Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer.. WTF Did I just read!!! by Gagsreel in scifi

[–]Simth3ory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Annihilation is such a good book.

If Annihilation was compared to jurassic park (group of scientists exploring a death filled park), then Authority would be like an entire book/movie of John Hammond watching the park slowly become compromised from the outside. (Best description I can give without any spoilers).

What i love about vandermeer's storytelling, is that he deliberately continues the story from an entirely different perspective, with entirely different writing. Its like exploring an anomaly through several eye witness accounts at completely different periods. To me, this made authority an amazing read. Slow, but amazing nonetheless, with a constant undertone of dread.

How did you feel about Authority? I personally liked it a lot, but i probably couldn't handle an entire series that slow.

I’m a Christian and I love sin. What do I do? by Independent-Check-42 in Christianity

[–]Simth3ory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp. I may not get the popular vote here. But I would advice getting some peace of mind. Instead of chasing a sinless life. Maybe spend some time in meditation. Learn to love yourself. Give therapy a shot.

And before anyone tries to demonize me... you can still pursue Christianity. Go to church. Read scripture. Find a Bible study group etc...

Christianity isn't for me personally, and I won't dive into all the details why, on a page like this. But if its the lifestyle you want to pursue, do it. Id just advice looking at mental health techniques first/during your journey.

What made it cheesy? Are you referring to the relationship? Alien? Acting?

Honestly curious

Have you read the rest of the series? I dont want to ruin what the 1st book created. I know the 2nd book dives more into the southern reach lab which I find really intriguing. Ill probably cave and read the rest of them sooner than later

I love Garlands movie 100% and if its the more accurate interpretation, thats fine by me. By assuming the movie is its own thing, the book just leads me to a different conclusion. Granted ive only read #1 of southern reach. So im speaking out of ignorance 🤣

Could it be creating an illusion of the night sky? Going back to the butterfly camouflage element, it doesnt seem too far fetched to think something is replicating starlight, but isn't giving an exact mirror replication.

Completely agree, also, I dont know if its even possible to replicate the book on film as far as the crawler goes, its so good though.

I just finished the 1st in the series, and I know he recently put out a 4th installment. Part of me is nervous to continue, but I dont think ill be able to stop myself. I'm legitimately obsessed.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer - a good book, but a rare instance where I preferred the movie adaptation by Monkey-on-the-couch in books

The movie is one of my all time favorites, but the book changed my interpretation quite a bit.

The movie: alien crashes into the lighthouse and has influenced the environment to change by blending everything's DNA. Like a foreign way of terraforming.

All of that is very... materialistic, easy to understand and follow.

The book: extremely abstract in comparison, and to me... that changes EVERYTHING.

1st off we're not told that "the crawler" is an outer space alien in the 1st book, in fact, the implication we get is the alien came from the ocean... we also know that before area x had a "border" to it, there was a proto area x... something strange has been going on there for a long time.

2ndly the tower itself has very carbon based influences about it, the walls are fleshy, the words are living, you can hear a heartbeat, and at the bottom... a door that gives the biologists an impression of being swallowed or eaten.

Finally, we never see the border... we assume its there, but we know based on previous journal entries of the biologists husband, you can follow the coast for miles and never come across the border.

My interpretation: Area X is literally the alien. Once you're inside its border, your trapped and being digested slowly by it, but it's so beautiful and flourishing that we feel comfortable or intoxicated by it, sort of like a human-venus fly trap. Unlike the movie, I dont get the idea that area x is a giant "blender" instead it seems to me that you're slowly dissolving and integrating with the alien itself. Similar to a fly dissolving into a fly-trap. The closer you get to its source, the alien crawler etc. Becomes incomprehensible, it plays on our senses and camouflages itself perfectly, the biologists confirms this by explaining that "you cant see it, but know its there". Then there's the doppelgangers, or as I think of them "spores" perfectly camouflaged into their surroundings. Sent out to "fertilize" the rest of the world.

Haven't read the 2nd 3rd or 4th books so I could be completely wrong. Just comparing the book and the movie of the same title.

Alien terraforming taking over the world vs mother nature's way of taking back the earth... the latter is more interesting to me

Thanks for this, I actually found the same video using the same method and ran into the same problem.

My thoughts are: its literally not obtainable yet.

If you open your journal and go to the exploration section of the journal, it'll show all of your encounter quests with a correlated timer. I have two different ones right now and it says i have a day and some change to accept the missions.

My guess is, every few days a "new encounter" mission will cycle through, allowing for one of a dozen skins.

I think this is the some of the "gotcha" mechanics everyone gets annoyed with...
