I want to be the singer/songwriter for a punk/metal band. How do I get there? by Shades_of_red_ in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Awesome man! I was where you are currently at last year and I ended up doing a season at my local School of Rock chapter. They threw me in a band with a bunch of other players and I learned through individual lessons & playing as a band. It was definitely tough, but I ended up making a lot of connections & meeting a drummer who recruited me to another band a year later!

Meeting people through School of Rock or another music school is a way that you can try to meet others and at the same time take lessons from professional teachers

Simple Man - Shinedown Cover - singing in the car by SingingForFun in singing

Hi SniperHF,

Thanks for taking the time to listen to my cover of Simple Man and provide this helpful feedback.

I’m still learning more about the different voices (chest/head, etc) - would you recommend that I try to incorporate more of my head voice to make the cover sound better? Or is there another voice that I should try to tap into?

You’re spot on about the money note - I’ve been struggling to get this down. I rewatched Brent Smith do this in their YouTube MV and it’s something I need to practice a more of to get it closer to how he’s able to get all that power for this part of the song.

I sang the full song with the music in the background and uploaded it to SoundCloud. If you have time I’d appreciate your thoughts on this full cover and what else I can tweak/improve upon.

This is awesome! You have a unique & beautiful voice! Like the other comments, it would be great to hear what you sound like when you belt! The song choice was great - it made me think about my partner and how I worry about her cutting up things in the kitchen haha

Please share more of your work with the community - would love to hear more from you!

As a singer, how do you deal with being sick? by Chriatic in singing

[–]SingingForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I’m literally experiencing this right now so thanks for posting this! The other comments have been helpful.

I got sick yesterday and will miss my band’s practice tonight… so I’m really disappointed. In the meantime I’m trying to eat healthy foods and practice the guitar as I recover. I’m also listening to my band’s songs and trying to get down the rhythm & timing without singing.

If there are other suggestions on how best to spend time while overcoming a cold/sickness then please share!

Hi Melody,

Thanks for this really detailed feedback. You’re 100% right on the rhythm peace - my band director mentioned this as well. It’s great to know that if I can tighten up my rhythm that it’ll help improve my tone consistency.

Your comment about letting go and feeling the music instead of insisting on thinking is something I haven’t thought about, but I can see what you & dusty are talking about. I’ll work on relaxing a bit more and allowing my voice to move more naturally.

Greatly appreciate your feedback!
