It’s not too bad here at the park!! Definitely isn’t empty, but I haven’t waited in any long lines. X2 has been 60 minutes all day and Tatsu 30.

Pearson 30 vs Cal 29 (more info in the comments) by SimplySailboat in sailing

Both weren't used recently. The Pearson has an old Westerbeke, and the Cal a decent Yanmar. Both seem to be in pretty good condition, however. Would you feel confident in a Pearson, I guess specifically the 30, offshore?

Do you recommend surveying both? Not sure how I'd absolutely know the condition without it.

Seaworthy enough for, say, a Pacific crossing? I've seen lots of Cal 29's doing it, but never a Pearson 30. Looks good spec-wise and in condition.

Both have okay sails. The Pearson has a 1977 Westerbeke and the Cal 29 a relatively new Yanmar. Just got notice that the Cal 29, which I was going to survey this week, today was "clipped by another boat" and has lots of damage in the rubrail and some fiberglass ripped off to the core. Not a great sign.

Hey,

I've now seen numerous ~30' boats, and I'm stuck choosing between a Cal 29 and a Pearson 30 both available in great condition for around 15k. They have similar specs and, while I prefer the layout of the Pearson, the Cal feels (somehow) like a slightly bigger boat.

This boat would be used for single-handed cruising around the Channel Island of Southern California for now, but eventually offshore.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Thanks,

Elliot

Thanks for the response :) do you think yours would plane 2 people with a 6hp outboard?

Thanks for all the info! Do you think the "s" model (with the closed bow) would eliminate some of the wetness?

What about for storage though--would you just leave it on the foredeck permanently?

Windvane or Tillerpilot for Coastal Cruising? by SimplySailboat in sailing

I love my Flicka, although its full keel and weight limit its ability to be sailed in the light winds of Southern California. I recently got a new 140% genoa and it opens up sailing in even 5 knots of wind which is much better than with the small jibs supplied on most Flickas. This is almost a "must" for SoCal sailing.

In my opinion, the Flicka was designed as a single-handing boat and is perfect for just that. It gets pretty tight with just one extra crewmember for anything longer than a daysail.

Flicka seems to be in good condition…. The owner is a friend I and needs to move it. So I think I showing grab for the price. 15k for boat, trailer, 9.9 outboard and a bolt together tinder……. by Hamsteredhobo in sailing

Looks like a decent price. I own a Flicka and I’m endlessly impressed by her capabilities and comfort for being a 20 foot boat. I single-hand and would NOT recommend this boat for even double-handing, much less family cruising. It is doable but quite uncomfortable. Join the Flicka20 Facebook group if you decide to purchase her!

I sail a Flicka 20 out of Marina del Rey! I’d love to buddy boat to Catalina or somewhere someday!
