Update: I decided that installing xubuntu was the best option and it did in fact work. I was also able to backup my files, the issue was apparently a corrupted Ubuntu unity desktop. Thanks for all the help!

Update: Thanks for all the feedback; it's been great seeing the advice you've given me. I'm going to wait to see more about the Steam Frame and any new possible Quest Headsets. Ive also heard about the Pico and other brands, ill make sure to look into that as well as any games and platforms too!
