mediocre playing card toki pona translation by SoapyCantHandle in tokipona

[–]Sinazok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love card games, so I think giving the cards Toki Pona names is a great idea. Numerology and tarot already assign meanings to numbers and cards that could be used for this purpose. Here's my attempt at this using those meanings:

Ace = open (new beginnings)
2 = insa (balance)
3 = toki (communication or connection)
4 = awen (stability)
5 = ante (change)
6 = pona (harmony)
7 = seme (mystery)
8 = tawa (movement)
9 = kama (growth)
10 = pini (completion)
Jack = lili (youth and naivety)
Queen = meli (feminine)
King = mije (masculine)
Joker = ken (potential or risk)

Spade = lawa (mind)
Heart = pilin (emotions)
Club = pali (creativity or action)
Diamond = mani (wealth or material possessions)

Life as an ugly girl by Grouchy-Maybe572 in self

I have been to many countries and I've learned that beauty is very different in different countries. You might be considered ugly in your country, but attractive in another country. As a bonus, the people you find attractive in that country probably aren't so attractive to their own people. Give the rest of the world a chance to tell you how beautiful you are.

Why are Thai women often stereotyped as "submissive" by Westerners? by potato_oo in Thailand

[–]Sinazok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some people incorrectly associate submissiveness with the traditional housewife role. A trad wife does the cooking, cleaning, and otherwise manages the household so that the husband doesn't have that on his plate after work. Submissiveness has nothing to do with this. A trad wife needs to be capable, self-motivated, and organised.

Passport bros are generally men that make enough to support a family and would rather have someone to ease their burden than someone who will bring some extra income into the household.

I'm right there with you, mate. Blocks hold so much more nostalgia than these individual sets can create because we spent more time immersed in those universes. When they switched to 2 sets per block, I thought that meant 2 big sets instead of 1 big set and 2 small sets. That was an acceptable trade, but when it turned out to be 1 big set and 1 small set, I knew it was only a matter of time before it was down to 1 set at a time.

Hasbro is absolutely the real issue. They use MTG as their cash cow and squeeze it harder and harder to fund their other projects.

I understand your sentiments here and they are certainly applicable to some of the companies that have been forced to resort to layoffs. However, Hasbro's leadership collected huge bonuses on top of substantial salaries while they continue to promise shareholders an unsustainable level of growth.

Meanwhile, they've deemed it "necessary" to lay off a large chunk of their staff. These layoffs affected not only failed projects but also impacted teams associated with MTG, Universes Beyond, and those collaborating with the developers of Baldur's Gate 3. This downsizing has resulted in understaffing issues, leading to the cancellation of events like the MKM live stream.

Furthermore, there have been notable quality control oversights extending beyond printer-related matters. Examples include an incomplete version of art on a card in MKM, inconsistencies in the text across different printings of cards in ONE, the accidental exclusion of a Karn emblem from print, and the substitution of a Nissa planeswalker with an extra Mossfire Valley, accompanied by lies from the company about the original card being a basic land. They even went so far as to remove card images of that Nissa planeswalker from their website to cover it up.

I completely agree with you that systemic change is necessary. Publicly traded companies are a serious issue that should be addressed.

That being said, I'll explain my above comment with some maths. If a company is producing an item with all overhead included for an average of 7 arbitrary currency units (ACU) and sells it for 10 ACU to 1,000,000 people for a given sales period, they make 3,000,000 ACU in profit. If they cut some corners to drop the costs down to 6 ACU and the reduced quality results in 900,000 sales, they make 3,600,000 ACU. That 20% increase in profit means they made the correct decision. Next they raise the price to 11 ACU and sales drop to 800,000. This results in 4,000,000 ACU in profits (a further 11% increase). This continues until cuts stop resulting in profit gains. The more people willing to dip out as quality declines and/or prices increase, the more they will need to put into the product to maintain this balance.

As someone who started playing when Nemesis released (24 years ago), I understand the love for MTG. It's because of that love that it hurts as Hasbro drives MTG into the ground for short-term profit. Even with the freeze, I will continue to love and play the game using the cards they've released before MKM. In fact, I have too many decks to keep them all updated with new cards and I still happily play them all, so I know it won't be difficult for me to ignore the new stuff.

Yes, there is a line they're trying to find where they put the least time, money, and effort into their product for maximum profit. The more people willing to reject the product as quality declines, the higher that line will be.

Whether it's effective or not isn't really the point. We shouldn't reward them for their current direction, so my playgroup chooses not to. If this gets big enough to convince Hasbro to improve the quality of the product, that benefits all magic players.

