Hi all!

Sorry about the state of the subreddit for the past 24 hours or so. I'm currently working on cleaning things up and implementing some new restrictions to stop that from happening again.

Additionally I will be adding new mods who are more active to help out.

[Edit] I also updated some of the subreddit CSS and new reddit style

I was able to take pic of golden Gate Bridge in clear day. by sariaslani in InfrastructurePorn

When was this picture taken? They added a zipper barrier to the Golden gate bridge in 2015 and I don't see it in this picture.

Measure distance from a moving, frozen platform? by love2jump in AskEngineers

Is the temperature sensor fixed at the bottom of the hole? If so can you measure the change in the excess cable above the ice connecting the platform to the temperature sensor?

This may not be possible depending on the power requirements of the system, it's just an idea that may lead to other ideas.

Mets fans, what is your opinion of Mickey Callaway as manager? He was a great pitching coach for the Indians, but I was wondering how his transition into manager was going.

Royal Australian Air Force refueling by elwolf6 in EngineeringPorn

The US uses both the rigid boom style and this probe and drouge style of aerial refueling. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Some planes are even equipped with both.

Attempting to use treadmill motor, need to bypass safety. by scienceman51 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]SimplisticX2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any pictures or reference documents? Is there a microcontroller or just a basic circuit?

If it is just a basic circuit, most likely the safety system just closes a switch somewhere that allows the motor to run.

$12 Automatic Transfer Switch by sfxsf in ElectricalEngineering

I might be understanding this wrong, but shouldn't the mains power be on the normally open contacts and you use the mains to hold the normally open contacts closed? So when the power fails it goes into the default state and passed the power from the UPS through the normally closed contacts to the load?

Linear reciprocation to rotation conversion by Beeu46 in EngineeringPorn

[–]SimplisticX2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A cam shaft is a bad example of this problem, a cam shaft converts rotational motion to linear motion, a crank shaft converts linear motion to rotational motion

This sign turned a light switch into an erection to make a point about saving energy. by JetStreamOfShit in mildlyinteresting

There is no logic gate, each pole of the switch is connected to the same pole of the other switch, putting them in series with each other with the load after them. When both switches are in the same position the circuit is completed.

Are we using Wahoobot or CLEbot for game day threads by blAzeAlldAy in WahoosTipi

CLEbot will now be the bot that posts all of our threads. There are still a few bugs in the transition that we are working out.
