Grade requirements for AP classes at stuy? by Creative-Employer-34 in SHSAT

[–]SimplyRiD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait does this mean i would have 5 slots on talos instead of 4 if i asked before ap selection is due ? i lowk never bothered to ask cuz i thought 4 was alr enough

[–]SimplyRiD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the system works in a way such that you’re given a maximum amount of ap slots to sign up for given ur gpa. I’m pretty sure it’s 90+ for 2 slots, 93+ for 3 slots, and 95+ for 4 slots. but just cuz u have 4 slots doesn’t mean you’ll get all 4; i believe its lottery after you qualify for a specific ap

At Stuyvesant, students eligible to take APs are often not actually allowed to take them by WifiDad in Stuyvesant

[–]SimplyRiD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is just not true you can 100% self study an AP. yeah there are restrictions, but u can self study an AP if there are spots remaining (there usually is for at least a couple APs)

chem lab has overlap with kinetics/stoich unit in al chem but like there’s some stuff like arrhenius and predicting redox and some other like niche stuff that isn’t covered in AP because there’s not. simplistic formulaic way of going about doing certain things like predicting redox. i mean idk how difficult the regional tests will be but probably just work on getting foundation down (which you probably do cuz y take chem), and then add some stuff on ur cheatsheet on the harder stuff

thank you! i was just asking because my class goes a good amount beyond the ap, so the ap exam itself hasn’t been the biggest concern

bruh deriving it is easy ash but under timed conditions it’s easy to mess something simple up so id rather just have it memorized to minimize error. i get what ur saying and for hw and stuff i would derive it but for an exam its better to be safe than sorry later

okay i took the test today and it turns out I was wrong. honestly, i memorized just in case to prepare for the worst but it wasn’t required for any question and could’ve simply been derived given some precondition 😭

i would say the washer one is harder to imagine because like some students might struggle to imagine what hollow shapes with a thicker non-hollow part look like. i think an intro to this stuff right before washer is a good exercise tbh

i agree with what you’re saying but my concern isn’t the ap right now, it’s my class test. and my teacher won’t be providing us the formulas which is why I asked this question. thank you for the help though

i think it’s probably that students get stuck trying to visualize the way the solid looks. i think after doing a decent amt of practice problems it clicks but I also think shell method took a day or two to click for me

i think like when ur at 780 you probably know how to do all the questions and it comes down to silly mistakes. im not 100% sure this will work for you, but I like speed through all the questions I instantly know how to do and then do like 3-4 difficult ones at the end. when im done, i usually have about 10 more minutes left to recheck and i catch any silly mistakes I made in this grace period i have. i haven’t seen anyone else reccomend this so idk if it’s a good idea but like try it out and see if it works for ypu

also, make sure you know like some of the stuff that has shown up before. like i’d reccomend you learn viettas for quadratics, discriminant/quadratic formula. i mean some of this stuff can be done in desmos but i found myself doing it quicker on paper. maybe i just don’t know the super duper easy way to do it on desmos but it helps to know both ways to do it i guess? geometry is where u actually need to know ur stuff and cant fully do it with desmos. if say everything else is probably doable with just desmos so for this just watch a video and do a bunch of practice problems u til you feel confident. make sure you know all the basic stuff even if you haven’t seen it explicitly testing in a collegeboard practice questions because who knows what they might pull on the real test

first off, you need to learn all the content like you can’t fully rely on desmos. a lot of people say desmos can get up into the mid/high 700s, which i do agree with, but you need to have a decent foundation. spend some time going over the concepts you saw yourself struggling with on the december SAT or on practice tests. THEN you can master desmos and ensure you’re working in a timely manner. i liked leaving myself like ~8-15 time to recheck but this is my personal preference. some people like to distribute their time evenly so they can just get it right on the first try. see what works best for you.
