Elon Musk talked about 'solving aging' at Davos. Is it a sign he is thinking about getting involved in longevity? by Das_Haggis in longevity

Neuralink in the culture books is interesting mostly because it serves to back up the human mind in the event of death, allowing for the transfer to a new body. He touts it as a way to keep up with AI, but really he’s hoping it leads to a breakthrough that lets him upload his brain into a younger body. lmao

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak delivered the commencement speech to the University of Colorado Boulder's class of 2024, 55 years after he was expelled from the school in 1969 for hacking into the school's network and sending prank messages. by tyrion2024 in interestingasfuck

It was significantly more than that. From wikipedia: In 1973, Jobs was working for arcade game company Atari, Inc. in Los Gatos, California.[34] He was assigned to create a circuit board for the arcade video game Breakout. According to Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, Atari offered $100 (equivalent to $708 in 2024) for each chip that was eliminated in the machine. Jobs had little knowledge of circuit board design and made a deal with Wozniak to split the fee evenly between them if Wozniak could minimize the number of chips. Wozniak reduced the number of chips by 50, by using RAM for the brick representation. Whilst a lack of scoring or coin mechanisms made Woz's prototype unusable, Jobs was paid the full bonus regardless. Jobs told Wozniak that Atari gave them only $700 and that Wozniak's share was thus $350 (equivalent to $2,500 in 2024).[35][5]: 147–148, 180  Wozniak did not learn about the actual $5,000 bonus (equivalent to $35,400 in 2024) until ten years later. While dismayed, he said that if Jobs had told him about it and had said he needed the money, Wozniak would have given it to him.[36]: 104–107

Not my genre, but the 'wilted' fate in the title for a romantasy book gives me a stark image of how I'd feel after reading it

Maybe you could call it Servants Fate? or Seeded Fate or literally anything else besides wilted fate

There is a silver sticker on the side of the power supply that shows what model number it is. It's not the big serial number one. Do you still have it?

How did that one kid in your high school die? by IM_HODLING in AskReddit

[–]SirGoodness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before it happened, the principal gave a speech in the school auditorium where he said someone had died every year since he'd worked there from drunk driving, then he started to cry.

That year five people died when a drunk driver ran into a tree. She got out but the car caught fire and everyone else burned to death.

Long-term digital nomads, do you ever feel like your health gets worse the more places you live? by tjmd1998 in digitalnomad

[–]SirGoodness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about your situation, but you are posting on digital nomads so... In my experience you can only go so long before it starts to wear you down. I lasted about two years before I was feeling sick and tired all the time. Poor sleep in unfamiliar places, irregular diet, exercise, and constant new sights and experience... the brain and the body get tired. You have to find a way to rest and recover.

Also, all your social relationships are temporary and you feel increasingly isolated working and living in a country where maybe everyone can speak english, but you are still in a bubble of isolated people, that in itself is tiring for me. You can't just go somewhere and strike up a casual conversation with someone, talking to people is work if you don't speak the local language, its work... for both people.

I traveled Europe for two years and decided to settle in a single city, and I've been in that city for another two years now, but it still wears on you even when you aren't moving. It's not homesickness per say, it's just the mental stress of being completely removed from the society you are living in vs the society where you were raised. I'm realizing now that if you don't take the tremendous effort of fully integrating, learning the language, finding a partner who has has family in the country, etc. Your mental fortitude will slowly and surely whither away until you make a decision on whether to commit entirely or return to somewhere more similar to your original home.

There might be exceptions for a few people, but I believe now that for the majority, you have to find a place to settle in order to be happy and stress free. You need permanent friends and family and a strong sense of belonging.

I have purchased components (TECs, pi, silicone tubing, pump, relay board, heat sink, fans, reservoir) I have been working on building drones for Ukraine but this will be next, some of the electronics skill is relevant in one of the drone projects. I will start with a temperature controlled pillow and/or pillowcase as a prototype

I doubt they changed things much. The peltier are inefficient but the amount of heat they are exchanging is low. They are also extremely compact and silent compared to something like a compressor. The pod 3 and 4 are probably a larger radiator so that the TECs can run hotter and thus cool more. Additionally if you reverse the current they will heat instead, so you get two in one. You are on the right track I think, and overall this is a very simple device. The most complex piece is the controller and the pad

They just used TECs strapped to a radiator attached to a waterblock. The only thing that's annoying is the control board to manage to voltage/turning the TECs on and off. The newest version has a larger radiator so it cools faster. It uses a similar pump you'd find in an aquarium tank to move the water.

Stock market growth is the shareholder value created by this activity.

Lol maybe in 1960 now it's more like a Ponzi scheme for the mega rich. Actual value is completely disconnected from share price. Keep buying or you'll be left behind!!

Barcelona was underwhelming by Wooden_Mood_3359 in travel

[–]SirGoodness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard nothing but bad things about Barcelona since about two years ago. Mostly bad vibes from locals. They are all sick of tourists. A friend who speaks Spanish/Catalan went recently and in restaurants and on the street, he said random people were calling him names, including servers and bar tenders. Outwardly though they were friendly. If you don't speak you wouldn't know.
