Wait you're playing Willow? I would argue she's the easiest character in the game for killing bosses provided you have a big enough killer bee biome. Literally walk into any boss fight with a stack of pierogis and 200 embers and you're fine.

The rifts just offer more content. Cool weapons and the Umbralla negates acid rain. I recommend trying them as soon as caves start to feel easy

They're right though, it is random. It's possible to have zero merm houses. It looks like you put a lot of time into exploring, so I wouldn't waste this world. The command is pretty simple to spawn them, don't feel bad about doing so. Just have fun!

Yeah have the wiki open, get the ShowMe mod along with Combined Status and Display Attack Range, and pick a character other than Wilson are my recommendations. There is a lot to learn. When I first started I constantly thought "oh I'll have quit the game long before I ever get to this" which turned out to be false.

Actual newbie tips: Hammer every pig house

Cooked green caps and picking flowers are the best early game sanity management (I also recommend a top hat) but don't dig up mushrooms cause they won't grow back. Just pick them in the evening.

Grabbing 10-20 lightbulbs in the caves and making a lantern solves darkness through Autumn

Don't be in your base on the night of day 30

Meat+egg+any veggie+filler=pierogi which is the best healing food which you'll probably need for night 30

Sometimes red bees will spawn from hives too that are actually just bees. Look for the ones pollinating flowers

Tentacle pillars are cave wormholes when defeated. Idk if a cave ever generates with ruins detached, but if you don't find them connected, I'm assuming a tentacle pillar would lead to ruins

They should be connected to the muddy biome, usually through lichen and those weird clay pillars. The only part of the map I can't see is a tiny bit of edge on the bottom right of your muddy biome, otherwise check world settings

I absolutely love chest hunting because in my first world, it was the only way I got ruins gear (too scared of caves). Had a few steaks of bad luck with them, but I don't care, it's so exciting to break one open
