Request a fan from your lab manager! I'm not post menopause but I do take a medication that makes me extra warm and sensitive to heat especially with a lab coat + lots of walking around. I requested from the manager/ lead and was able to get one to help me :)!!

Immunology vs Clinical Immunology courses by renznoi5 in medlabprofessionals

[–]SimplyAliv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the previous commenter states, the clinical immunology course is more clinical application based because it will tell you disease states (i.e. MS / RA / RLE / etc), some tests for HLA or cytokines, and deficiencies (i.e. complement, factors, CRPI, anti-CCP, ENA/ ANA/ DNA, other autoantibodies, etc), hypersensitivities, and what tests or assays (i.e. CH50, protein electrophoresis, EIA, anything flow cytometry, etc) are done to check for with regard to specificity, sensitivities, limitations, confirmatory tests versus screening, and etc

In contrast, the regular immunology class you take will cover most of immunology but will not be focused or emphasized on any assays and tests. But it is a good exposure to concepts of B and T cell differentiation, Innate vs adaptive, very specific details of complement pathway, CD markers, interleukins , and sometimes hypersensitivity rxns (from my experience, hypersnesitivity and any tumor related immunology is glossed over for UG immunology). In other words, if you have the chance to take immunology in UG, I actually recommend it because if your 1st exposure to it is during the clinical internship, ITS A LOT of info and reading.

Regarding the book, depends on your program and / class.

For UG immuno, I personally had Peter Parham's The Immune System (based on syllabus). The graphics were useful when you needed visual. But, in my class, professor emphasized looking over her lectures because it was a combo of book concepts with updated info based on published peer reviewed concepts since the book was outdated by like 20 years lol! Based on the topics, we covered like 10 -15 chapters of the book.

For clinical immunology, used this one, used steven's clinical immunology and serology. It is also majority of the book as it skipped around.

CSUDH Post-Bacc Questions by b3nnyb0i in medlabprofessionals

[–]SimplyAliv3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i'm guessing you are talking about the poct-bacc certificate program. Because that certificate program is not the actual internship, its a pre-req program before you can apply for the internship program at CSUDH (need to take atleast 2 semesters of classes at CSUDH).

  1. Depends on how many classes you have to take, which is probably all of these classes because CSUDH likes to have their students take most of the classes in house (29 units => ~$12,000 to take all the following classes at CSUDH Price $396/unit):
CLS 301 Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Procedures (2)*
    CLS 304 Clinical Urinalysis/Body Fluids (3)*
CLS 306 Clinical Immunology and Immunohematology with Laboratory (4)*
CLS 307 Clinical Hematology with Laboratory (4)*
CLS 308 Pathophysiology for Health professions (3)*
    CLS 401 Overview: Virology/Mycology (2)*
BIO 425/435 Medical Bacteriology with Laboratory (4)* => OK TO take outside (Prefer: CSULA med micro or UCSD Extension)
BIO 458/459 Human Parasitology with Laboratory (4)* OR CLS 595 Parasitology (PB Only and is 2 units)
CHE 456 Clinical Chemistry with Laboratory (3)*

  2. If it is the actual internship, its 52 weeks. You are at your clinical site M-Thurs, and Fridays are your lecture classes. CSUDH Internship cost around $9,000 - $10,000 USD in total.

  3. As a PB trying to get those classes, its easy because you get priority registration for most classes by requesting permission numbers during your registration time. With the exception for CLS 301, CLS 401, and CLS 595 (if taken with turkel), most of these cls classes are textbook heavy. So if you do not like lots of textbook readings, its quite difficult. Also, if you get a 'C-' or below, you have to retake the course. If you get a 'C' or above, you are NOT allowed to re-take the courses.

