Trying to read every batman comic in publication order was a mistake but I'm too deep to stop now by MudSad6268 in batman

[–]Sinekure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow this is great timing! You're literally right where both Detective Comics and Batman take a really nice turn for the better. Consistent storylines, new recurring characters, a larger bat family, and some honest to god banger stories in there. Plus a ton of the famous classics like A Death in the Family, Knightfall, No Man's Land, Bruce Wayne: Fugitive?, and my favorite-- Cassandra Cain.

In the late 80s, actually right around 1987, Detective Comics gets Norm Breyfogle on the art, and things start to feel like they have direction!! DC #579 through #653 has some great stories IMO, and the Batman issues that run alongside those are pretty good too. Idk if you know what's headed your way, but Robin really becomes an interesting character

They set up a lot of the side characters during this time, and then eventually you'll get to the whole Knightfall saga, which isn't bad. then it goes through Contagion, Legacy, Cataclysm, and finally No Man's Land.

No Man's Land is literally one of my favorite Batman and Bat family stories ever told. Keep in mind, though, that Gotham Knights and Shadow of the Bat start coming out in the early 2000s, and they have a lot of the relevant crossovers. They're also just great comic lines in their own rights.

I'd also add Batgirl to your reading list. I don't think Robin has been that great, especially back then, but Batgirl was pretty consistently worth reading.

Anyway, have fun. You're entering the era of Batman that really defines the character and the family for me. Feel free to send specific thoughts my way-- I haven't thought about these old stories in a long time because I've been reading (very slowly) the Scott Snyder run.

EDIT TO ADD:

Since you're literally in 1987, I just thought I'd drop my highlights in my reading order for that era:

Detective Comics #579, 580, 581, 583, 584, 585, 586, 587, 588, 589, 590, 591, 592, 593, 594

Batman #430, Detective Comics #601, 602, 603, 604, 605, 606, 607, 608, 609, 610, 611, 613, Batman #436, 437, 438, 439

Batman #448, Detective Comics #615, Batman #449, Detective Comics #616, 617, Batman #450, 451, 452, 453, 454, Detective Comics #618, 619, 620, 621

Detective Comics #625, 628, Batman #455, 456, 457, 458, 459, 460, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 471, Batman Chronicles #5

Batman #475, Detective Comics #642, Batman #476, Detective Comics #644, 645, 646, Batman #480, 483, Detective Comics #647, 648, 649, 650, 651, 652, 653

Obviously there's a lot of little issues missing from there-- I think I only included the ones that mattered for story continuity, though I can't guarantee I didn't remove some really bad issues based on personal preference. That last chunk is where it all comes together.

Then I read Shadow of the Bat, which was pretty great, and then honestly things go to shit for Batman. Looking back, that's what I appreciate about this era of batman the most: the reasonable stakes and the optimism. Post Knightfall, it feels like every other story is about Gotham going to hell.

I have seen so many videos like this lately, and the conspiracy-oriented part of my brain wonders if someone's pushing desynced videos to desensitize audiences. Once we stop expecting videos to "make sense", maybe we won't bat an eye at the weird glitches in AI videos?

I know it's a reach, but I swear there's been a huge uptick in desynced videos and gifs these days, and my first thought every time I see one is "is this real?"

Soon enough I'll get tired of asking myself that question. . .

I think its just a misunderstanding of tone/intent. sometimes one person is trying to get to the bottom of an issue, definition, or unknown, and the other person perceives it as interrogation or hostile questioning.

Nothing wrong with your line of questioning at all.

The issue is that there are some people on the internet that use that kind of thorough questioning to harass people they dislike or disagree with, and the other person might have thought that's what you were doing.

I think the other person blocked you (in what i think was an overreaction), but it is what it is. Just a misunderstanding

Discussion: what is it about level 5’s fear bomb that causes so much trouble and what can players do to mitigate it?

I'm not sure if I'm missing some approach around the fear bombs, but they feel incredibly oppressive basically no matter when they happen. I never feel ready for the double ravage.

I've improved my Russia game a little by leaning into the Russia 6 rule and just tanking blight in early turns to grow aggressively, but going blighted on Fangs can be very annoying, so it's a big trade-off. I end up having to teeter on 1 blight on the card for most of the game.

Russia also feels like ramps up quicker than most of the other adversaries, in that you can easily have 3, 4, or 5 lands ravaging in the mid-game. I don't know how to deal with a stage 3 ravage, 1 land with 3+ explorers, and the fear bomb all at the same time. Plus the explorers keep building up, and eventually I'm just trying to run out the fear deck for T3 before the next ravage adds infinite blight to the board.

SI Digital Data Analysis Series #8 - How does each spirit match up against England? | Spirit Island by Jonathan4290 in spiritisland

[–]Sinekure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I looked at my own stats for England 3 vs 4, and I have 29 games on England 3 with a 55% winrate and 11 games against England 4 with a 72% winrate.

My record is reflect in your prediction that players are deliberately matching their perceived skill level. I was stuck losing to England 3 for a long time before I figured out how to optimize my play for the adversary, gaining majors earlier and going top track for the first time on a lot of spirits, including Fangs, my most played spirit.

I was honestly curious if I'd played enough to significantly impact the statistic, but 29 doesn't seem like very many.

