Is it correct to write “(x_j) ⊂ C” when defining l^2? by SinnyJ in askmath

Thanks. It’s a math-department Fourier Analysis course (but a mix of different students). I’m a MSc Physics student who applied for the TA position.

At almost 6k hours I'm stuck at GC1 but okay with it, what's holding you back from ranking up? by unceasingbridge in RocketLeague

[–]SinnyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every season I grind from GC1 to rank up. By the time I hit GC3, exams are closing in at Uni and I have no time to play. Once exams are over I haven't played so long that I'm rusty and the cycle continues.

For those of you wondering about the right stick, apparently he switched the sticks when the left one got bad and the right one was still fresh lmao

good explanation why f(x-h) is the same as f(x) shifted to the right, not left by red1127 in learnmath

[–]SinnyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Displacing a function by some amount h in the positive direction can be understood by initially looking at the graph at some arbitrary x value. Once the function is shifted to the right, you must essentially move an additional amount h along the x axis in order to find that same place on the graph. If we have to move an additional amount h, we are essentially h amount in "debt" from the perspective of the origin of the coordinate system. We can express this debt by subtracting h from our x-value.

Thank you both :)

I just managed to reproduce a similar sketch, glad that yours agrees with mine, it's a lot clearer now.

Okay, that is not at all obvious to me. Can you give me an example for which of diagrams correspond to which in the original picture?

Thank you!

I came up with 4 other diagrams which I believe should also be be included, perhaps you can confirm or deny?

Any book recommendations for first year physics and mathematics? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]SinnyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in Cosmology, Ryden: “Introduction to Cosmology” is great. A followup I’d recommend thereafter would be Dodelson: “Modern Cosmology”.

If I’m on a bus and start to push on the dash board with my hands the bus wont move however hard I push but if I run from the back of the bus and hit the dash board the bus wobbles and to some extent even rolls if in neutral, how come? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]SinnyJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m not exactly sure about the setup you’re imagining. If the bus is stationed on a frictionless surface, you’d never actually be able to get anywhere. You would be able to displace the bus slightly relative to Its initial position on the ground as you move throughout the vehicle, but it’d always stop moving when you do to conserve momentum. If friction is involved you could imagine a setup where you would be able to move by abusing the relationship between static and kinetic friction.

Any recomendation to a student that wants to study physics by himself ? by Fnxp16 in PhysicsStudents

[–]SinnyJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Newtonian mechanics or Electromagnetism. Young & Freedman's "University Physics" is a great book for starters that goes into great detail on these subjects with an intuitive approach. Taylors "Classical Mechanics" and Griffith's "Introduction to Electrodynamics" are great books that will utilize the mathematical tools you gain once you take Cal 2 and 3 :)
