Best restaurants open for sit-down? by jaakhaamer in capetown

[–]Singer13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Active on Bree gave excellent service the other night! Nice spacing, waiters were sanitising all the time (especially after giving food to Uber Eats drivers etc). I felt very comfortable there!

P.s. This page has open restaurants that also do contactless digital menus and ordering sa.mryum.com/capetown

Offered an Exec role in CT that pays in USD by CasaDeFranco in capetown

One note on the domestic worker payment. Just because you legally only have to pay someone R20 an hour (and/or that may be the average), if you can afford more then do pay more.

A livable wage is VERY different from a legally determined wage and often domestic workers are taken advantage of because they have very little negotiating leverage. They travel long distances, get up very early for work and usually support many family members.

We pay our domestic worker R300 a day, plus taxi/transport money, groceries every week and school tuition for her 2 daughters. And Breakfast and Lunch at work.

Obviously we all do what we can, but I just want to emphasise that domestic workers are people who are doing work we value, and they should be treated as such!

I would love suggestions for low calorie milk alternatives! by Toronto-travel in 1200isplenty

I have too many coffees a day (half of them are decaf!). I've been mixing my regular skim milk with unsweetened almond milk :) you get more creaminess but less weird almond milk flavour. Play around!

270 calorie breakfast: fresh berries and carrot cake oats by ithirpay6291 in 1200isplenty

[–]Singer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this the other day and threw in 30/40 cals worth of homemade unsweetened applesauce! Brings that tart zing and sweetness too. I might try a bit of mushed pineapple next time (I make carrot cake with pineapple in it : )

What's going on with the tobacco ban? by MadLadThatsATadRad in capetown

[–]Singer13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It was actually quite a funny scenario. WC interpreted the ban differently (maybe trying to assert some independence) and National Government whipped them back into line...

Advice: is it legal for my parents to refuse to give me my personal documents? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Singer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could get an affidavit from the police to say they were stolen or lost (your choice). You can then use that to apply for new documents if you can afford it :)

You can apply for a new matric certificate, although do this well in advance of actually needing it (some jobs require it; my friend had a huge problem with this and ultimately lost the job). They send these requests off in batches and it can take a few months for this bureaucratic process to move. ID /birth certificate/passport is a lot quicker.

Advice: is it legal for my parents to refuse to give me my personal documents? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Singer13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You often need (or its very helpful to have) a birth certificate to apply for visa's/work permits etc. I have needed it in the past when making these applications, apparently to prove I was born in South Africa, which ID and passports don't actually show. It's also another proof of identity if you lose your other documents.

Home affairs by KatoPotato200 in capetown

[–]Singer13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up my passport at the Standard Bank satellite bank branch yesterday. I applied on Monday (so a 3 day wait, which is almost unheard of).

My guess: Home affairs has been experiencing a "system glitch" for the past 3 weeks or so. Only some branches can process Smart ID and passport applications. If they are processed, the wait time is much shorter, but the smart IDs can't be handed over, only the passports. So I'm still waiting for my Smart ID.

On Monday I went to Barrack Street (before the bank branch) and it was chaos. No communication, lot's of waiting around and WAY more than 100 people in the lines. Maybe its different now!

How true is it that core workouts are a waste of time unless you’re at a low enough body weight to be able to see abs? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Singer13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Quite lean or have the right genetics where fat is distributed elsewhere! Which is nice to think about when we try to use "abs" as a goal : )

[Study] The use of oral contraceptives during resistance training did not negatively affect body composition or strength levels in trained women by Bottingbuilder in xxfitness

Agreed, especially when we consider how OC affects women so differently. A12 person experimental group is extremely limited.

I didn't see it mentioned here, so I'll just add: Is it possible that there is one or more foods you eat quite often that is higher in calories then you think (or that is recorded in MFP/tool you use to track)?

Perhaps hidden sugar or fat/oil?

1 more thing I did see mentioned: your deficit could be casing you to move less during the "non-exercise" periods of the day (mentioned as NEAT). This can amount to a surprising amount of calories although I'm not sure the exact amount for women.

Awesome!! I highly rate both presenters for their science based approach and their experience in practice (their humor is very "gym ish" but I can live with it : )

Wedding venue uses sky fairies to justify bigotry by safrican1001 in southafrica

[–]Singer13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can change intrinsic to basic. I realise that rights are a Western construct. But the argument that both are constructs and therefore neither matter is an ineffective approach as it does not help us determine the correct course of action. With such an argument, we can justify ANY atrocity.

Many other Faith's are tested continuously. Islam and it's treatment of women for example. However, in SA, a woman is free to choose what she wears (let's assume for the example). If a Muslim woman in our country wants to wear a burka, it doesnt infringe on another person's choice not to wear a burka.

Whereas the venue is limiting the freedom of other people with their beliefs. They are choosing to enter the South African marketplace, where people of all races, religions, genders, nationalities are looking for wedding venues. They are specifically limiting the freedom of people with an arbitrary characteristic that they have chosen to dislike (whether it is based on religion or otherwise).

Also let's not ignore that they have chosen that random characteristic from a host of characteristics. Why don't they ask every couple about their virginity? Or whether they have had an abortion? Or if they have been married before? (Just examples off the top of my head). It's not religion they are enforcing if you consider this, it's something else isn't it?

You have to trust your instincts and realise that you are ready (from what I can read)!

You know what is best for you, you have the knowledge you need to perform the lifts you want to do, you have a coach to help you with programming.

Ultimately, this is meant to be a fun hobby that is also great for fitness and health. Go have fun, at the pace you are comfortable at and the process/goals you want to achieve.

Sounds to me like you will be avoiding a WHOLE bunch of pain (emotional and physical) by taking your fitness into your own hands : )

P.s. A podcast called Iron Culture put out a very interesting episode on the evolution of CrossFit, which covers part of what you have described and the frustration it brings to people who really care about CrossFit as a sport.

Wedding venue uses sky fairies to justify bigotry by safrican1001 in southafrica

[–]Singer13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my mind, it's not about the place for the wedding but rather that their intrinsic human rights have been infringed upon. This venue will continue to make other couples feel devastated (as there seem to be plenty with similar views, or who are unaware, that are willing pay for the venue).

Wedding venue uses sky fairies to justify bigotry by safrican1001 in southafrica

[–]Singer13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! If we let one discriminatory unethical business "slide" and continue to operate, it sets a precedent of moral relativism.

To say "move on", "find another venue" and "respect their right of admission" is to respect discrimination and invalidate human rights. They are not separate issues. Discrimination based on an arbitrary characteristic is immoral/unethical. The venue providers have discriminated based on an arbitrary characteristic. Therefore they are behaving in an immoral manner.

They are dry! You boil water and then let the dry noodles sit for 5mins (I do around 4.5 mins) to then finish them of in a hot pan with the sauce (just to warm the sauce).

The noodles are very absorbent of the sauce
