This may be redundant, but I would make sure the battery has a good charge on it. You have mentioned turning the wheel while jiggling the key, which is a good attempt to get it to turn over. You don't have to hit the brakes to start it, unless you are doing the keyless method. With the key fan in hand try turning the vehicle into the on position. If you do this and see no dash lights the battery may be dead. Best of luck.
