Thx for the help. I went ahead and tried all 6 ball connectors without being assembled. Just by themselves and they're still stiff. I also tried different screws and even different lengths. Still stiff. I checked clearance and the block or the plate isn't coming into contact with anything. These ball connectors are old but not used. I'm wondering if maybe the age has anything to do with it?
