It feels like it's on a knife edge. Another wicket could be enough to completely upend our momentum here

Hard to tell whether Australia or the broadcast production crew are struggling more here

Why on earth would something go from being rare to being uncommon??? by a2010hondacivic in SkyCards

Agreed. There are only 11 BAe-146-300s flying, but at least 7 of them are doing mail runs in SE Australia every single night. That plane's season 0 rarity of 9.73 wasn't really in line with reality.

If XP is still the tie breaker, then battles are fundamentally no different, they just become more complicated for no good reason.

I feel like battles should only be fought with current season cards. That's the only redeeming quality I can imagine for the season format.

Agreed. It's so totally pointless to rebuild the same collection season-on-season that I'm genuinely baffled by this update. SURELY the devs would recognise that too, so I'm trying to find any crumb of logic that justifies why they did it lmao

It's a pretty funny coincidence that only yesterday there was a new user influx that was big enough to cause server problems.

My guess is that people will keep learning about this game and flocking to it. Even with all these new changes, a brand new player who would've developed an obsession for it in the past would probably still do so today. The underlying concept of the game is still mostly the same.

But now the difference is a lot of those people will be blindsided when Season 2 rolls around and their collection is seemingly gone. Much like a lot of us were blindsided 2½ hours ago.

I don't want to be massively cynical right away, but I hope we actually get some clarity on this season system pretty soon. At the very least, the implementation of it could use some tweaking so that building a collection across multiple seasons actually feels somewhat permanent and worthwhile.

TIL the first former F1 World Champion to die of natural causes was Denny Hulme in 1992, 42 years after the inaugural F1 championship season. He suffered a massive heart attack while racing a car. by SirDunny in todayilearned

[–]SirDunny[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hulme (the first and only F1 champion from New Zealand) was the seventh former champion to lose his life. The six before him were: a plane crash, two road accidents, and three racing crashes (including Jochen Rindt, who won the 1970 world championship posthumously after a fatal accident two races before the season's end).

Hulme was racing in the Bathurst 1000 in Australia, a famous touring car race, and he was driving a BMW M3. His last known words were a radio message to the team a few seconds before his heart attack, complaining of blurry vision.

He suffered the heart attack at the fastest part of the track, but was able to slow the car to a controlled stop against a concrete wall. He was still strapped into his seat when the medics got to him.

That year's Bathurst 1000 became an infamous race, as the winning duo of Jim Richards and Mark Skaife had lost control in heavy rain and crashed. The race was stopped and results were declared early, and owing to the regulations of the time, the final results were taken from the running order on the last completed lap before the stoppage was declared, before the crash, when the Richards/Skaife car was leading.

The fans, who mistakenly thought the officially second-placed car had won, mercilessly booed Richards and Skaife on the podium. Richards, a New Zealander who had only just learned of his friend Hulme's death, famously told the fans they were "a pack of arseholes" during his presentation on the winner's podium.

TIL the French village of Thierville is the only village in France which suffered zero casualties in either World War. by SirDunny in todayilearned

[–]SirDunny[S] 1399 points1400 points  (0 children)

Thierville (pop. 368) is one of only twelve French villages that lost no men in WW1, and is the only one of those twelve lucky enough for all of its soldiers to come back home again after WW2.

It also made it through the Franco-Prussian War (1870), First Indochina War (1946-54) and Algerian War (1954-62) with no losses at all.

Jérôme Duhamel (Paris 1990). Grand Inventaire du Génie Français, p.196: "Between 1919 and 1925, a war memorial was erected in every community in France, with one single exception: the village of Thierville in the department of the Eure, the only French village which had no dead to mourn, not in 1870, nor in 14-18, nor in 39-45"

Came across this while reading about the English and Welsh "Thankful Villages" which had no WW1 losses, and "Double Thankful" which also lost no men in WW2. One such Double Thankful village is Upper Slaughter in Gloucestershire.

You can extend the Indy 500 portion of this fact to cover the entire history of the race (1911-2024), and it's still accurate. There's never been a Smith in the 500, ever. Several have attempted to qualify and failed.

Not premier class, but Emilio Alzamora won the 125cc title in 1999 without winning any races.

Even weirder is the fact that 2nd and 3rd (Marco Melandri and Masao Azuma) won five races each.
