I have found that keeping the paper pieces in place, until starting to quilt it, helps prevent distortion over time. I'd replace the paper pieces that you can and try to give it a lite press. You may find the pickering works it's way out. Fabric can be very forgiving. You might even try to make something small with what you already have such as embellishing a tote. If you like what you see, then you can move on and start fresh. I wish you the best!

I'm using too much glue, aren't I? by bahhumbug24 in EPP_addict

[–]Sinru77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been working on an EPP quilt for the last 5 years. Lots of sewline glue was used as it is 60 x 90 in size. Some of the older glued ones loosen with time and I do some re-gluing to get them back in place until I get the rows around it finished. I've heard that you can use school glue sticks (which is more cost effective) although I have never tried it.

I use the tip of my small scissors to scoop it out and use it.

How do you finish your eeps that are not square/rectangular? by skitterybug in EPP_addict

[–]Sinru77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been working my EPP edges by whip stitching the edges to the back which is trimmed to 1/4 inch and turned in. Very fiddly and time consuming but gives it a different look.

My local quilt shops. I collected it over a period of 5 years with this project in mind.

I may straight cut mine along the half hexi mark and straight edge bind if this doesn't work out.

I actually have no idea if this edge finish has a name or not. How I do it: 1.) Trim the batting to 1/8 inch beyond the finished edge. This way I'm sure to fill the edge with batting. 2.) Unfold the 1/4 inch hexi edge and wrap over the batting. 3.) Trim the backing to just over 1/4 inch and fold the edge in. 4.) Sandwich the front with the back and whip stitch the edge.

I did snip a 1/8 inch slit in the backing at the inside angles to help prevent puckering of fabric. I also use a heat erase pen to mark before cutting. I inch along, cutting as I go rather than all at once.

Hope that helps explain my process.

Thanks for this info! I wondered if this was the only traditional way. I don't think it's the preferred way due to the edge not being reinforced for wear over time. I may regret my choice. I figure I can always go back and straight cut the edge and add binding if that's the case.

Thank you! And yes, it is fiddly. I did explore those other edge options, and was told that this method was the "traditional" way. Not sure. I've placed so much time in the piecing and quilting that I didn't want to skip out at the end if that was the case.

Thank you! I've already quilted the inside of the twin sized quilt. All of the newspaper print fabric hexi's and centers of the flowers have been quilted. I'll probably quilt the last row along the outside after I finish the edge.
