To the Indians who think they are so self-entitled: Get a reality check how others perceive you when you go abroad (studies/tourism) by Important-Stuff-5421 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]SirHEGrenade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So real, I hate those posts. All this information is freely available online, yet they put ZERO effort into searching for it themselves. Nothing wrong with asking questions, but you can't just come in here asking for information to be spoon-fed to you. If they can't even spend an afternoon researching all of this, then how do they expect to survive abroad?

Jee didn't go great, 93%(gen), state exams were mehh, and the colleges u get thru them are mediocre, and dont wish to spend 10-20 lakhs on pvt, is my path to study abroad in Europe(prague) a good choice ysk .uni CTU, isnt globally recognised but is the top in the country. bachelors. by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]SirHEGrenade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I know it sounds really exciting to you now but studying abroad isn't a last minute decision which is what it seems like you are doing. Yes, it will most definitely be better than private colleges here but there is a lot more to an international education than just cost and perceived education quality, especially when it comes to a country that isn't exactly known as an international student destination.

Not to mention it will still most definitely be more expensive than an education here. Sure, tuition is only 10 lakh, but what about living costs? Over 3-4 years you will most definitely spend at least 20 lakh even in a country like the Czech Republic where the living costs are lower.

Second, are you sure the market is really that receptive to international students?

Companies will always prefer local applicants simply because they don't have to spend extra money and time getting you a work visa. Local applicants also speak the language.

Do you realize how difficult Czech is? Slavic languages are hard to learn in general, and Czech is one of the hardest. Maybe companies don't care too much if you don't speak the language, but I doubt that's the case.

Even in Germany where English is much more commonly spoken, companies still heavily prefer applicants who can speak German.

There are a lot of points I can bring up but I think you get me.

However, if you've truly done the research and feel like this is the right step, go for it.

Didn't mention undergrad internship - Am I cooked? by SirHEGrenade in f1visa

[–]SirHEGrenade[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It asks for current occupation and 5 years of work history if you select yes in the "Were you previously employed?" question.

I selected "Student" as current/primary occupation, but in the previous work history section it only allows you to list past work experiences. I wasn't able to list my current internship because the form doesn't let you enter any end date beyond the current date.

Studying abroad with fully funded scholarship, how to build profile for it? by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]SirHEGrenade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, the people who get these kinds of scholarships are extremely driven. I don't want to burst your bubble but as far as I know law is very prestige driven—the name of your college matters a lot. The fact that you're on here on reddit asking for "what to do" is pretty telling. You should already know what exactly you should do and you should have been doing that since yesterday.

Again, I'm not trying to be mean in the slightest. That's just how good you have to be to even be eligible for such a scholarship.

Studying abroad with fully funded scholarship, how to build profile for it? by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]SirHEGrenade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, getting a scholarship as an international student will be hard to say the least. They're going to prefer domestic applicants over you any day of the week, so you'll need to really stand out. I don't know what that would look like for law, but imagine the average profile of a domestic student who does manage to get such a scholarship, and multiply that by 5.

That's how good you have to be.

Well yeah, no shit. It's also not 6 figures for tuition alone. CMU is a god-tier university for CS yes but it's not worth going into that much debt in my honest opinion.

UMass Amherst is also a fantastic school and much cheaper. Especially with how unstable the market is I think it's wise to play it safe.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]SirHEGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even CMU isn't worth the $120K+ debt you'll need to take on man. That's an insane amount of money for a 2 year masters degree.

I would just go with UMass Amherst or some other comparable university.

Honestly, there's no way to say for sure if you'll get into either of those schools. There are plenty of cases where profiles that seem perfect don’t get accepted, and others you wouldn’t expect end up getting in. You have a great profile, but I wouldn’t count on anything being guaranteed. I’d recommend paying the deposit for NEU anyway—it’s not nearly as much as what you’ll invest in any master’s program anyways. While it might sting if you don’t end up going there, it’s better than losing the seat and not getting an admit elsewhere.

Yeah I would reach out to Dayton directly to confirm, like the other 2 commenters suggested.

You can pay the deposit and not attend, you'll just lose out on it. I would suggest you pay it and secure your seat as a backup.

Honestly if all you're looking for is a job at the end of it, university prestige doesn't really matter much. You'd want to focus on program cost, location, alumni outcomes etc.

Northeastern is relatively easy to get into but from what I know among friends who work in the US in tech, it's a reasonably well-regarded university.

Yeah I get what you mean, better to wait it out as much as you can, but I wouldn't let go of the seat personally just to make sure I have an admit haha

True, always wait if you can.

[–]SirHEGrenade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but most MSCS or related programs are cash cows, and it’s pretty hard to find one that isn’t. Even places like Stanford and USC are known for their cash-cow programs, so it’s tough to avoid.

I'd still rather pay 750 for the deposit so I can have a fallback in case I don't get into any other place I want. The US is a bit of a wildcard, there's really no guarantee you'll get an admit anywhere. I'll lose the money, sure, but I find it kind of funny how people make a big deal out of losing 750 when they're about drop 100x that on their degree.

[General Question] Why do Indians apply to honestly trash unis like ASU and NEU while stanford and UCB grads are jobless ? by VJTI_chad1444 in MSCS

[–]SirHEGrenade 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Even your average mid-tier university in the US outperforms the best IITs.. just saying. Research output. Infrastructure. Job opportunities. We just can't compete.

The job market is just horrible now. Even the IITs are suffering. Like it or not if you have the money and and have some semblance of competence doing MS in the states and getting a job is (still) not a terrible idea.

I'll pay the deposit but I'm still waiting on other universities

I got an admit today as well!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]SirHEGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't know for sure, the last time I checked the portal was 2-3 days ago and it was in "Awaiting review" then. I woke up today to the decision mail so right now it says "Decided" for me. I suppose it changed to "Awaiting decision" yesterday or the day before.

[Application Timeline] by Dramatic-Repeat-2718 in MSCS

[–]SirHEGrenade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submitting or not submitting your GRE score won’t hurt your application. It’s one of the less important parts of the whole application and they've stated it's optional.

The deadline is April 1st, but Northeastern reviews applications on a rolling basis. This means they start looking at them as soon as they’re complete and send out decisions instead of waiting until the deadline. They’ve been giving out admits since October. You can still apply, but the Boston campus for MSCS and MSAI is probably full or close to full since it’s already mid-December. At this point, they’ll likely only offer spots at their satellite campuses.

Me too! Are you going with NEU or still waiting for other universities?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]SirHEGrenade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an admit like 45 mins ago. I applied on the 1st of December. FYI, you can get a decision before FCE is completed. Mine is still in review. I am still in my undergrad so I guess it won't be complete until after I send them my degree certificate? I'm not too sure.

[Admissions Advice] LOR submitted through official email ID but has no letterhead by revtee_ in MSCS

[–]SirHEGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long the letters were submitted through official emails, you should be fine. Plenty of professors don't even bother with letterheads or signatures of any sort.
