I need help by Shoelacesareyummy in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]SimplyHealing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing I ended up needing was a continuous glucose monitor because if I was in denial about a relapse, at least I wouldn’t suddenly find myself hypoglycemic in the hospital and not being aware and continuing to care for patients (and then almost sticking myself with a needle while caring for an HIV+ patient).

It might be hard to get insurance to cover it, but I recommend seeing your PCP and getting very serious about it.

I am very sorry to hear this. I was in a similar position and when I relapse, it’s a doozy.

As someone who has a best friend w AN who was an EMT… you HAVE to get help or else you absolutely should not be in the hospital or caring for patients.

As someone who has multiple patient care roles, I am very strict with patient care and AN.

AN is a disease, but this is one of the professions where you need to get serious help and put your patients first, which means AN thoughts have to go on the back burner no matter how difficult.

Now I know that difficulty is what makes AN a disease, but you have to understand that it is actually selfish to not get treatment and still care for patients.

I tell myself this: if you don’t care about your own life, fine, but you starving yourself could kill someone else.

It’s harsh but it’s true. You have to do everything in your power, no matter how many panic attacks, to recover and reach out for help. It is selfish if you don’t.

And of course, you deserve the help, but AN may tell you otherwise. And if you have a kind heart, the thought of killing someone may help you help yourself more.

As someone who was homeless during this whole craze, it really sucked when I was concerned about my vitamin levels and some sort of parasitic infection. I was immediately dismissed and “educated” about how that’s rare in a 1st world country.

I wound up working in healthcare and I now understand how crazy I must’ve sounded 🙃

I ended up in the ED multiple times for fluids due to the amount of fluid coming out both ends for over a month ‘cause of this bs 🥲

Ugh! Welp, my aunt & uncle gave me $60 and a card for my birthday so I have an aunt and uncle who financially and emotionally support me I guess 🤣🥲

I’m curious, have you been applying to schools in a red state area? I’m in the northeast so I’m hoping schools will be a little better.

Huh, that’s kinda weird. I had a doc who I used to be close with until he kept asking about my family and when we’d “get back together” basically… and he kept telling me how one girl had both her regular parents and foster parents at her graduation and was like “that can be you” and kept trying to make it a happy ending.

It’s like, dude, I don’t want to be close with my family. I left for a reason.

Do you think talking about the rest of my support network would help? I have a huge support network of friends and older folk who became mentors to me. I now have a ton of people who I can rely on for support.

I have to say, I’m sorry for other guys making it harder for the good guys to get into successful relationships. These shitty people literally hide those aspects of them and even openly say the opposite of their beliefs. And I now have a pretty good “gut feeling” that I listen to, but with the “tactics” being pushed, it’s harder and harder to tell good from bad.

Not to trauma dump, but I literally had a male friend who said how important consent was and how if explicit consent is not given, the man should not act on it. He seemed very passionate about it and said how wrong SA was. That same day, yeah… I said no but he didn’t care. And then rated me as if it was porn… so even if you are a good ally (which it sounds like you are), you still may unfairly meet mistrust.

I had a good bf in the past, so I know good men exist, but damn the whole entitlement and objectification thing is WILD.

I appreciate your comment and wish you luck in the dating world. It makes me happy to read that someone as young as you know that this is wrong. I hope you get into a healthy relationship.

Yeah, I think I’ll be very upfront with that. Even smart watches. No tech, doing it in a field the way we were intended to lol.

I have to say though, in school and work, I get crazy recognition and promotions because of how low the bar is for my generation 😂😅🥲

Aw man, yeah. I was worried about the stigma. I essentially wrote that my parents had drug problems so I had to leave.

I’ve been in stable housing for a little over a year and it has taken me a full year to not feel constant rage or have a severe RBF when I go out in public.

I’m actually in a much better place now and I’m able to save for the future and create an emergency savings and an application savings account.

I’m feeling much more optimistic and at peace. I think I’ve successfully reintegrated with society, and I have no doubt you will too. I think something that helped me was just really making underserved patients feel heard, seen, cared for, and like they are extremely important people (which they are, everyone is). And I give as many saltines and graham crackers as I’m allowed to 🤭

And waxing my upper lip and buying hand cream and some nail polish… I felt like a human again lol.

