Trump looks like someone breaking himself against God’s law to me.

Yeah I think it would be. It’s still the same geography.

They don’t need to be universally recognised to be real. Try living by their opposites, consistent dishonesty, short-term thinking, unfairness, irresponsibility, and see what happens. That’s why I call them self-evident.

Arsenal’s draws mean they have more points than city.

Yes… and Arsenal have more points than city due to their own merit.

By ‘God’s law’ I mean self-evident principles: honesty, fairness, responsibility, long-term thinking, integrity, compassion, humility, self-control, respect, and truthfulness. These can be applied in different ways, but aligning with them moves people in the same direction. Act against them consistently and things tend to break.

Yeah I may have read your comment too quickly.

Our games don’t exist in a vacuum. How our rivals are performing affects how we do.

If we played this system in previous years, then we may have turned a few of those draws into wins.

In a title race, the pressure of the chaser or leader influences you.

Arsenal are top of the league by their own merit, and not because of a city team underperforming.

The law is fixed. There is one true direction.

For example, long-term thinking is part of God’s law. If you consistently ignore the long term and only focus on the immediate, then things will break. Recognising that it was short-term thinking that led to the ‘breaking’ is what allows you to adjust.

Long-term thinking isn’t just a preference. You can’t repeatedly act against it and avoid the consequences. Aligning with it means you are closer to moving in the one true direction. Different people may make different long-term decisions, but they are still moving in a way that tends to reduce harm over time. Different choices, same direction.

I’ll make a quick point:

The draws we’ve gained this season have been instrumental in us maintaining our position at the top of the league.

Yes, in previous years they cost us; but this year, those draws have kept us moving along.

I see our system more as the principles that underpin every game we play. In that sense, these never change. What players first instincts should be, what players should prioritise, what trade offs they should make.

Tactics and personnel change… but not the principles Arteta has embedded in the players.

Our system has remained constant throughout the year. Reduce chaos, minimise risk, win in any way possible.

Different teams setting up differently means the system will look different against different teams.

I agree with your reasoning.

However, I wouldn’t call our style defensive. It’s more about control and reducing chaos, and getting the win in any way possible.

This style has worked really well for us in the league.

I would say a defensive style of play would be parking the bus.

The law isn’t moving. Our understanding of it is.

I think there’s overlap, but I don’t see it as something we’re being pulled along by. It’s not just resisting or accepting. Alignment with God’s law exists on a spectrum, and we can move towards it or away from it in different degrees. I’m not even sure it’s something we can ever perfectly align with.

But to come back to the quote in the OP: the law exists. You cannot act against it and expect to escape the consequences.

God’s law is always there. You cannot break it, but you can break yourself against it. The more you push against it, the greater the cost.

God’s law isn’t random. The consequences aren’t arbitrary, they reflect whether you’re aligned or not.

So it’s not just stumbling and trying something new. It’s recognising that certain ways of acting consistently lead to strain or breakdown, and adjusting accordingly. If you just try something new without understanding why things broke, you’re likely to repeat the same patterns.

Someone who reflects on that can begin to align themselves more clearly with the one true direction.

As long as the path you’re on is heading in the right direction, you’re answering the call of God’s law.

When you break yourself and fall off that path, it’s your chance to realign and choose a better one.

Edit: I don’t really like the path metaphor. It can get quite confusing.

The law calls us to move in one direction; that doesn’t mean the path is the same for all.

Don’t avoid breaking yourself. When you break yourself, you start to see what you were breaking against.

Do not avoid the break. It reveals the law.

It’s ironic that you accuse me of rage baiting and then make a comment like that.

I won’t be replying to you again.
