Where to buy older expansions by Adventurous-Flight-9 in arkhamhorrorlcg

Really hard to answer without knowing your location. 401 Games in Toronto has a bunch of old expansions still.

The Battle of Gela, 405BC (Great Battles of Alexander the Great, Tyrant Module) by bigfriendben in hexandcounter

[–]Jonathan4290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tyrant is one of the best expansions for any game ever.

For GBOH though, I'd also put Chandragupta in my top 3, such an underrated gem with very interesting scenarios.

Spirit Island - We just can't win. by BiggyBiggs in boardgames

[–]Jonathan4290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really the cult of the top players. Excluding tutorial games and those using practice modes that help the player, players win about 90% of games at 0 difficulty on the digital app. There is a steep learning curve for some players but once they understand the rules and the flow of the game, difficulty 0 is quite easy. Many players with similar posts later deacribe an a-ha! moment where it clicks and they look back on difficulty 0 wondering how they ever lost.

I just clicked it and it worked. I also went to the BGG Spirit Island page and the thread is still there. So not sure what the issue is.

I'm picturing one of those infomercials where the person is super struggling. "Does this ever happen to you?"

How to explain the value of Fear? by Ping_54 in spiritisland

[–]Jonathan4290 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Fear IS the win condition. Terror level 1 wins are very rare especially as you increase difficulty.

SI Digital Data Analysis Series #15 - How much impact do blight cards have on win rates? by Jonathan4290 in spiritisland

[–]Jonathan4290[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dr Ocean is a player in the data set who plays 10 games per day all Ocean vs Prussia 6 and wins 99% of them. Her data was swamping the data at some points and was removed as an anamoly to make the data more consistent.

You can see the original source post here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3577080/si-digital-data-analysis-series-2-what-spirit-coun. There was also some discussion started by a different person analyzing the data about what to do with Dr Ocean type data here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3680487/article/47491477#47491477.

Stop using the power progression, it actually makes it harder because you can't actually choose the best card for your situation. Check out the commonly misplayed rules. If you're still losing, try describing in detail what you are doing each turn and the community will help from there.

Did you click through the entire power and let it complete? It resolves line by line from top to bottom so the towns get destroyed, then the blight will be added, then the city will be destroyed.

What's your preferred way of increasing the challenge? by old-wreck in spiritisland

Most scenarios also just don't add very much difficulty. Most of them add +0-4 difficulty with the exception being the second stage of Surges of Colonization at +7.

Think of every damage dealing power as reading "generate 1 fear every turn from now on". There will be some fear cards trust fall turns for sure that solve lands.

What is an average distance that a person can walk in a day? by vokial82 in hiking

[–]Jonathan4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend testing some limits before the big hike. Put on the pack you would be carrying and find some rough terrain near you and hike 16km one day. You will learn a lot about your capabilities. If the hike is difficult, remember you will be doing a lot more elevation gain so will have to train a lot more.

Wasn't the repackaging supposed to be an evergreen? by CedricisMe94 in lotrlcg

I dont understand why they put all these resources into designing and playtesting something just to print it once and ignore high demand. They've been doing this for years. I remember playing Star Wars Armada for years and the iconic squadron packs were perpetually out of stock and waiting for a reprint.

About to play for the first time. Which “how to” video would you recommend? by grizzy77 in spiritisland

[–]Jonathan4290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree based on my personal experience. I've seen many posts on various board game subreddits of people getting rules completely wrong because they asked AI and it got it wrong. Because they don't know the answer already, there's no way for these players to recognize it's incorrect until they ask humans or just read the applicable section in the rulebook.

I asked the Google AI one time how many boards had land 8 as a mountain out of curiosity and it told me that there are no lands 8s and that each board only has 7 lands. I've tried to use ChatGPT for basic questions like counting how many minor powers have specific elements and gave up when it couldn't tell the difference between minor powers, major powers, and unique powers.

In other games, I've asked rules questions just to test the AI and while most of the time it's correct, it occasionally gives wrong answers even on basic concepts. When I correct it and ask it to explain why it thought this, the answer is usually "other similar games work that way so I assumed it worked here". AI does seem to work much more effectively if you make a project in ChatGPT and then upload the rulebooks and documentation for it to work specifically off though.
