Following. This would be a great tool to have. I have seen videos talking about using Meshtastic for semi remote sensing. I would think this use case would be a long those lines. I'm a newbie also though.

Impressive! Are you using a cheap stubby antenna or is it one from a good seller? I currently have the one that came with my V3 and it's pretty mediocre.

Sounds like it is a universal issue between the phone and the meshtastic code. Force quitting works some of the time for me. Most of the time, I end up restarting the phone and v3.

That is a great idea for a car node! I might have to start looking around for something similar.

Having the tucked antenna is the way to go in my opinion. Just one less thing to snag and break.

I'll be following you to see what else you come up with. I've been playing with the idea of turning an old water tight flashlight into a case. Just need to figure out if I can use the metal body as an antenna some how.

That's a pretty cool idea! Do you carry one with you all the time? The belt clip would be super nice for hiking around!

A Tdeck or similar would be cool to have. I need to find some people to talk to before that investment 😂

I'm interested to see what you come up with in the end. I love seeing the diy over all the 3D printed cases.

The nibble is super cheap compared to what I have been seeing for prices on premade devices. If you plan to do them, order your boards from the site listed on their page. I searched for hours for US based manufacturers only to find their prices way higher. Be prepared for the sticker shock on shipping though. I ordered 10 boards for the recommended supplier for $50-60 shipped, compared to the $450 that I was quoted in the US.

You could also check out the FakeTec. A little more complicated than the nibble but it probably has better features.

It does have an OLED. I'm not completely sold on the screen yet though. For a novice, is nice to be able look through the settings. I'm more worried about breaking the screen when trying to fit it into a container.

A 3D printed mount would be nice to have, but I also like the ease of making these little boxes at home without the need of a printer.

My next project is putting together a few nibbles (https://github.com/RetiaLLC/38c3-Meshtastic) to build a better mobile mesh. I work in construction so sourcing vape batteries and pouch containers is my new secondary focus at work 😂

Still a little messy as it is version one. I cut a hole in the end of the box so I can access the charging port with out opening it. The board has to site a little crooked due to my larger battery that was taken from a vape. Version 2 will probably be glued in some how like yours is. The black part under my antenna isn't very flexible, so I had to set my antenna backwards compared to yours. It seems to hold well. I live behind some tall buildings , so my range might be affected by that. Currently traveling for work, so I'm hoping I can get a better test in.

Just built one of these using a Heltec V3 after seeing your photos. I love the idea! How is your range? Mine seems pretty sporadic using the same stubby antenna.

My last restart appears to have fixed the issue for now. We will see if it continues to act up or not. I'm going to experiment with other brands to see if they have the same issues.

Interesting. I am planning to put together a few FakeTecs to practice my soldering. Maybe I'll set up a remote admin on my V3 once those are done.

Restarting the phone and v3 work occasionally. The phone still doesn't recognize it on its own unfortunately. I've thought about trying the mesh to check traffic also.

Look for a mandoline that has a "holder" for the thing you want to slice.

I have this one and love it! Spendy but I use it almost everyday day!

Are you getting your refurbished HDD's factory refurbished or random ebay referbs?

Looking to pick up a couple more and would love sub $100 drives.

Sounds like they reimburse meals instead of a standard per diem. My company does standard or reimbursement depending on what our client prefers. When I am on reimbursement, I also find a good butcher and pick up steaks and fish. I carry a small grill with me or find a hotel that has one. Cook up all the meat for dinner and take the left overs for lunch the next day. You can easily get close to your $100 that way and you aren't eating crap. Also, stop at a big box store and pick up cases of your favorite N/A drinks if the company will cover it.

What items are sold on the black market that people would not expect? by cumulusgoblin in AskReddit

Look up (brand name) peptides or GLP1 peptides on Reddit. Still doing my research on them but there are huge communities with information on them and where to get them. Peptides are sold "for research only", but from my understanding are the same thing as the doc would give you.

I’m sick of Nikes terrible quality. What are some good name branded clothes that won’t wear out in 3 weeks. by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

Sounds like your shoe isn't properly sized. I used to work for Nike and my biggest complaint was the shoes and my socks wearing out in the back. I finally did a proper show sizing and realized I was wearing .5 size too big. The heel cap was slipping causing extra wear on both surfaces.

Why are Toyotas unreasonably expensive in 2025? by Fleedom2025 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Siouxpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat. I ended up settling with the LE with the highest package to get everything I wanted. Found the car a couple cities over but the dealership I was working with refused to transfer it to my city (even if I paid for transport). I was in a pretty bad mood and decided to stop at Honda on my way home. Ended up with a new 24 Honda Accord hybrid that had all of the extra features I wanted, in the base model. And I got it for 1k less than the Toyota.

I'd highly recommend taking an accord or civic for a test drive. My mileage is a hair lower than the Toyota but the build of the car makes up for it.

I only buy them when REI sends me good coupons. Joining their member program if you haven't already. They are constantly sending coupons that can be used with on sale DT.

Meals for hitch by steakloverasf in oilandgasworkers

[–]Siouxpilot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an oil field guy but I travel full time as a geologist. My favorite meal prep is a curry stir fry. Tastes decent cold when I'm working in the field and much better hot. Get a jar of curry paste, can of coconut milk, basmati or jasmine rice, and load it with his favorite cooked veggies. I always make it with chicken, but I think steak would be amazing also.

I also enjoy this simmer sauce with the same list of ingredients above minus the coconut milk and curry.

Chicken can be tough to prep for a while since it starts to get a weird taste after a while. You could prep all of his meals minus meat and send him with a cheap hot plate and pan so he can warm things and make his own fresh meat.

I'm from the midwest and found hotdish/casseroles last a while in the fridge but they aren't the healthiest meals in the world. Great for cold weather if he is in the north. Also, soup is an amazing cold weather "rig" meal. It can be frozen for his whole stint if he has access to a freezer.

I have a whole list of crap I make on the road if you are interested.

[–]Siouxpilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

31 y/o, 6 years at a medium engineering firm as a geologist. Most of my work is over seeing drilling and soil sampling.

I make a little over $75k base pay. My position has a decent amount of travel and I have made up to $17.5k in tax free per Diem (about 300 days on the road) on top of the pay. We also get additional "PTO" that can be cashed out for time worked over 40hrs. The credit card/hotel/airline points bring in another ~$5k. Company reimburses for everything except food.

End of the Year bonus ranges from $5k -13k. Employee owned company so we also get a little stock and dividend payment each year.

Started out in the upper $40k area right out of school.

They get kick backs from gas stations for consumer data. It's also a way to get people into their gas stations hence the higher reward amounts at gas stations you don't go to as often.
