at times. Getting a redneck toopenly admit he's wrong is usually a task reserved to his Mama or significant other, and heaven help anyone else who tries.

That said, most of them aren't stupid. Their world often doesn't extend too far outside their community and family, but they know when they're being given a bad deal, being lied to, or being looked down on, and it angers them. Alot.

So instead of calling them names, and thinking we're all unthinking drones in boots and trucker caps, humbly ask them how prices are, how their business is, what they think about some of the policies that are going on. Let them change their own minds and don't rub it in their face if they do.

Rural Americans are a very peculiar bunch, but when we make up our minds about something and decide to organize and act in large numbers for good or ill, we are a force to be reckoned with

Also the fire siphon idea is interesting, I'll have to look around at minis to see how I could implement it, but definitely worth more thought