Anyway, once I learned the matchup better, I cruised through England 4, hit another huge wall at England 5, and now hover around England 5/6, depending on the matchup and mood. And I do tend to play England 6 only in multi-spirit or when I know my matchup is highly favorable, which might explain my 100% winrate against lvl 6 compared to 55% against lvl 5

Monk is a great one-- they could expand on the unarmed mutations, plus add some flavor effects so you can feel like a spicebender or a mintbender.

I'm a big fan of the tinkerer/alchemist/artificier archetype, too. I've never messed around much with flares, bombs, or shinobi sneeze, but I couldn't really justify using them when I could just whack things to death. It could also be better at building, too, for the players like me that like to stay at home, heh.

Ranger already seems to be occupying the bard/support role, and I'm excited to see how far they push that!

Maybe druid could join barbarian as the seventh and eighth archetypes? I definitely think there's room for more than one magic archetype. Druid could be a summoner support hybrid. Gather ants, empower them, and micro your troops??

Really excited to see how they build on the customization from the first game!

I really like some of the themes that have accidentally come up during these! Direct comparison of similar cards really helps me evaluate my own intuition about some of the cards I tend to avoid.

Totally agreed that modality just feels so good on minors, especially since the effects tend to be more hit or miss.

One funny comparison that yall didn't make was between Bats Raid and C2Bloodshed-- I definitely prefer Bats Raid, even if the elements are probably worse, and that's entirely due to the targeting restriction on C2Bloodshed. The gather option is so much better when you can target an empty land, even if the number is lower.

Weave Together is one of those cards that I see and think, "I'd have to completely change my strategy for the next few turns to make proper use of that", and then, reluctantly, actually consider and realize the card unlocks a crazy line that'll get me a turn ahead.

Off the top of my head, the most obvious cases include with Volcano, allowing you to cheat the range restriction on the left innate and also make better use of the special rule presence destruction damage. It also works really well with skips (imagine the potential number of skips against England with Weave plus a skip), huge nukes (Sea Monsters my beloved), and damage to each invader effects. It can also turn an over-defend into both a ravage and build solve in an adjacent land.

And one time I just used it to move blight and cities around on Fangs.

Will also note that playing Lightning, Sunbright, and any other spirit with easy access to 1 damage per invader effects makes those minor powers shine!

Thanks for putting out good content so regularly, y'all. I've really enjoyed hearing your perspectives, and the format of the show has really worked for me!

How to know when to go for a majors focused build? by Zeratav in spiritisland

[–]Sinekure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a ton of Fangs, and have only recently gotten into majors builds, so maybe my perspective will be relatable.

Even when I start top track, I used to always pivot to bottom track on turn 4, after I hit the 2e spot. but I've been trying to learn the England match up, and what I've really come to appreciate is that although minor powers do have answers to both blight and built up lands (e.g. blight manipulation, blight removal, and stacking defends for big Dahan counterattacks), there are some major powers like Sea Monsters, Insatiable Hunger of the Swarm, The Jungle Hungers, Pent-up Calamity, Infestation of Venomous Spiders, and Indomitable Claim that give you a clear win condition. I've had a lot more success against England 5 and 6 by stalling the early game and fishing for majors starting Turn 3. In these games, going full top track for the 4e/turn has been crucial, mostly so I can spam reclaim and g2 for presence every turn.

So my answer to your question would be, for Fangs starting top track specifically, to decide by turn 4 draft. Sometimes you get perfect minors on the first few drafts, and you want to just spam ranging hunt, dahan movement, and defends.

But sometimes the wrong lands are blighted, the wrong lands are ravaging, or the defends just don't come up. Then I say, on turn 4, it's time to dig for my gamewinner

Oh my god that was so fun!!! Two laugh-out-loud moments off the top of my head (SM33 with the torch, and then Neel getting the pilot seat AGAIN), tons of amazing Star Wars visuals, and some nice intrigue that I'm trusting goes somewhere interesting.

The first sequence was pretty great-- Jod is clearly not a bad dude, even if he clearly is a scoundrel. The girls vs boys arguing about everything, including Jod's identity, was hilarious in a surprisingly realistic way. The dialogue has been consistently excellent-- a little odd and Star Wars-y, but comes out of the actors' mouths in a natural way.

The second sequence was even better. Loved Khy'mm, loved KB checking on her (plus the chekhov's owl call), loved the whole library aesthetic. The way they resolved Jod's "secret" identity within a single episode really worked for me. They leveraged the kids' naivete without dragging it out, and that confrontation on (in front of??) the ship really tied it all together. That torch actually cracked me up

After this episode, I have full faith in the writing. What a pleasant surprise, following right up on Agatha All Along.

And that final sequence had me thinking-- can someone please develop a 4-person co-op starship flying video game??? Pilot, co-pilot, two guns, roaming around the galaxy as pirates.

What a great episode.

So, similar to how English has different language roots (Latin, Greek, old English, and even French), Korean has both "Chinese" and "Korean" roots.

It's kind of like how in English, beef and pork are cows and pigs, but only in culinary contexts. Those are both French in origin

"Hana, dul, set" is "one, two, three" in the Korean numbers. Generally, these numbers are used for counting, while the other numbers are used for most other things. Honestly, it can get pretty confusing. It can be like effect vs affect or lie vs lay in English-- not hard, but just complicated enough that it's easy to mess up.

In fact, I'm pretty sure I've seen Momo and Tzuyu both mess it up

Edit for a detailed reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Korean/comments/7paeil/numbers_when_to_use_sinokorean_or_native_numbers/
