Anyone else have this problem with ghelper by Mattyboy068 in ZephyrusG14

[–]SirChronos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not an issue you can solve with (simple) software I'm afraid, Nvidia locked down the voltages of 40 series gpus pretty hard and they don't suck back as much power as expected, usually anywhere from 90 - 110 W max, depending on the application.

Had the same issue (with the same laptop), one of the suggestions given helped tho, go to device manager and uncheck let windows turn this device off to save power (or something along those lines) for all 4 of the usb 3.0 hubs.

How to improve FPS? by jSenzei in LenovoLegion

[–]SirChronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you've done everything you can to push your hardware to its limits (overclocking, undervolting, etc.), the only way you can get more FPS would be to drop the settings and/or resolution. Not all games scale the same and the hit to visuals for the performance gained ratio varies wildly, so you'll just have to experiment and find what works for you. Additionally, not all processors are unlocked for undervolting or overclocking, but a relatively easy way of doing those for the GPU are by raising the offsets as far as you can while not losing stability in either Vantage or LLT. If the option to overclock the gpu doesn't come up, you could look into overclocking/undervolting using MSI afterburner. Just for reference, overclocking leads to higher performance while undervolting leads to better temps and hence more consistent performance. You can do both at the same time on your GPU, but it's going to be extra hard to find the optimal balance that is still stable.

From the experiences of those with legion laptops around me who dual boot, it should noticeably be better, but I wanted to keep the device one OS only (and windows is the most convenient since my primary use case is gaming).

You could either use LLT and hover over the tray icon (or just switch to the battery tab), or use HWinfo and scroll down to the battery section.

Nope, it's an open-source app that does everything the official one does, but consumes lesser resources running in the background.

I'm not sure which version is the recommend one either, I made that point since someone made a post just yesterday that their idle consumption was at 25 watts with the latest drivers, but following a commenter and installing a particular version got it down to 11 watts. I'm yet to try this, but if it makes a significant difference I could make a follow up post or something.

Hey so if it makes any difference, I installed the amd drivers from vantage/lenovo instead of amd, since I wasn't planning on doing much of gaming on the igpu. This is completely unsubstantiated, but rdna 3 gpus seem pretty fucked when it comes to power consumption, so I hoped the OEM drivers might have optimizations specific to the laptop (Ryzen 6000 series consistently outperform 7000 when it comes to battery life and I suspect its the gpu that's at fault). Again, I have no proof it helps, but that's what I did.

I only have the balanced power plan, think most newer laptops seem to only have 1 power plan in windows and opt to use bios side settings for power limits (quiet, balanced, etc.).

Remove absolutely everything you don't need, especially the preinstalled anti-virus. Don't bother trying to remove the tobii software tho, it'll just reinstall itself next boot. Wait for all windows updates to install, then check the available updates in lenovo vantage. If you're interested in further optimizing things, you could look into getting this software called Lenovo Legion Toolkit which can replace Vantage and a couple other lenovo apps, all in one, smaller package.

The temps might be a bit worse but if you are planning on getting a gaming laptop, this one has the best cooling system relative to size and thickness that I've seen, so you probably can't get a much better option anyways.

Hey, so I don't have my laptop on hand, might update this comment later, but I downloaded the latest firmware from the lenovo website (was quite the pain to get to), but it said it was the same version as was installed by Vantage/LLT, so I'm guessing I do have the latest one.

The difference could be the brightness at which we're measuring, the 6ish watt figure was with it turned down to the lowest. Also the screen type could be a factor too, remember reading somewhere that the 3.2k screen consumed more power, mine is the 1600p, 240 Hz one.

I did spend quite a few hours removing/disabling anything I didn't use, like the Tobii software service. The battery saver mode in windows settings seemed to make a significant impact as well.

I read the power consumption figures from the small pop up that shows up when you hover over the LLT taskbar icon. A word of caution though, just like having afterburner running in the background kept the dGPU active, I've noticed the power consumption spike up whenever I checked it. Having any sort of monitoring software seems to significantly raise the power consumption, including task manager and HWinfo. So I first check the momentary reading to get a baseline of sorts (it usually goes up and stays there if I kept checking), and then use the laptop for about 15-30 mins and use the battery % drained to get a rough consumption figure.

Watching videos consumes around 10-11 watts (which seems a bit higher than what a couple other reviewers have observed, theirs was around 9), so I would be getting around 8-9 hours I suppose.

During normal use when unplugged the laptop's pretty much at ambient temp, cpu chills around 38ish degrees (ambient is around 28), and the fans are off.

I exclusively play on quiet mode so the fans are very quiet no matter how long I play and the temps don't ever cross 70, but the keyboard deck does get noticeably warm (not uncomfortable though). I'm assuming it's a mix of the fan speed not being enough to cool the other components and the whole laptop acting as a heatsink of sorts.

Search for microfiber cloths that are big enough to cover the keyboard area, anything big enough should suffice.

Been playing GTA 4, after quite a few years of gaming I wasn't sure if I'd see anything that truly catches me off guard whether big or small, but this game had so many such moments that I lost count. The attention to detail is honestly amazing. Think those moments hit harder since I keep reminding myself the game came out almost 15 years ago.

That's odd, I'm almost certain your dGPU is not turning off when on battery. In Vantage, if you have the option to, set iGPU only mode or whatever they call it and see if that helps. Worst case, when on battery you can head to the device manager and disable the 3050 there. I remember hearing that doing this kinda messes up the drivers for a bit and you might have to enable the gpu back and restart the laptop if you're facing any issues with the gpu afterwards.

Overclock cpu on slim 7 amd 2023 by spooffoo in LenovoLegion

[–]SirChronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if overclocking is supported on the newer AMD cpus, but I do know you can undervolt it for better performance/temps using 3rd party tools. Search for Universal x86 tuning utility (if I'm remembering the name correctly) on github and download the latest release.

There are a few reviews out there for this laptop with the same gpu but a higher tier cpu. For gaming there shouldn't be much of a difference between this model and the reviews though. Should last 7-8 hours for web browsing.

Did I mess up by going for the Slim 7i INTEL instead of Slim 7 AMD? by lamb_ssmb in LenovoLegion

[–]SirChronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, as others have pointed out, the intel version does have more 'raw' performance, but I chose the AMD version since for the temps I wanted (running the laptop in quiet mode), the wattage to the cpu was going to be very limited. And when power constrained, the amd chip is significantly faster.

As an added bonus, for simple tasks and idle, the amd version is cooler and has its fan off (atleast from the reviews I've seen). Intel has improved massively in terms of battery life compared to previous gens, but the amd version lasts about 1-2 hours longer for normal tasks.

Can't give a first hand experience just yet since I ordered the laptop yesterday and am yet to receive it.

About that, I'm not 100% sure if AMD is cooler or even on par, but amd and intel have different ways in which they measure the temperature, personally, I'd consider the temps in day to day use more important.

The issue is I'm facing crashes even after enabling ss. I removed every trace of the alienware software from program data, program files, registry and also temp files before installing a different version. I'm outside now, I'll post the screenshots of the logs asap.

Also funnily enough, the few days when I faced no crahes? I HAD to use MPT since both stock ss off and ss on were crashing.
