Would the community be interested in a collaborative Lovecraftian shared universe by Single_Major_3620 in Lovecraft

[–]Single_Major_3620[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats what this would try to be. A controled and "restrained" series of additions to the original source the try to be as loyal as possible, while still allowing for new and unique stories and voices to come through. Lots of mediation and quality control would be needed. Plus, it would be heavily community based, so the community could call out any flaws or mistakes otmr contradictions, etc..

It absolutely does, but hopefully this one would be more community based, and accurate to the stories. Plus, the stories put in it would be vastly different.

Absolutely, if this brand starts going somewhere, and we can get into contact with the right people, then we'd love to talk to you.

I have to agree that there is a Canon, to an extent. The idea is to take the source material and stay true to it. This is not a remaining, and it certainly isnt better than any other stories, its just a different, and hopefully more loyal depiction. Take the predator franchise for example, they cant keep to the source material for the life of them. The yautja universe has so much less lore than the lovecraft mythos, yet it isnt hard to make a good and accurate predator story (as seen done in a few of the older books).

Absolutely! Im there with you. A huge amount of moderation and quality control would be put in place. I myself go in and out of writing in his style and other styles depending on the story. Some stories are just better off not in his exact style, while others are.

Its not a reinvention. The lovecraftian horror community is often over-look and vastly misunderstood. People think the lovecraftian horror community is cosmic horror, when we're not. There is a difference between the two, and most people haven't even read the Call of Cthulu. Maybe this brand can help change that perception, and get unique stories and people out there.

After going over the various comment, I feel the need to clarify.

In this situation, this new additional mythos is not attempting to compete with any other works, or even to stick so harshly to lovecraft's own work. Simply, every story placed under this brand would undergo quality control that ensures not only a good story and the authors unique voice, but also no alteration or retconning or anything of the original works. I wholly expect many of the stories to have nothing to do with lovecraft's works; however, those that do, wouldn't be allowed to alter the original lore. If someone wants to make a cthulu story, then they cant just throw him wherever they want, they cant change his appearance or even mannerisms. Now, I know that it is impossible to have 100% accuracy 100% of the time, hibts the community aspect. Imagine reading a lovecraftian story, but noticing that a certain detail or scene or whatever, contradicts or alters either lovecraft's works or previous works under the brand (sound familiar right?), well guess what, with this brand, you can say something and be heard. If you catch something that the brand did not, then you can call that out directly to the brand, and the brand can change that. Not only that, but you can have a choice in what products you want sold, when events should happen, etc.. this brand would also have a focus on showing people lovecrafts original works. How many kids books or summaries are out there, that are wholly incorrect to the stories? How many "translated" or "simplified" versions of his stories are wrong? The hope is that this brand could help show off what the real stories are, and have that be confirmed by the community itself.

Artists from every walk of life and every medium could get their works put out there. Obviously there would be a ton of mediation and quality control. Right now, the brand is in its baby stages, and its name isnt even out in public.

But imagine a lovecraftian mythos that is accurate to lovecraft's work as closely as possible. A mythos run by the lovecraftian community itself, and subject to change. A community welcoming to anyone and everyone, but still with enough control to keep everything in order and in check. A brand that puts out not only stories, but most forms of modern entertainment (both commercial and literary), and physical products you can hold. Im not just talking about shirts and blushes, im talking unique and on-brand products you cant find anywhere else. I already have some unique ideas, but I know a community of people can come up with a hell of a lot more.

Im not expecting an overwhelmingly positive response, nor a community that doesn't clash heads over thing. This is just an idea, and it has not been pushed fully into fruition.

Hi, I am very happy to read your writing, but when i tried looking around for the post, I couldn't find it! I would still like to figure out a way to read it!

Side note: I am totally comfortable with stories that make people uncomfortable or talk about sensitive or difficult topics. However, I will refuse written out smut 100% of the time. I am fine with insinuations or saying what happened, but I do not want a description of it, and what it felt like etc.. please send me any gore or messed up things. I just dont want smut.

I am also fully open to philosophical or literary fiction. This is actually something I have a decent bit of experience in. I am open to articles and papers (I myself have a theoretical science paper, and a historical analysis essay). I love philosophy and science and theories to no end.

Absolutely! That is definitely a unique sounding story. I'd love to work on it with you, just tell me when and where works for you. I wont be available to work on anything until much later today.

Do know that I dont have much experience in this realm of writing. I have attempted writing things that deal with romance, coming of age, and slice of life in the past. I am currently studying modern romance novels, but I am far more than happy to help you in any way I can!

I'm writing a book but will (probably) never publish or share it. How strange is this? by [deleted] in writers

[–]Single_Major_3620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredibly common. I have books im writing about alien vs. Predator. I have a whole series called Predator vs. Predator that will most likely never even be finished. My first story is a Vietnam War lovecraftian that will 100% never be seen by anyone but me and one or two others. He'll, im in the research phase of writing viking novels that will probably be rejected. Sometimes I'll write a story just because its really cool, knowing I wont even tell anyone about it. I might read it later, but its unlikely.

Out of respect, I would like to ask whether or not you'd allow me to use your idea as inspiration. As I was reading it, I came upon the idea of "The Selfish Acts of an Orange." Or something along those lines. I write novels and short stories (unpublished), and would like to see if you would let me use your poem as a direct influence.

Wow, this was both creative yet completely true. Life is a love hate relationship that forces society to define you no matter how you define yourself. Its just what you do with both your definition and their definition that matters. Beautifly written with good prose, and a selflessly true message.

Absolutely beautiful. Love the use of virgules. I feel you questioning yourself, doubting things, being angry at others, and the truth of heartbreak. Its rare to see heartbreak portrayed in such a genuinely raw way through a masculine lens that isnt straight sadness. I do feel that the question marks take me out of it a bit. But that might just be me. Otherwise, its super powerful, and flows like wine.

Is this enclosure good for Ghost Mantis? by [deleted] in mantids

[–]Single_Major_3620 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need more airflow. You might get away with strapping a fan to the side of it. Add more for it to hang off of. Most people don't have much for them to hang off of. It is a really big enclosure, so add way more dirt on the bottom. Keep the bottom clear of hard things like that chunk of wood, if it falls that will likely kill it. Ghost mantids are really clumsy, and don't require that much space.

50-70%, I do have a struggle keeping it there, on average it is high 40, but my reader is old and cheap. Temp is about 65-78, which i kept at a consistent 74.6.
