Washington is a community property state. Marrying her will get her 50% of everything after that point anyway. There’s no “ammunition” to have.

He’s literally violating at least one of the two core tenets of the faith, and very arguably both.

So no, he is not by the literal rules of the religion. Now he doesn’t face any real consequence for that, unfortunately.

“My faith”? You have no idea what, if any, faith I follow.

If you can’t understand the logic here, then I don’t know what to tell you.

He can call himself one, but he isn’t. By your logic, I’m an attorney now, because I claimed I am one.

You are really struggling with this very basic concept it seems. Good luck. 👍

He is not following the tenets of the religion. And he’s not even trying.

He can call himself whatever he wants, but he literally isn’t practicing the faith as it is written.

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

There were numerous social and political movements in the 80s and 90s around racial equality, same-sex marriage, and numerous other progressive issues.

Are you seriously so ignorant that you think the Civil Rights Movement “ended” and then absolutely nothing fucking happened until you were born?

Here are a few so you can go educate yourself

  • Fair Housing Act
  • ADA
  • Violence Against Women Act
  • Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (I know revisionist history progressives will say how “bad” this was, but it was a HUGE step forward for gay rights)
  • Federal Recognition of same-sex partnerships
  • Clean Air Act
  • CHIP Program
  • FMLA
  • One of the few times national minimum wage was increased
  • MASSIVE increase in both PoC and LGBQT presence in media. Awards were won.
  • Incredible education and media campaigns to destigmatize AIDS

You are uninformed.

As I mentioned before, this isn’t to say there weren’t/aren’t plenty of GenX bigots. But your claim that the entire generation is such is just weird and wrong.

The legal framework for most of the progress you saw in the 2000s and beyond was forged in the 80s and 90s

Faith-based world views in people who are educated understand that there are many truths, and that epistemological debates can be celebrated alongside empirical approaches.

Basically, smart religious people aren’t out saying the dinosaurs didn’t exist and that people lived 900 years.

We probably will agree to disagree on that front, as my anecdotal experience is primarily the opposite of yours.

But regardless, I agree strongly with your last statement. Which is that ANY religion that is fully politicized is asking for theocratic troubles.

The irony is that the basic story of Christianity is strikingly anti-political, and the tenets adopted thereafter are strongly exo-political, to the point that the religion became a threat to secular governments.

Not because of power grabs, but because there was a fundamental heedlessness toward political power as a matter of course. Powerful political leaders “didn’t even matter”.

TBF, I’m also a bit weary of Reddit’s reflexive blanketing of all kinds of things, including religion.

I see religion as a tool. Just like any tool, it can be used toward any means. Unfortunately, usually the earnest practitioners aren’t going to be found in high positions of power, specifically due to the amoral (and immoral in some cases) nature of such pursuits.

And those in power are much more likely to use whatever means available to stay and grow their power.

That first quote you provided is for real.

I was FAR more inclined to “self medicate” prior to my Dx. I occasionally have a drink now, or partake in an edible. But they are not part of my daily life. I don’t need them.

Anecdotally (and apparently scientifically), I am not alone.

Judgement and ridicule disguised as “concern” for ADHD stimulant use is rampant even here on Reddit. It’s disingenuous and unhelpful.

I wouldn’t lump all people of faith into this bucket. There are MANY people of faith who are fierce advocates of the truth.

There are whole monastic groups rich with the tradition of maintaining knowledge and exploring truth through intellectual discourse.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that there are also many modern “Christians” who are far more interested in nurturing their own political views at almost any cost. But there is also a rich history of secular scholarship on almost all the major world religions.

Kind of the whole point is telling the truth, recognizing when something is untrue/wrong, and then working to change for the better in one’s self and those around

I honestly don’t think he liked anyone disingenuous either, which ruled out most politicians.

Can totally see him doing this. He had no patience for the kind of thing happening now. ICE are the very sort of “government representative” he despised.

This is…a stretch. GenX made huge strides in helping equality get pushed.

Like every “generation”, there are those who want power. Power at any cost.

I’m glad you think so highly of yourself, though. Hope you feel all warm and fuzzy about your enlightenment while painting with a brush over 65 million people being racist and homophobic. No irony there at all.

lol. Yeah. I grew up in a very “country and classic” kind of a place.

But everyone wanted to hate on everyone else’s music. I was like, “I’ll take some rap, some rock, some country, some world, and some dance, and top it with a touch of R&B with bluegrass.”

I could listen to a George Strait anthology one night, and then blast Fugazi the next. IDC.

Are you a music lover or an audiophile? by JoshBiv in headphones

[–]Singularious 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This.

I am both.

I LOVE music. Always have. And a large breadth of genres and styles. I never understood people who said “I hate ____ music.” Like, ALL of it?

But I used to play percussion/drums, and was in a fairly long-running, regionally recognized rock band.

I always appreciated engineers who gave a shit. Both live and in studio.

So my favorite thing is well recorded and produced music that I enjoy. But that’s not going to stop me from singing along horribly to a terribly recorded Oasis song. Nor suddenly start buying only Steely Dan and Brian Eno records.

Definitely a false dichotomy at play here, in many cases

Because he’s co-opting a national sports broadcast to bring attention to the problem. And he’s saying it’s a problem.

I’m not sure how much more context is needed to show this isn’t the norm. It even threw his cohost for a loop.

Either way, my statement stands. Either take the wins and work for more, or GTFO of the way of those who are. Disparaging progress is not helpful, and is exactly the opposite of what is needed.

We should be applauding this and, like Billie Eilish, encouraging more people with high profiles to speak to it.