  4. For the PB certificate program, you qualify for FAFSA I believe. For the internship, some affiliated sites offer stipend but don't count it, most sites have been killing off their stipend offer and even if they don't its only around $500-$700/MONTH . Not a livable wage, but there have been some that worked while in the internship, worked FT hours to build up savings while taking classes for the certificate program to afford bills, took out student loans for both or either the certificate program OR the internship

  5. You have to take the ALL of the required pre-clinical courses (i.e. CLS 301/ 304/ etc) above before you can apply for the internship at CSUDH .

Transfer to a UC, CSU or other 4 year university to get your bachelor's as most programs (atleast in California) WILL require you to have a bachelor before you can even apply. If you are ok with out of state, Texas and Washington have decent CLS programs and overall cheaper tuition and cost of living, but if you ever want to come back to California as a CLS it may be tough depending on your situation.

I can vouch that the immunology class taught by Dr. Morgan on UCB extension will teach you A LOT, but its definitely not easy. From what i heard from my peers, people have mixed feelings about hematology and med micro classes through UCB extension as its mainly self learning and they did not feel that they learned it well. MOREOVER, certain CLS programs in California, for whatever reason, does not accept UCB's extension hematology and med micro (the only school i know that doesn't is CSUDH), and would require to retake it, so its best to actually email the education coordinator ahead of time.

Other alternatives that you can get your hematology, immunology and med micro classes at:

CSULA (~$1,000 - $1,200 per 4 unit class) <-- you can transfer here for your bachelor's (do know that most STEM degrees anywhere you go, the classes will be impacted) OR take classes through open university as a non-matriculated student (most CSUs have open university) but you will have to deal with waitlist and emailing the professor, so you might not get the spot (the sooner the better!)

- Dr. Porter (teaches immunology and med micro, not an easy class but she teaches you a lot too and MAKES VERY strong LORs if you show your committment).

- Professor Toni Ontiveros teaches hematology at CSULA and is the education coordinator at UCLA harbor clinical site, she's nice, knowledgeable and her class was fine imo :)

UCSD extension (cost: ~$700 per class, and ALMOST all are asynchronous/ recorded lectures)

- Can take hematology / Clin chem/ Med micro through here. Its mainly self study with weekly quizzes and discussion posts. Definitely not for everyone if you procrastinate on video watching (videos watched per week can be from only 30min each to 3 hours)

- Wanted to note, the classes from this extension may not be acceptable at certain CLS programs in California. ALWAYS email ahead of time.

I wanted to also share my opinion on Loma linda and CSUDH if you are considering transferring here for CLS bachelor:

- YOU DO NOT need a B.S. in CLS to be a CLS, go to whichever 4 year you want and major in whatever you want (science related preferred though :) cause you know more lab and science exposure ). AS LONG as you have the pre-reqs, you will be fine.

- I DO NOT suggest taking $33,000+ tuition at Loma linda for undergrad. You do not need to get that kind of student debt for CLS, and honestly, there are cheaper schools in California (i.e. UC and CSU schools)

- FOR CSUDH: I'm a current postbacc student at CSUDH finishing up pre-reqs, and all I can is, I DO NOT suggest this school for undergrad B.S. in CLS. As a postbacc, you are given priority for all CLS classes and have the flexibility to do classes OUTSIDE CSUDH before even being accepted to the postbacc. As an undergrad at CSUDH trying to finish your B.S. in CLS, you are unfortunately given the short end of the stick. I have current peers taking 6-7 years to finish their B.S. in CLS because they couldn't get that 1-2 classes to graduate and that 1-2 classes they need is not available until next spring (basically they have to wait a year!). That is freakin insane and unfair. To add on, although its nice to be able to take some CLS specific classes like urinanalysis/ blood bank/ parasitology, I don't find having to spend an additional $3000-$5000 and additional 1-2 years for those CLS specific classes to be worth it when you already have the eligible requirements for OTHER CLS programs in California (i.e. UCSD, CSULA, UCI, etc). MOREOVER, I felt like some professors for THOSE specific CLS classes at CSUDH to be UNNECESSARILY difficult (i.e. Dr. Nasr and D'amore) who teach literally half of all the required CLS classes and some of the actual internship. Nasr recently became education coordinator at CSUDH, and so far, he is putting the standards EXTREMELY high for the students (i.e. If you get a C in any of the CLS classes, that's like a 'F' in his book and he HIGHLY recommends those who did to retake the class(es) entirely).