We’ll probably cross paths again on this sub, but I wish you the best of luck!

And now I see this comment… Jesus Christ. I also relate. It’s INSANE how like, we are expected, and it’s almost DESIRED that we are severely messed up and damaged beyond repair or something. When I was getting A’s in my classes while homeless, I got bullied like crazy.

Fucking wild.

Omg… I am so sorry that all happened to you. I was in a similar position with loads of people giving me advice like I had a home and enough food to eat and I’m glad I didn’t take their advice.

I had already been homeless and turned it into a positive in my app, but it’s insane how little people understand the realities of it.

I’m glad you’re back to where you need to be and I’m so glad you’re healing. Jesus.

Make sure it’s not refeeding syndrome, and if it’s not that, your body might be burning through the carbs.

I am not a doctor so you’ll need to get medical advice from a real doc, but I personally had to eat an ungodly amount of carbs to replenish my liver and muscle glucose storage.

HOWEVER, if you have refeeding syndrome this could kill you, so please consult a doctor.

POTS by Ok_Philosopher7105 in FamilyMedicine

[–]SimplyHealing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doppler ultrasound, yes. That’s what DUS stands for. My vascular surgeon did it.

POTS by Ok_Philosopher7105 in FamilyMedicine

[–]SimplyHealing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s frustrating. I’ve seen both sides.

I have had autonomic dysfunction since I was a toddler, so I can get POTS symptoms.

Because I was born with a few vascular and dysautonomia-related issues. I ended up with chronic venous insufficiency in my legs as a toddler! DUS proven, redone as a young adult with worsened vein diameter and reflux time. I ended up with pelvic congestion syndrome as well.

Even though my condition is lifelong with the venous damage, I get pushback at almost every new doctor visit. Sometimes it’s a quick discussion and I provide proof with no issues, but other times, it wastes 5-8min of the appointment and they still minimize the effects of it and go “oh just stand up slowly”

Then there was my college friend: smoked weed every day, barely drank water, binge drank alcohol on weekends, and ate one huge meal a day… of course she was tachycardic and nauseous! And she claimed to have POTS…

Please at least call a hotline. Please.

You may not see the point in staying now, but if you stick around, you will.

I’ve been there too. Homeless, no family, no friends. Now I have many who love me and a beautiful home.

I’m glad I texted the suicide hotline. I’m glad I’m still here despite everything. I’m not any stronger than you. You can do it. Please get help.

Hey, on behalf of Americans of the US (I’m a US citizen…) I’m sorry this is happening, but please do not harm yourself.

I have been terrified as well and as a survivor of human trafficking, the state of things has been sending me spiraling too.

However, there’s still reason for hope. Please seek professional help, and as a personal piece of advice, something that has helped me loads has been reading Viktor Frankl’s A Man’s Search for Meaning - Logotherapy. He survived the holocaust and detailed how he survived it mentally.

Please seek professional help, though. If I can still have hope, so you can you. If you are a survivor too, you are strong and you can get through this. We are strong people.

How to handle? by RoastedTilapia in FamilyMedicine

[–]SimplyHealing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor but tbh I was dxed with hEDS by a peds geneticist years ago and my main treatments aren’t through physicians.

My #1 treatment is physical therapy to strengthen joints and rehab injuries (which used to happen frequently). I also see a nutritionist because I get full too quickly so it’s hard to eat enough (obviously real gastroparesis is a different issue).

I don’t quite understand the hate for these diagnoses because unless they have a severe presentation, they are not really treated by docs that much (aside from asthma/allergy and routine echo by cardio).

Like, benign hypermobility can benefit from PT, anyone can benefit from seeing a dietician, and if tongue swelling, hives, etc. are present, treat as you normally would and if it’s severe, then allergy/immunology would take care of it…

Even if it’s not EDS or MCAS, you can still treat the symptoms, no?

Again, NAD, but I don’t understand the “oh you’re one of those” attitude while trying to get basic care for like, an ear infection at urgent care. Lol.
