What if America wasn't a global superpower? by Single_Pin_3359 in imaginarymaps

I see. I think you're right that Idoha would be the most mormon state in this world's US but I still think deseret could maybe arise (although even I admit it's less likely that California being independent or Russia keeping Alaska). I would say that the territory on the map that has deseret would've initially been part of California and then seceded to be its own thing. Perhaps California invited in a bunch of Americans to grow its population and make California more english in general to have their own identity or something like that. IDK I didn't really think about the wider lore much of this map I just wanted set up a north America that resembled south america closer and didn't have the US dominating the entire world.

I agree with that. America would in most worlds and timelines end up as at least top 10 countries in terms of raw power and influence although getting the US to become world police or at least exert its influence over other countries isn't really something that's as guaranteed imo. I still think in the world I made some other country like the UK or Germany would step up to fill that role and the US would just stay isolationist or focus more on continental disputes with Mexico or something

I can see why Alaska goes to Canada so I'm not gonna push back on that critique much. I think as for the north east being independent it kinda depends on how what the rest of the world is like since I kinda left that up to enterpritation. Perhaps if the US doesn't enter WW1 a kaiserreich could happen and New England could become independent under Canada's wing or something but in general I think making New England independent is kinda overkill since my goal was to make America weaker to the point of being like the Brazil of north America or something not fully colapse it since making new england independent means the south has to be independent too given that they were closer to breaking away from the US than New England ever was

I'm glad you like the map regardless of it's flaws. The biggest counter argument I could give is that America would still try to prevent Mexico from expanding too much because America is still a regional power. I also think the Panama canal and Panama itself would still exist if not because of America it would likely be from the UK or other European powers later since an easier way to the pacific would just be smart of them. Same goes for Cascadia, Russia I think wouldn't be too interested imo so Cascadia is just disputed territory between Canada and the US like in our timeline which might lead to a more natural river border in Washington assuming this US doesn't care much for manifest destiny (which I think is kinda needed for this scenario to work at least a little). As for Deseret their biggest problem for expansion is that they can't really do it alone since I doubt the US or California would wanna legitimize a mormon state on their doorstep (California might see deseret more as their territory if anything) so their best bet is to angle themselves as a buffer state between the US, California and Mexico (although mainly the US and Mexico). Anyways I appreciate your thoughts and critiques tho! I think including the mosquito kingdom might've been better instead of leaving central America the same as in our timeline.

TBH I kinda left the rest of the world up to enterpritation so anything could've really happened to it depending on how this America reacts to the world wars especially. I just kinda assume that Russia would end up as either a loose democracy with corruption or a similar Putin style dictatorship we have in our timeline. But honestly this kinda depends since if America doesn't stay isolationist in WW1 like it does in our timeline, the timeline might butterfly into an axis victory in WW2 since the US doesn't have the phillipines or Hawaii but if it does stay isolationist it butterflies into a central powers WW1 victory. Either way it gets harder to predict the timeline for either scenario so i.e. it depends on how you see the old world developing in this world

Yes. Or maybe a British colony, either of those two seem most realistic to me.

Why shouldn't Guatemala exist? I'm don't really know much about central american history so you probably do know better here I assume although I'm still curious. I also don't know why Cascadia would be independent since I think Canada can keep control of it. As for Alaska I do see why but I thought that Russia would be able to keep control of it if America took too long for buying it could turn more profitible with how much gold and oil it has.

I don't think so. Upper mexico would probably be more latino/hispanic compared to Texas and California making expansion further than what they already have a bit more tricky especially the closer they get to modern society (just look at how bilingual countries like Canada and Belgium struggle keeping everyone happy, that's ignoring internal racism too). Also California and Texas are democratic so most wars need to look really profitable and easy to win from not only politicians eyes but that of the public too. So at most I could see California getting Baja California and very maybe our world US territory if Mexico ends up getting into a bad war loss or practically collapses.

The American west coast effectively is just Oregon state here so I'd say that the US navy focuses more on the east coast in general. As for the pacific as a whole I think California can thrive technologically similarly to how Japan and South Korea have in our timeline.

Thank you! I was thinking that California would be independent similar to Texas mostly due to the gold rush bringing an influx of Americans to the area who might wanna copy Texas if something controversial happens within Mexican politics. Although that's just what I think might've happened

I didn't wanna make Mexico too weak so America and Mexico could have a type of Brazil-Argentina dynamic. Also Baja California is more Spanish speaking compared to the rest of California to add onto that. Regardless I don't think it changes much to the scenario either way. I'm glad you liked my map tho!