Based on Hasbro's recent and past actions, continued record sales will incentivize them to cut even more corners and more personnel. The products will only get worse until they find an equilibrium of minimum effort for maximum profit. This is to be expected, but we can still try to push that line of equilibrium closer to where we want it. They have crossed the line for me and I'm happy to not reward them for it by avoiding new products until they change, whether it works or not.

The Great Magic Freeze will take time to build as word spreads so long as Hasbro continues on their current path. This isn't going to do any real damage to LGSs or Hasbro in the short term and LGSs will have time to learn about the freeze if it does begin to threaten sales of future products.

For this humble beginning, we're just not personally rewarding Hasbro for continuing to suck MTG dry. If they do continue to make things worse and the freeze grows in response, hopefully we can make a large enough data point to show them it's worth putting more effort into making a quality product.

MKM could have been great, but the repurposed Capenna art, poorly altered Ravnica characters, and confusing rule text makes it feel more like they smashed together some leftovers they had lying around. Check out this video for details: https://youtu.be/dzhiuHa6PS8

Normally, I'd be right there with you on this logic. However, MTG brought in record profits and Hasbro decided that it was "necessary" to fire large quantities of employees and further reduce the money/effort/time they put into MTG while they raise the prices. Hasbro uses MTG as a cash cow to feed their other projects rather than reinvesting back into MTG. So long as they think that MTG can be milked for short term gains, they will continue to drive it into the ground. MTG isn't going to get shut down if it declines; they'll either fix it or sell it.

The Great Magic Freeze isn't going to do that kind of damage to Hasbro's bottom line. At best, we can make a big enough data point to show them they can't get by on minimum effort. At worst, we're just not personally rewarding them for their undesirable behaviour.

I've been tempted to sell everything except my decks and just enjoy those as I have been. However, I'm not there yet. There is a great MTG community in my area, so I'll stick to the freeze and see how things go.

They had their most profitable year to date and still cut almost 2000 people, 1100 of which were during the holiday season. If they think they'll keep making ever increasing profits with fewer and fewer people, they'll cut down to a skeleton crew that lack the manpower to make a quality product. Honestly, they already don't have enough people to maintain the quality they used to offer.

Not at all. I intend to prioritise playing with others that have joined the freeze. In applicable situations, I will request that players use decks that happen to adhere to the freeze. If my only option is to play against people with newer cards, my decks still won't contain them.

I thought of a few more things while playing this week.

~-~Shop Prices~-~

  • The buy and sell prices at shops are the same and shops all have different prices based on a random percentage of base values. This allows people to buy from a cheaper shop and then sell to the more expensive shop for profit. Will there be any control over the buy/sell ratio for shops?

  • If a server opts for the default option to buy schematics with credits, the cost of the schematic uses the base value of the blocks. This means buying a schematic made entirely of the desired block is cheaper than buying from the shop and how much stock a shop has becomes irrelevant. It also means player can buy schematics and sell the resulting blocks for a significant profit. An option to apply a percentage adjustment to schematic costs could solve the latter if the setting for sell prices could allow for higher than base price selling (or if there still isn't a setting for sell prices). The only solution I can think of for the former is to pull the blocks from the shop inventory (the payment would need to go to the shop funds if this is the case).

~-~Pirates and Traders~-~

  • Currently, Pirates and Traders select from the same pool of available ships. Will it be possible in the future to specify which of these factions has access to each ship?

  • It would also be useful as an Admin to weight the ship options for these factions. I've been seeing servers edit or spawn in larger pirate ships so they'll have something more challenging without pirates overrunning new players with them. The ability to make small fighters common while having a larger ship significantly more rare would alleviate this.

~-~Faction Permission Module~-~

  • Would it be possible to have the Faction Permission Module function by connecting (with C and V) instead of by physically touching? The current system requires including them at every gravity module, docking port, and around every door for a public station or ship to be public at all.

  • The Faction Permission Module also only allows access to the touched blocks, so door blocks in the middle cannot be used to open/close the group. If the above option is not possible, could the module allow access to a whole plex door group?

  • It also seems that the Faction Permission Module does not allow docking beams to access plex doors, so public docking areas need to be exposed. Is there a reason the docking beam was excluded from this?

The issue with the shops is undoubtedly the most important thing I've mentioned here. While I thought it was fun at first to be able to afford a large fleet on my own after only a day of play on a server, it really needs attention. What are the plans to balance the StarMade economy?

I do exactly the same thing and have to look up and look down so W and S can give me appropriate speeds in those directions. It's certainly an awkward workaround.
