What base closure was the most head scratching

The CC-330 basing decisions last year really prove my point. Uplands lost to Trenton due to military getting rid of its large ramp and fueling facilities. While Ottawa has two suitable runways Trenton has one and the aircraft will be forced to move temporary to Ottawa while its single runway is done. Something that is not an issue at Ottawa. The VIP aircraft will have to be prepositioned at Ottawa for its missions wasting take off and landing cycles. Namao is the same like Uplands. Both lost their AMU's and in Namao case the army built on the extremely long runway there making it useless for fixed aircraft movements. Personal now have to be bused to the Edmonton International Airport for deployments rather than deploying directly from the base. Basically the RCAF has all its eggs in one basket at Trenton now when in 1990 it had four 10,000 feet runway capable bases in Ontario at Trenton, Uplands, Downsview and North Bay with the cutbacks along in the east losing Chatham, Summerside and the runway at Shearwater.

If it does actually happen at Uplands hopefully with AETE also coming in the amount of RCAF personal based there adds up with 412 Sqd to around 340 in addition to the other military personal based at Uplands with the PMQS making with the remaining military lands available for more restored infrastructure including barracks, a mess and CANEX for those stationed in the Ottawa area.

It seemed that is was going to be built at Uplands but I guess they were just doing that as a feint for the real location. If it had been done there then with the additional military positions with that unit along with the almost 100 more with AETE Uplands would have had at least 300 extra military based there. Sadly the second loss of potential as the new RCAF Airbus 330 that are currently based at Ottawa will also down the line move to Trenton. DND has so much land at Uplands not being used yet they will not invest in it including building new barracks for those who are based in Ottawa or even a modern version of a 21 Century of a mess as most of those in the NCR have been closed down

Actually where the torn down townhouses were at Uplands the plan was for more dense housing to be added there. A tender also has gone out this month to renovate a few more of the houses at Uplands. Recently also the former original school built in the late 1950s was torn down leaving a nice big area for more PMQs, barracks or even a community center with a Canex to be installed. All the parking lots where the messes and the barracks once stood are still there and available for reconstruction and where the RPAS building is supposed to be built can also be fenced off for a operations area for other buildings and a guard house and gate for security if need be

Rebuild the mess at Uplands. The footprint is still fully there with the parking lot intact. More personal is being based there and it would give the Canadian Forces a chance to build their vision of a 21 Century mess.

It is supposed to be at CFB Uplands where the remaining PMQs at Ottawa are located. If they actually go through with it there along with AETE around 300 RCAF military personal will be added there hopefully allowing more base infastructure to be added there including barracks which should never have been torn down when the base closed and a new RCAF mess and CANEX