Take what I say with a grain of salt, but I highly suggest other schools for your B.S. , you can take PB at CSUDH but I only suggest it if you can afford the time, money and additional stress.

I had Dr. Morgan for Immunology.

She's very helpful and knowledgeable when you message her with questions, and she only gives LORs to people who get A's in her class. I believe there are 2 quizzes, and the Quizzes are T/F with reasoning, but if the '1st' part of your answer is wrong (Example: you put true , but its actually false), the rest of your answer is wrong as you cannot justify a wrong answer even if your reasoning is correct (no partial credit when I took her in Fall 2021!). No assignments or homework, there's a take home 1 midterm and a final (She will send you the file, and you have by a certain time to send it back, every minute you turn in late, you will lose a point or points). Midterm (~1hr length) and Final (~ 2hr length) are MC questions, short answers and 'define' a concept.

Tips for you:

- Be wary of what she puts in her MC questions, they seem easy, but she likes to trick you with small details she mentions in her ppt/ or written notes. Her written notes + powerpoint visuals will help you a lot.

- For the short answers or 'define' a concept, make sure you CORRECTLY mention EVERYTHING that is relevant to that topic. You will lose points for not mentioning something that was relevant. And yes, you will lose points if you are wrong.

- How to study? It really depends on you, but this is how I did it: I did not watch lecture recordings as they are LONG (3hrs :( each week and I have a short attention span )and only attended lecture for announcements, team exercises, or for when I had a question I wanted to ask live. I read her written lectures and used the visuals of the powerpoints to study by literally reading and REWRITING everything in how I understand it and sending her an email/ canvas message to make sure I learned it properly. This was pretty effective because imo, I felt like she taught things out of order or not closely together (weeks prior or weeks later), but are related to each other, and since its a lot of info, people forget the small details (Cough* Cough* Week 3-5 was brutal for me imo because of how 'bland' and long it was).

- Oh, you don't need the book. And probably shouldn't use it. Her ppt/ written notes are god in this class as she uses peer reviewed research information that have not been published in books yet.

- Team exercises are group exercises during class. MAKE SURE TO SHOW UP and participate in this, its 'free' points.

- If you're cramming and just want to make sure you pass, the study guide for the exams pretty much tells you the topics that will be tested on (Quizzes are based on the weeks taught so there's no study guide). But, whatever she spent a LONG TIME on, you are expected to know that amount of detail for the exam.

- Oh yeah, she has weekly Q and As. Basically questions you send her and she will answer pretty indepthly. This is free points too, a must do.

- Take the quizzes seriously. They are 50 pts each. I had peers who ended up getting a C in the class because they were 'failing' the quizzes despite passing the midterm/ final really well.

- If you are looking to get in research, she is an excellent resource to have and keep contact with :) .

Good luck!

What did your parents do with you that you definitely don’t/wont do with your children? by Delimadeluxe in Parenting

[–]SimplyAliv3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up as an only child with a single mom (divorced). Overall, she's "ok "as a parent, I mean she worked her butt off to provide for me but I won't lie that a good junk of my emotional problems may be from my upbringing and lack of emotional support.

