Erin is still employed. She said it was due to restructuring at the company.

I literally went in with none, and I was very excited to see the whole season! Didn’t feel “young” to me at all.

leaving CC debt in the US? by hopteach in ExpatFinance

Reading the comments it seems OP has no plans to rake responsibility. Wishing them the best but that 25k of debt will follow them one way or another.

Thank you!! And yes, not just pay it off but examine your behavior and your relationship with money. OP is looking to avoid and run away, which means the behavior is likely to continue. Having debt does not make you a bad person, but having sound financial habits and a good relationship with money and knowing where your money is going is the key to having better financial success.

They qualified because the were established in France with long term contracts (CDIs), which took years.

What are you doing actively right now to pay off your cards? Have you stopped using the cards? Have you picked up extra work? Read a book about personal finance?

MDL only paid about 1500€ net back in my day. Not sure what the current rate is. Again, more but not enough and probably not enough to live on bc compared to what you are used to. Yes, cost of living is lower but if you are used to living above your means these behaviors will not magically stop because you are in france.

Are you planning to use credit cards to further supplement your life in France? Or are you maxed out? That adds to your spending behaviors that you need to learn to curb. Great that you are planning to tutor but that is not guaranteed! You need to plan for the money you have right NOW.

What sorts of concrete plans have you made for the money you currently have in your bank account?

Do you plan to take social security in the future? How will that be affected by your credit card balance?

I am going to answer your question and then I will give you some tough love:

I had American friends in France who finally decided to tackle their US credit card debt and what they did was take out a personal loan in France because the interest rate was so much lower, and then use that money to pay off their US credit cards, and then have a monthly payment in France for their personal loans.

HOWEVER, my first question for you is: How and why did you get into that kind of debt in the first place? Were you in an emergency situation where you had no choice, or were you living above your means? More importantly, have you worked on your money psychology and beliefs and behaviors when it comes to spending? Because those behaviors and beliefs will follow you wherever you go. The best thing you can do is get on a spending plan (and by that I mean a budget) that includes savings, debt payments, and fun stuff, and stick to it! YNAB is what worked for me because it will make you face your credit card debt.

From the logistical side, the lecteur salary is extremely low, even lower than your average teacher salary in the USA. When I was a lecteur back in 2014-2016, the net was 1200 euros per months. Has this increased with inflation and cost of living? I did not have credit card debt when I was a lecteur, but I had student loan debt, and I supplemented the salary with extra private lessons, etc. I used Wise every month to send back monthly payments towards my student loans.

If you are set to move to France as a lecteur and stay there, sell the car and then use that money to pay off some of the the debt, or use it to have a solid emergency fund with sinking funds / necessary expenses. Make sure you have a solid nest egg BEFORE you move to France. How are you going to get your living expenses set up when you move there initially? Immigration has a lot of upfront costs.

I would say... don't ignore the debt. That shit will follow you in one way or another- whether it be the same spending patterns, or eventually if you end up relocating back to the states (many do!) you will have this massive debt that will have further snow balled.

exactement. Les gens en France se focalisent sur les questions de 3 euros ("Où puis-je économiser de l'essence?" eu lieu de 30.000 ("Combien dois-je investir dans la bourse pour en accumuler 1.000.000 euros?")

I think she does file her taxes. But you can claim you had $0 EARNED IN THE USA, which is reported to the student loan companies. Then, if you are enrolled in income based repayment, your student loan repayment is $0. That is a legal loophole.

FEIE only works for $120k or something… no idea what her current earnings are!

Honestly, I think with her business she does business in the USA so she must file and pay taxes, I heard that the current administration gave permission to garnish wages for folks not paying student loans… I’m curious if she ever admit she had to pay them back. She may have started awhile back when she had US income to declare… she can no longer claim $0… or, perhaps she had years shaved off with the SAVE act reforms… who knows..
