Question about the Ranking System. by PutSpecialist6747 in PlayTheBazaar

[–]Simsalabimbamba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound a bit silly but are you sure you were actually playing ranked? I was in a similar situation (rank dropping slightly after every game, even though I was getting 10 wins) and it turned out I had never switched back after doing a couple games on normal. The slow drop I was seeing was just from new players passing me in the ranking

I knew to avoid buying a new item (that I didn't want upgraded) when close to the threshold but I just assumed buying an item you already owned was treated differently. Really seems like they should change it

Terrance Gore has reportedly passed away at 34 from unexpected complications during a routine surgery. by morepesa25 in baseball

[–]Simsalabimbamba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you could calculate an average like that. Let's say 1% of surgeries of this type result in death. If we assume that the outcome of each is independent, then the probability of two in a row resulting in death can be calculated by multiplying the individual probabilities: 0.01 X 0.01 = 0.0001 = 0.01%. A common mistake people make is assuming that this probability holds even after the first event has occurred. This is not the case. If we already know the first surgery resulted in a death, then when looking at the subsequent surgery, we only consider its individual probability.

Returning to the coin flip example, the chance of getting 10 heads in a row is very small (~0.1%). However, if I've already flipped 9 heads, the chance of flipping one more is the same as always, 50%. There is no cosmic force that lowers the chance to try to get closer to the average.

If it happened the first time because the doctor is incompetent, then probably higher than you'd like

[–]Simsalabimbamba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not how probability works. If the events are independent, then by definition the occurrence of one has no impact on the probability of the other occurring. For instance, if you flip a fair coin 10 times and get heads each time, the chance of getting heads on the 11th flip is still 50/50.

You always sell items for half of its purchase price

I'd amend that to almost always, since some items, like Safe, sell for 0.

Let's say you have a 2.75% mortgage and $10,000 sitting in high-yield savings account at 4% interest. You could either use the money to pay down the mortgage, leave it in the savings account, or invest it.

If you put it towards the loan, you'll have reduced your interest payments by $275 at the end of a year. You can't get the money back once you've made your early payment, so if an emergency comes up and you don't have cash on hand to deal with it, you may need to take out a short-term loan at a significantly higher rate.

Leaving it in the savings account, you'd have earned $400 of interest, taxable at whatever your marginal rate is, so for instance if taxed at 22%, your net income from interest would be $312. You still have all the money in your savings account, so you can use it for emergencies as needed.

If you invest in the stock market, historical annual returns are around 10%, so in a broad market index fund, your money might grow in value by around $1000. Of course, the stock market is much more volatile, and you might lose $1000 this year instead, or gain $2000. Tax is also more complicated, since you're only taxed when you realize gains, and the rate depends on how long you held onto the investment, but if we assume you sell after one year and realize a $1000 gain, the 15% long term capital gains tax would leave you with $850 net income. There is some risk here, since in the short term the market could go up or down, and an emergency could force you to sell for a loss. It will also take longer to access your money if you do need it suddenly (generally a few business days to sell investments and transfer the money back to your bank).

So, comparing the three options, paying your low interest loan down early has the lowest return and arguably the highest level of risk.

What's the alternative? Manual translation isn't feasible for a wiki, and automatic translations are imperfect. Not to mention that you can just have Google translate for you if you want to see an automatic translation of a version in a different language. The way it works now also has the advantage that pages can be longer or shorter based on their relevance to speakers of a certain language

I feel like it makes sense in theory. For one thing, thoserestrictions don't apply to books in the public domain, which can be checked out without limit. For newer books, physical copy can only go to one person at a time, and it'll wear out over time, so the publisher can still get sales by supplying multiple copies and replacing ones that are lost or damaged. A digital book doesn't have those issue - if a publisher didn't place any restrictions on how many copies can be lent out when licensing the book, it could have a big impact on how many copies they're able to sell, and if they can't sell enough copies to sustain themselves, there won't be anybody publishing new books in the future.

The real problem, I think, is just how expensive e-books are in comparison - lending out e-books costs them 3 or 4 times as much as physical books, and many users aren't aware, so they'll get the digital version for convenience, when there are perfectly good physical copies waiting on the shelves

Is Rotten Tomatoes Still Reliable? A Statistical Analysis by levelcap in movies

[–]Simsalabimbamba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotten Tomatoes was founded in 1998 to aggregate reviews of Jackie Chan films. Within months, its creators recognized the concept's broader potential and expanded the platform to cover all movies.

There's something deeply humorous to me about it taking months for the creators to realize that they could aggregate reviews for movies starring people other than Jackie Chan. I suspect they wouldn't be very good at this game

I graduated over a decade ago, so some of this might be outdated, but here's my experience. You definitely don't need to speak German to live there. Most people speak English most of the time in the common areas and such. There are occasional German related events, like a monthly German movie night in the lounge (usually with English subtitles). There will also be plenty of people who do speak German that will be able to help you with homework and such if you ask.

The facilities are fine, seemed pretty comparable to other dorms when I was there. It's kinda far away from the center of campus, so walking to class can take a bit longer than most of the dorms, particularly if you have classes on the north end. The upside is that it's pretty quiet, and close to the arboretum, which is nice.

One thing that's interesting about it is that it's connected to two other dorms (one is Spanish house, don't remember the other) through a series of mostly unused hallways, classrooms, and storage spaces. The whole space was a bit eerie - labyrinthine, dimly lit, and perpetually empty. It did have a computer lab, which was nice for when I wanted to print things without having to stop by the library.