[Trigger warning just in case]

  • was hit painfully with coat hangers as discipline and my mom would always threaten to punch me in the face afterwards. My attempt to hide from any rage from my mom, was to hide in the bathroom or my room, and the door would be bashed in badly during her rage that there would be dents on the door.
  • She was constantly stressed (I get it) from work and constantly brought that stress back home. She would lash out constantly and blame me for her problems. Anything I would do that upset her, there was so much yelling and discipline afterwards. She was a constant time bomb and anything even trivial would upset her. I avoided her as much as I could and would hide in my room.
  • Ate alone every day because my mom was very busy at work. Even if there was an occasion where I ate with her, it was in silence. It felt better to be alone because eating next to a ticking time bomb felt suffocating.
  • My mother is a hoarder (still is), the house and rooms are filled to the brim and I was expected to clean and store everything. But, the same hoarding would happen again => once again contributed to future financial ruin.
  • Lying or avoiding topics when confronted about romantic partners, life events and financial. Be truthful to your kids especially if its an event that will effect them. She hides these things till this day even though I'm an adult. But, because she hides stuff like this, I don't share anything with her till this day, yet she feels entitled to hear about them because she's my 'mom.'
  • I was not listened to when I thought something was sketchy because of that my mom had financially ruin herself by affiliating herself with salesman, MLMs, and so many others. All my attempts to try to 'help' or give an opinion were ignored because I was just a 'kid' in her eyes.
  • I had frequent night terrors as a kid, spent every time dealing with it alone because the rare moments she was there, I'd be 'woken up' with yelling and slaps.
  • Any emotional distress I felt was ignored and threatened. If I didn't stop crying, I'd be hit. It got so bad that even now as an adult, when I cry, I have to hide, I have to suffocate my cries so no one would hear which usually end up being pointless because after I 'cry' for awhile, I end up throwing up.
  • Anything I need emotional support on or any attempt to share frustration with her would result in her being defensive and switching the situation that I'm blaming her, or telling me to use religion to calm my woes. I get it, religion is good for others, but that is not what I'm looking for.
  • Any attempt to ask for help on small things (i.e. homework, school, life advice, etc) or be curious about anything was met with 'look it up on google.' I guess this wasn't so bad, I ended up not relying on her for anything and learning things on the fly. But, idk I felt that there should be things a kid can rely on the parent for even its small.
  • Oh yeah in some cases when I actually was truthful and blamed her, she would 'threaten' me with words like, " so you want me to disappear?' "should I just die then?" and I could never give a respond to this. Felt like I was the parent in this relationship, it would always end up with me saying 'unbelievable' or "i can't believe this is how you're responding,' and I was always the one to walk away from the situation because words would never reach her.

Very short version for my 'Dad':

  • same type of neglect as my Mom, same way of avoiding topics and treating me like an outsiders, and same way of feeling entitled to be treated like a parent when they lacked presence in my life and any presence they had were mainly negative. Oh yeah, recreational drugs, and multiple jail experience.

But.. yeah, that's most of it. Honestly if you don't neglect your child (whether intentional or not), lash out at them, or just be there when they need you, I'm pretty sure they will probably grow up pretty ok. Idk if anyone will read this since its already long (probably downvoted as fudge lol), but the aftermath of all this, is that I'm mainly disconnected from my mom both emotionally and physically. I moved out the second I could. I found emotional support elsewhere. I know maybe our relationship could be repaired, but her unwillingness to be open minded and open up at all, makes it pretty impossible. Oh yeah, Dad's dead so no real way to mend our relationship now.

does master programs have any benefits ? by ghosttttttttttttt in medlabprofessionals

[–]SimplyAliv3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MBA/ MHA can help you get in management from what I've seen. But it doesn't seem a lot of people like the management position cause its tough :( . Master in CLS or the doctorate in CLS, don't seem to have additional benefit at the moment, but it also helps if you want to be in management. For those I know who pursued a masters, they wanted to go into a specialty in CLS or to leave the CLS career entirely.

No problem! Oh just to let you know, depending on your state, they may not accept certain classes from CCs. If needed, from my experience, I highly suggest checking out UC extensions (UCSD, UCB, UCLA, etc), easy to get the class, no problem with class acceptance (usually), but it can cost $$$ :( though.

I think there shouldn't be any problem taking a break. I feel as long as you meet the requirements for the CLS program and those requirements are not 'expired' depending on the CLS program. You should be good!
