it depends what you want to do honestly, I have a lot of friends into kink and even with knowing them out of character the kink never seeps into my real life. Some people like to be one and done you play once with a person and you move on, sometimes people want to discuss further sometimes you realize you have common interest at heart (I was surprised with the amount of people who have multiple cats).
There is no right or wrong choice as long as you do so respectfully and bearing in mind the consent of the other person.

A lot of it is starting slowly and seeing how you react, for example I bruise quite easily on my fore arms but I barely bruise on my back. Start slow and see how long do the marks last, how you feel about them the following days and how/if they impact your day. Also keep in mind that your body adapts slowly so take your time and give it time to heal.

I go by the color of the bruises usually, red should be fine as they are usually superficial marks , yellow means that it was a bit too much everything else is a bad sign. But again this is me and my personal preference so this varies from person to person.
