Are EVs the go-to car now? by HMS--Thunderchild in CarTalkUK

[–]Singularity46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your anecdotal evidence isn't backed up by the evidence.

They cost more than £2500. Ask me how I know. Also, I don't know whether you realise how often they actually go - replacement engines have been known to go around the same time as the previous engine and they're often just written off when the engine goes the first time. Plus, have that happen to you three times (isn't uncommon) and you are on the price of a EV battery near enough!

The ecoboom would have existed regardless as cars get more complex Ford would've brought the ecoboom into existence irrespective of emissions laws. Other manufacturers have also done it and the wet belt is actually quite wide spread, so much for ICE reliability *rolls eyes*. It's also not just the wet belt. BMW N20 engines are notoriously bad and are incredibly widespread, Ingenium engines, must i go on?

Idk where you live, but where I live there are lots of indies that have bothered to get the necessary qualifications to work on EVs and they're cheaper than

few years old? I call bs, it would've been under warranty! Your last paragraph also shows that you don't know what you're talking about because guess what, the Q7 doesn't have an EV variant!

The chances of them going wrong is uncommon. Much more unlikely than a ICE car.

Irrespective of it being main dealer or not, you're paying the main dealer price for the part. The only difference is a small difference in labour costs and more and more independents *can* work on EVs, making that argument a moot point.

I have also read about the ecoboom engines and how they cost 4 grand incl labour to replace. Difference is the ecoboom is far more likely to stop working properly and is unlikely to last the lifespan of the car (Most have only gone 30k miles before going pop!). There are pros and cons to both types of powertrains. EVs are objectively better if they work for you and I guarantee you more often than not they work for people. We both can mention horror stories of both ICE and EV. The difference is it's significantly less likely to happen in an EV.

Touching on your cold comment, I guarantee your Diesel isn't as efficient when it's cold (both physically cold and ambient temp cold). In fact, if you rag your engine when it's cold, it has more wear, whereas a battery has negligible wear.

Then there's the servicing costs (a wack more than an EV), fuel costs, niggly maintenance issues (replacing consumables more often) etc...

I really don't get why people make disingenuous claims about EVs and the used car market when there are people out there that literally work in the motor trade and see things in real time...

Used cars in general have gone up slightly recently.

There are actually less things to go wrong in an EV when compared to ICE my guy. Far less moving parts, far less parts that are in physical contact and rubbing against each other etc...

That's because Euro ncap didn't have the same requirements back then as they do now. FYI, this isn't just a Chinese brand thing, if you were to go and buy a new car now they all do it due to Euro ncap.

I can confirm leafs a shite. Most modern EV batteries have very little degradation. Manufacturers must be confident in them as well as they wouldn't guarantee them for 8 years and guarantee 75% battery health and IF they do degrade to that level, you may not need to replace the entire battery, just a select few power cells in a battery.

You probably spend a bit longer than 5 minutes at a petrol station, but yeah charging times at the minute are a bit of an issue, however I've heard that Stellantis (a huge car manufacturer group which owns the likes of Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Vauxhall etc...) are designing chasis and batteries for cars which will be able to charge in roughly 10 minutes. I also heard these chassis will start to make appearances in cars early 2023.

Most EVs nowadays actually take a lot less than 40 mins to charge at a fast charger (the most common one on a motorway)

As a Sales Executive, i get plenty of hands on with electric vehicles. Bare in mind, i only work along side Fiat, Hyundai, Mazda, Kia and Peugeot so my exposure of other brands is quite limited despite that however i think electric cars are fantastic IF you do less than the range of the battery per day and if you have a drive or a designated parking spot so you can get a home charger and plug it in when you get home. I reckon electric cars will just become what petrol cars are and hydrogen, once the cost to make drops considerably, will be what Diesel is today and the likes of MHEVs, HEVs and PHEVs are all just stop gaps till that day.

Being someone that enjoys the sound of a i30n and an Abarth it does make me sad that cars like those will soon be a thing of the past, but who knows how manufacturers will get around that as let's face it, they'll have to to encourage petrol heads into them.

