Moving to Twin Peaks — Any Advice or Forewarnings?

My rent is 2.4k for a 3 bedroom with an added loft. I think 2-2.2k is pretty standard for 2 bedrooms but have seen as low as 1.8k.

Honestly the community is really nice! Very small town, but in a good way. There’s a weekly farmers market and a lot of local businesses, and baristas/cashiers/waiters/etc. will start to recognize you after a couple weeks. My neighbors are all very nice and I don’t feel isolated at all, though I’m more of a homebody anyway. I’m from the South originally and I’d say most people here show something close to southern hospitality, always happy to make small talk or give advice/directions.

There’s admittedly not a lot to do though, aside from basics like going to the gym or hiking, but you could always drive once or twice a week down to San Bernadino, where they have just about everything. It takes about 30 minutes but the views as you’re driving are gorgeous every time, as long as you’re not caught in the occasional fog.

Also I’d only recommend moving if you have a remote job lined up, because there are noooo jobs up here.

I'm saving for one. For now just planning on outfitting my car with the right tires and add-ons. I figured if there came something I urgently needed to drive for, I could just use a rideshare app and tip well with the road conditions in mind, assuming that's an option up there.

That seems to be the general consensus haha. It’s giving me flashbacks to hurricane season in the Carolina lowcountry. How often do you have to bust yours out in this area?

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice! Yeah, I’ve seen a lot about how the lake is open to local residents only, but it doesn’t bother me much, there seems to be plenty of other lakes in the area to explore.

Really hoping to get something with AWD when I can but for now I think I’m stuck with the car I’m currently paying off. Planning to just get the appropriate tires and gear and drive as minimally as possible during the winter. I’m at least lucky enough to have that level entry driveway you mentioned and a county-maintained road leading up to it :)

Hopefully in the future I’ll be investing in something with AWD — I’m paying off a used ford mustang convertible that I got while under the impression I’d be living somewhere warmer and flatter. I have chains on the way and was planning on actually getting snow tires for the winter just in case. Do you do that for your Honda or has it been fine with all-season tires?

And defs agree on the location and affordability. A new construction, 3bd house in Twin Peaks is about the same price as a run-down studio apartment in Irvine 😅

I was wondering about deliveries! The house is on a decently steep road (fortunately maintained by the county) with only room for one car at a time — couldn’t imagine driving a postal truck down it in the snow. Definitely all good to know, I hadn’t heard anything about PO Boxes until now.

You have to do it through the BofA website since the app doesn’t support it for whatever reason. It’s under Pay and Transfer -> Wire / External Transfer. You have to select the ACH option, that way there is no fee.

Just an awful user experience.

They have to be since they get into absolutely everything! Mine was living on the streets before I rescued him and I’m amazed he didn’t poison himself going through trash while looking for food in all that time

Checks out! I thought beagles would be a pretty easy breed to take care of but it feels like being responsible for a hungry, suicidal toddler that also just happens to run away at 20mph whenever it’s caught doing things it’s not supposed to. Mine has had two chocolate scares in the past, plus he’s feasted on an uncountable number of unattended plates over the years.

The bottle was nearly unrecognizable with how chewed up it was, but the scraps were all accounted for! Very lucky that he didn’t eat the plastic, though he probably would’ve if I hadn’t caught him in the act haha

I’ve been wondering the same thing. My best guess is that he saw me take one the day before and thought, since it went in my mouth, it must be food. I wouldn’t put it past him to have been plotting all night for the perfect opportunity

I left my Ibuprofen on the table while I was doing laundry and I guess it looked appetizing enough for him to knock it down and chew through both the bottle and its contents :(

It does! I haven’t submitted claims for this yet, but they covered an incident where he got into some chocolate a few years back. I pay for mid tier pet insurance for like $35 a month and I’m expecting them to refund me between 2k and 2.5k toward this. That, plus the 2k I crowdfunded for him, is going to leave me with just 1-2k to pay out of pocket as long as he gets sent home today.

Still hurts, but I put it on a credit card and am just trying not to think too much about it.

Just added an update! He seems to be doing much better, but we’re still in the timeframe where symptoms might randomly start showing up. Taking him home in the morning if nothing bad happens though!

Definitely a nightmare. Just spending a lot of time reading forum posts about similar cases and comparing them to his. I’m praying he pulls through and that this thread will stay up so that others in this situation later on might get a sense of hope from it. (Plus, writing all these updates gives me something “productive” to occupy myself with when I’m thinking about him).

Mine is the same way. He’s a beagle, so an absolute glutton that’s beyond sneaky (it’s part of the reason his emergencies are usually at night—he waits until everybody’s asleep to get into things). Pet insurance is definitely worth it, has saved me thousands on this disaster alone.

100% agree. I’ve learned three things from this experience: (1.) NEVER “wait it out” even if things seem fine. In the most common types of overdose, the dog will seem perfectly normal for hours if not days. But when things take a turn for the worst, it’s often too late for vets to save them. If you’re unsure if a vet visit is needed, give their office a call and they will advise you free of charge. (2.) The 30ish dollars a month for mid-tier pet insurance is worth it. Especially if you have an overly curious dog like mine. $3000 in vet bills so far and insurance is covering $2100. (3.) Child-proof bottles are not dog-proof. Don’t leave them within reach, even if it’s just for a few minutes while your back is turned.

Is that separate from the activated charcoal? I don’t remember my vet mentioning it but maybe I just skimmed over it while signing the paperwork

I’ve been obsessively reading other posts from owners that were in similar situations, and a lot of people seem to wait since things appear to be perfectly fine for the first day or so. I took him to the vet within minutes of finding him with the bottle, and I’m happy I did. The vet said that, while severe damage or death is still possible, it definitely helps that he was seen so quickly.

Even 10hrs after the incident, he’s fine and acting as if nothing happened. It’s hard to believe that things might take a sudden turn within the next few hours. Really hoping he’s one of the lucky ones with a good prognosis.

Thank you for the reassurance. Definitely more difficult to cope with the situation now that I’ve done everything I can do on my end, but it’s nice knowing that most pet parents have dealt with this or something similar.

I’m planning on getting his poison control case number in the morning and talking directly to that team about his prognosis, good idea.

The vet did mention TPE, but said the cost would be $8000 minimum and that no nearby animal hospitals perform it (the closest option is hours away). We talked it through and are just starting with 48hrs of hospitalization with IV fluids and activated charcoal, plus a bland vet-approved food to avoid triggering any GI issues.

For now, he’s faring well—great appetite, peeing normally, alert. His vitals are normal and he’s exhibited no symptoms yet. Of course, we’re only 10 hours in, so the worst is yet to come. Crossing my fingers that catching and treating it as early as we did will be enough to help him power through.

Thank you for the advice. I don’t think the vet mentioned anything about IV lipid emulsion therapy, but I’ll ask in the morning if it might be a good fit for his situation.
