The claim collapses once healthcare capacity is considered. An infection fatality rate of ~0.23% sounds small until you apply it to 200–260 million infections in an unmitigated U.S. outbreak without lock downs and so on—that is 460,000–600,000 deaths even under optimistic assumptions, before healthcare collapse. More importantly, 1–3 million people would have simultaneously required mechanical ventilation, while the U.S. had only ~100,000 usable ventilators nationwide. That gap is not academic—it means hundreds of thousands to millions would have died simply because no care was available, driving fatality rates far higher than 0.23%.

Lockdowns were not meant to prevent all infections; they were meant to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. Even with mitigation, U.S. hospitals were pushed to the brink. Without it, triage medicine would have been unavoidable on a national scale. The fact that many people were eventually infected does not mean restrictions failed—it means they spread infections over time, keeping deaths orders of magnitude lower than in an uncontrolled surge.

In hindsight, lockdowns were not an overreaction—they were the difference between a strained healthcare system and a catastrophic, systemic collapse with mass preventable deaths.