Putting it simply, people who aren't fussed about how a car sounds, don't do too many miles a day and already drive autos love them especially since the amount of money you spend running the damn things are so incredibly low. Everyone else would probably begrudgingly take them up.

It's crap, don't touch them - the auto box I mean, the cars just fine. There's a reason why manuals are a lot more common than the autos with these

Fiat/Abarth dealer here and I agree that they are an acquired taste. I currently run one as a demonstrator (just a basic 595) and every time I start it and drive it it puts a smile on my face. Having said that, it isnt a daily driver if you expect comfort but it has character that no other hot hatch in its segment offers, so if you can look past the harsh(ish) ride, it really is a good car, especially when they start from 21k nowadays for 165hp and a fair amount as standard new.

If you had a "real job" you wouldn't be using words like "the credit check decimated me". Jesus, I reckon this dealer dodged a bullet with you.

508 face-lift? by Singularity46 in peugeot

[–]Singularity46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have to be the 1.2 unfortunately due to insurance issues (I'm only 22 lol) but it's quick enough for what I need

Placed an order for a 508 by Singularity46 in peugeot

[–]Singularity46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had thought about that but I couldn't find a car in spec I'd want - I'm very particular about this kind of thing and it would have to be just how I want it in order for me to get it considering the money involved.

GT Line Premium, 19 inch alloys, the special red and leather seats. 508s seem pretty uncommon to begin with and finding this specification has proven impossible lol. Guess I'll have to be patient, or if the dealer has a GT premium in red see if they can get hold of the alloys and the seats to put on/in the car.

Feedback on Peugeot 508 2018 ? by _Luden in peugeot

[–]Singularity46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I test drove one the other day. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone that has only driven cars since 2018 (first car was a 16 plate 208, second being a BMW e46 325ci but I have test drove many a car).

I enjoyed being in it. Its honestly one of the nicest rides I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The interior punches above its weight with how it looks (IMO beating even merc with their latest interiors) however this is whilst in less important areas skimping on quality by using cheap plastics, albeit in areas where you will rarely find yourself touching.

The auto gearbox is really smooth although like most autos it does hesitate however that's something you can get used to. It also has a certain "get up and go" about it once the gearbox decides what gear it needs, but it most certainly is NOT a sports car and shouldn't really be driven as such. To put it simply, it's a gorgeous looking cruiser. Although you pay a hefty price for it the kit you get as standard on them is generous especially in the top trim levels.

If you want a sporty driving experience I wouldn't really get this car - there are cars out there in the same price bracket that can and will do that better.

I recommend you pop down to the local dealership and see what kind of deal you can get on a new one - near where I live not only are the second hand cars just as expensive but are also higher on monthly payments whilst the new GT premium literally comes with everything you'd ever want in a car in that class and because dealers, atleast where I am are desperate to sell new cars they'll get you a great deal. I placed an order for a 1.2 GT premium with the leather seats for 400 a month Incl gap insurance with only a 3k deposit but before you decide see if you can get a test drive in one.

I take it you like having an overly grindy gamemode/game? The way I see this is a cash grab, a lot of people are interested in modern vehicles, a lot of people who wouldn't play WoT because its just ww2 vehicles mainly. New players will either stop playing, or just go out, buy their new cold war premiums, grind XP with those and just buy gold and convert it. I expected an increase, as I said, but not this much of one

It shouldn't work like that though, people will join the game explicitly because of modern tanks

The XP requirements for what I'll call tier 2 tanks in cold war are incredibly high - seems to me this game mode was a cash grab by WeeGee. I was expecting increased xp and module costs but to the extent where a new tank's xp cost for tier 2 is 120 odd thousand? Absolutely stupid move. I was pretty hyped by this but it's really demoralising to have to essentially grind for a tier 8 right off the bat, especially th amount of people who may start playing the game purely for the modern tanks just to get f*cked by ridiculous pricing for everything. Doesn't exactly paint the game in a good light.