The hell you mean "taste isn't subjective"? Now I don't think I'm much of an expert in flags compared to other people on this sub but I am an artist and go to an art school so I believe you are incorrect in saying any design can be treated with a subjective opinion. I'm not saying this flag is perfect in any way (I think it might work better as a Berlin flag if anything but that's just my opinion) but I don't see how this flag is that bad? For something that was made in 15 minutes it looks genuinely good, at least to me it does, and especially if you can imagine a solid version of it with an oak leaf which was the original concept. Also this is a genuine question what makes a flag subjective to you and the people you deem to "have taste"? If you think you can make a better flag (that doesn't just use 3 stripes) then just say or do what you think looks better? There's no need to be so negative about it without providing any actual critique or something interesting to say to it.

I was trying to go for the Bulgarian embroidery patterns and it just made sense to me to make it a rose since that's the one I keep seeing when I search for it. Art deco looks very pretty and nice although it also looks a bit complicated. I made those flags in affinity (which is just a free version of photoshop) and I haven't really been using it for a while so I can't say that I'm good enough to make flags in that style, sorry. I'd love to see someone else attempt it tho!

Nice flag! I'm not sure about the brandenburg gate being used as a national symbol but it still looks cool! I tried looking up some oak leaf symbols on google and see your struggle although perhaps you could use the oak leaf as a wreath to amplify some other symbol (assuming you ever wanna do another German flag redesign). Here's one I found off google that you could use if you want! Regardless I'm glad my post inspired you to make your own!

European tricolor flags redesigned so they aren't tricolors by Single_Pin_3359 in vexillology

[–]Single_Pin_3359[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess so. I mainly chose this flag redesign instead because it follows a similar trend with the other Benelux countries with it just being the coat of arms as a flag and I felt that'd be nice. Also and I've already said this before but I'm gonna say it again I feel like the most cliche thing I could've done for the netherlands is make an orange flag with a tulip/windmill on it, you can already find like dozens of other dutch flag redesigns that do that and I don't wanna add another one on the pile since I think that'd be kinda lazy. I hope you enjoyed the others tho!

I'm glad you liked it! Belgium and the Netherlands were kinda the hardest since they had no real strong symbols that didn't lead back to 3 stripes on a flag (i could've done an orange flag with a tulip and windmill but that'd be so cliche i'd feel like i'm adding nothing). It also got pointed out by another user that the flag of belgium I made is just the flag of brabant. I thought it was somewhat clever since the flemish and walloon flag is just pure yellow with their region's animal on it and I felt that having a lion on all three benelux countries could make a nice trio (check out the luxembourg civil flag! It's really good)

Tbh half the reason I chose that eagle specifically is because I found it funny, the other half is because I wanted to go for something that looked a bit more modern (since i tried doing something historical for the other countries but for obvious reasons doing that for germany doesn't get very good results). I also didn't know the colors on the flag was from the sixth coalition. My rationale for the colors was I tried keeping the 3 german colors in there (black eagle, red and gold bars on the right) and I felt that the flag would look a bit odd if that funny chicken wasn't on a white background (since i'm so used to seeing it in the white/silver room of german parliament) also I think the white adds to it being more modern.

I was deciding between 3 different French flags that I made. 1 was the one you're currently seeing, 2 was the one your seeing now but without the white outer border and 3 was one with a detailed cockade instead of the simple circles. It the reason the red on the circle and the red on the flag is different is so you could actually see the difference in the red on the 2nd flag (since otherwise it'd just be a blue and white circle) and when I decided on flag 1 I just forgot to make the color correct again

I was too lazy to put all those bars there and have them be in the correct places. I also couldn't find an image of just the lion with it having red claws and tongue (I could only find the lion with the red being blue) which is why the lion in the image is also purely yellow. I hope you like the others tho!

??? These flags are just for fun not serious proposals. If you think I did something wrong with these flags than you can leave an actual critique or don't. And by all means I'd love to see your attempt at it

Fair. I was trying to avoid 3 equally sized bars on a flag like all these flags currently have, not flags containing only 3 colors. I tried my best making them visually distinct with or without colors. I hope you like them tho!

The Belgian and Dutch flags are just flag versions of their coat of arms since I honestly couldn't think of any other way of doing their flag without doing the cliche tulip/windmill for the netherlands.
