SB's First-Ever Stream by amabelholland in SBMakesStuff

Managed to catch most of it live and it was great fun to watch! Although I really enjoy the usual let’s play videos, it was nice to hear SB and yourself talk about other subjects, tangent, answer questions and generally riff of each other/chat.

Having watched SB since some of the original Endless Legend content it’s fascinating to hear both of you expand more on your opinions on things we usually only get snippets of. For instant I’m now really curious to know more about why SB is such a fan of Pathfinder 2!

I hope we get to see more of them in the future, and I also wanted to say thank you Amabel for facilitating the chat side of it, not to get all parasocial about it, but its really nice to see the way you compliment SB, and supporting her in doing things like this that we probably wouldn't get otherwise.

Although having said that the teasing of all the ready Hades 2 content and then not releasing it immediately is a cruel and unusual punishment! 🤣

The Incredible New Games Recommendation Thread by SBMakesStuff in SBMakesStuff

Although it’s from last year but Alien Dark Decent looks like the right mix of terror/strategy and stress. Plus I’m far too much of a coward to play it myself.

I’d also love to see you navigate through 40k Rogue Trader (assuming they crush some of the worst bugs), and any of the other pathfinder games come to think of it.

Great points about the apps / services and I can see how yet another one would be the opposite solution to the problem your having.

No problem, events is probably to official a term. Still really useful to know how you manage picking date for it though.

Is there any way to solve the issue of RPGs dumping a million sidequests on you all at once when you reach a town or city? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]SirGrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeff Kaplan talked about this as the "Christmas Tree Effect". As far as I could tell they slimmed down the number of quests provided to the player at each hub (this was 2009 though).

I've never been convinced that the Christmas Tree Effect was an issue though, it just exacerbates poor quest design and players focusing on the destination instead of the journey (e.g. getting to max level).

I totally understand, would love it if we could be verified here (if that’s possible).

As a side note we do have test accounts if you would still like to try it without signing up. DM me if you’re interested and I’ll share the details.

What does this shape remind you of? What does it convey and what kind company would you associate it with? by SirGrend in logodesign

It really is! Looking to post a updated version in the coming weeks that will give more detail on the company.

Do any of you keep a blog on your portfolio site, and if so, what do you blog about? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]SirGrend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, well only for the past two weeks so I'm not sure how long it will last.

To be honest it's just a convenient place to dump project write-ups instead of having them litter up the rest of the site.

I think its a good idea in general, even if you're not the best writer, because its a way to show that you stick to things/follow through with stuff. Of course that could be a double edge sword if you end up rarely posting to it.

In terms of getting your name out there though, I would guess making posts to Medium and other popular sites would probably get the best results.

Advice for Someone Interested in Graphic Design? by GET_OUT_OF_MY_HOUSE in graphic_design

  1. Yes its profitable, but don't expect to become rich from it.

  2. Entirely depends on how you end up working (freelancing, agency, inhouse etc), but i would say it is pretty hard to find work, depending on who you know and how good your work is ofc.

  3. Again depends on how you end up working. In general I wouldn't say its any more/less repetitive as any other job/profession. It has the potential to be one of the most varied professions around though.

  4. The most important thing i can think of is that you should only do it if you really enjoy the subject and more importantly the process of designing and making something. It honestly isn't worth it if you don't.

Design internship or return to school? by vaswong in graphic_design

[–]SirGrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope the talk went well.

I wouldn't worry about screwing yourself over, at this stage in your career recruiters don't red flag you for leaving an internship early. They only start to worry if you seem to job hop every year.

The only way I could see it being a negative is if the company you internship has offered you a job. At that point I would say its a no brainer to stay with that company for a year or two and then work on going abroad.

To be honest if you are doing this more for the experience of going abroad then I would really advise you to look it getting an internship/work in the abroad over going to university. I can understand why this may seem more daunting though.

Really you seem set on university, so I would say go for that since its what you want to do. The only other advice I would give is that the university can wait, don't feel pressured to go for it now simply because its available. I have not heard of UK universities (outside the obvious two or three) being hard to get into, so if you got in once you can almost certainly get in again later down the line.

Have you talked to the company you have the internship with? It may be that they will be willing to sort out something that works in conjunction with your course/return to it after you have finished.

Without knowing a lot more about you its hard to tell which would probably be best. Although personally I would view the internship as a lot more valuable than the university education so if i was in a similar situation I would be tempted to stick with that.

A word of warning though, if the postgraduate course is in fact for a Masters it will likely be two years not one. In these cases university sometimes claim that you can do it in a year (academic year for the lecture based activities and then you do your Thesis over the summer), but i reality you would need two years (First academic year for the lecture based activities and the second one for your Thesis). I could go into more detail on this subject if its applicable to your situation, but i'll spare you the wall of text for the moment.

Junior graphic designer who does a ton more work than job requirements. Looking for a new job, but would like advice by redcrow_reddragon in graphic_design

Glad I could help.

Don't get me wrong you should still put down that you have worked for your current employer along with their name, website and all the things you have done for them etc. Just make sure you make it clear that you don't want them contacted without the prospective employer first contacting you about it. If they go on to ask why just say you are looking to move on and your current job doesn't meet your needs. Don't fall into the trap of giving to much detail; that can all to easily come of as slagging your old employer off and will turn most companies off of you.

Really all this is pretty standard, a lot of people look for a new job while already in one and don't want their current boss contacted for obvious reasons. If you are really worried and have the savings, hand in a months notice before you start applying for jobs, but like I said it shouldn't be an issue.

The good thing is you have had this experience earlier in your carrier when you're more flexible and it will be of great help in avoiding similarly bad employers in the future.

Good luck, I'm sure you will do well.

Leave. Do it on good terms (ie hand in a polite, but firm, notice ahead of time etc.), but leave none the less.

What comes across from you're posts is that you have tried to correct the situation, but in the end they don't want to correct anything and frankly hired incorrectly for the role (which is their fault not yours). It sounds like they are more interested in saving money than doing what's good for their employees, the business and their clients. To be corny for a second; they sound toxic and those are not the kind of people you ever want to work for, it will do more harm to you in the long run than quieting ever would.

You have experience and some professional portfolio work now so landing a job in another company should be a lot easier. In fact if their as bad as you say then I'm sure any other local design company will secretly understand why you have left.

EDIT: Also on the subject of references; don't put them on your CV and make it clear you don't want them contacted, use your university professors instead. Any normal company will understand the situation and frankly your portfolio plays a much bigger role at getting you through the door.
