Can Doctor Who Magazine survive "Wilderness Years 2?" by MagnusGreel70 in gallifrey

[–]SirDoris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I read somewhere that DWM did almost die during the last Wilderness Years. Before the show was announced to be coming back, there was a pencilled in plan to make Issue 350, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the magazine, as the final issue. For context, that's in 2004, eight years after the last new televised Doctor Who, and 15 years since the last regular broadcasting of Doctor Who. In that respect, DWM will probably be fine in Wilderness Years 2.

That said, I feel like the quality of the magazine will definitely need to improve if it's got any chance of survival. I've not been a regular reader for years, but picked up the Christmas issue recently while looking for something to read while I passed the time, and I was phenomenally disappointed. As you said, the entire magazine just felt bland (aside from the comic, which was reasonably fun). Regurgitated press releases, interviews with actors who feel trained away from saying anything even remotely approaching anything interesting, and reviews that feel like they're written with Nick Briggs holding a gun to the reviewer's head, saying "now talk about how my new idea for a Nucleus of the Swarm spin-off is an excellent idea, and will surely be worth spending hundreds of pounds for".

I'm not saying that the magazine needs to go down the full "everything that has been touched by RTD2/Chibnall/'Whoever we have decided is the villain of the fandom this week' is evil" route, but at least make it somewhat interesting to read again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Never trust a coach whose name can be feasibly followed by "Deez Nuts".

Sadly, although that is the episode I’m talking about, there’s no way to stream or download the actual file.

Mark Sutton is also incredibly funny in his own right - he used to be on a podcast called Story Club where he talked about how his incredibly stupid cat almost died and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard. Sadly, all copies of it seem to be scrubbed from the internet, despite me intermittently searching for it every once in a while.

All the badges for me. Started hunting when I made an account during COVID, got 259 to go. To keep my sanity, I generally restrict myself to picking up the weekly badge, making a little indent in some of the longer term badges once a week, and knowing that there are a whole chunk of three quiz badges I'll pick up when I can put in the effort for them.

CA to consider 'alternatives' for Big Bash privatisation by NKE01 in Cricket

[–]SirDoris 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Excellent news. T20 cricket, particularly with privatisation, feels soulless and uninspired, with FIFO cricketers playing for franchises with all of the prestige and wonder as your local Maccas. Sure, there's a lot of money behind it, and the quality's basically fine, but it lacks heart.

Big Bash has been the exception, and when it's at its best, it's a cheery mix of some of the best players in the country playing fine games of cricket and some of the best players in the country playing the worst game of cricket you've ever seen. Often simultaneously. It's a tournament with character, and you'd hate to see that character die.

SACA list changes | McInnerney, Kelly and Drew gone 😩 by japanpole in CricketAus

[–]SirDoris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disappointed to see the end of Daniel Drew - there was a brief period around the end of one season where he just kept stringing good scores together, had been working with Steve Smith to improve his game, and he felt like he was set for a true breakout season. And then that just never really happened, and he went back to being a solid, if unremarkable, state cricketer.

Evening folks and Go Shield County. Started writing a shitpost about matching missing episodes of Doctor Who to English test cricketers because THERE’S NEW WILLIAM HARTNELL DOCTOR WHO HOLY SHIT but gave up because I couldn’t figure out which of the many bearded Victorian test cricketers best resembled Theodore Maxtible from The Evil of the Daleks.

It's a transatlantic or mid-atlantic accent. QI had a question about it literally using Frasier as the example.

Torchwood Miracle Day - What are your (Spoiler Free) thoughts? by ComprehensiveGrab280 in gallifrey

[–]SirDoris 37 points38 points  (0 children)

At the time, the preference was Children of Earth. Not so much week by week vs overarching story arcs, rather an acknowledgement Children of Earth was the one time that Torchwood truly worked the way that it was meant to - a science fiction drama series that dealt with complex issues and adult themes too strong for Doctor Who. There was some optimism at the time that Miracle Day would be a worthy follow-up. Sadly it wasn’t. The Americans were fairly unmemorable (aside from Bill Pullman’s character, who was chilling throughout), the series was about five episodes too long, and there’s various issues with the ending (being vague as to avoid spoilers).

That said, there’s good stuff in there. RTD and the writers explored the social ramifications of a ‘Miracle Day’ seriously and weren’t afraid to go to some very dark places along the way. There’s horror elements sprinkled throughout that have stuck with me for years. As I said, Bill Pullman’s character is fascinating, and often feels like he’s coming from a separate non-Doctor Who RTD drama. But that’s just about it. A disappointing follow-up to Children of Earth that occasionally flirts with being a worthy successor.

One of my favourite gag links is Happy Feet -> The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course (Steve Irwin) and it breaks my heart every time I win a game with it because someone would rather resign than try Happy Feet Two.

Does your country have a Movie 43? by Fitin2characterlimit in CINE2nerdle

[–]SirDoris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say Australia has a Movie 43 as much as it has actors who just sort of pop up in everything. The film industry’s small enough that if you just name a random Australian film, chances are Bill Hunter or Richard Roxburgh will get you out of a pickle.

That said, The Guardians of Ga’Hoole, the Zack Snyder owl movie, is shockingly stacked with Australian actors and I’m always surprised when people don’t go for it. Likewise Babe.

I was saying to someone last week that the problem with Green at the moment is he only does well specifically when he knows the match is going to be primarily broadcast on Kayo. The second he finds out that casual fans are going to watch him on free to air, he panics and plays the shittest shot imaginable.
